I personally sold all my meat and pelt to the shop and lived off cooked mushroom and berries. There are an incredibly large supply of berries on the summer and autumn map (although the RV parking spot next to the power damn and stone ruins has plenty of berries) there are also some skills that help with amount of time before you need to eat again.
