How to unlock the Elite Submarine achievement in Order of Battle: World War II - Definitive Guide
First you'll need DLC for this, namely the US Pacific DLC, which has a large naval component.
I played on the easiest difficulty but if you played on the one above I think you could get the achievement quicker, the enemy units have more HP so you can inflict more damage before they die.
There is a trick to getting this achievement and the destroyer one, which is also a bit tricky.
As soon as you can get the specialization for newly purchased naval units to start with one star.
Buy a sub only after you get this specialisation. You start off with one-star. Four to go...
Experience stars are gained from inflicting damage. This is very important.
Problem is destroyers and subs do next to no damage when used against naval targets and if you used them solely in this way you'd be lucky to get to 1 - 2 stars over 12 scenarios.
The trick is to use your designated sub / destroyer to attack coastal targets as much as possible. It's much easier for a destroyer as it can bombard targets well inland, subs need juicy anti-air batteries on the coast. Your sub/destroyer is immune from shore retaliation!
US Pacific Guide Scenario XP milking
For your sub, you can maybe get a few shots this way in Coral sea scenario, but until Guadacanal just take any opportunity you can. Supply ships, low health destroyers. It's slim pickings in the early scenarios. Don't worry too much at the slow progress.
The fun starts at Guadacanal, then New Georgia and Okinawa. I basically got 4 stars across these three scenarios alone.
Guadacanal - you start off with a naval allotment so place your sub at the furthest south near the coast. There is a coastal battery at the very furthest Northeast. Camp next to it and shoot it every turn. It regenerates health too. Nice. It's a fifty turn game so you're gonna get around 40-45 damage for your sub.
After the initial fleet engagement, protecting the escaping transports your navy command points is supposed to be zero, but a glitch means you keep your sub or destroyer to hammer the enemy for the rest of the scenario.
New Georgia
Place sub as far west as you can, you want to be making a bee line for an artillery battery on the shore near the island to the west, the southern most port. Once this is gone, don't bother hitting infantry, move you sub up north , and around the main coast stopping off to attack any artillery or AA batteries. Have tactical bombers take out the shore battery guarding the entrance and you'll be pouring it on without taking a single return hit. Milk it until a unit it killed then move onto the next.
After this scenario I was at 4.5 stars! so close. If I'd played on a slighty higher difficulty I'd probably have cracked it but my land battles were a cakewalk.
The Leyte scenario, you can't use subs until the last stage, so it's slim pickings.
Okinawa
Park your sub to the East of the main, island, as close to the eastern shore as possible. There is a series of AA batteries down the coast. Make a bee-line and pour it on till it pops.
Try to uprade your sub at every opportunity. Gato (1941+) -> Balao (1943+) -> Tench (1944+) every little bit helps.
