How is this missable? I started the game for the first time and played the 10-15 minute opening sequence and it popped no problem. Didn't see any opportunity to skip it unless you need to pause the game to get that option?

Yeah you have to pause the game to get the option to skip the prologue.

No idea why I skipped the prologue the first time around, I guess I thought I already knew what was up, having played WotW previously.

I was wrong. Do play the prologue; it provides context and an emotional hook that makes the game meaningful.
