How to unlock the Immortal achievement in Ori and the Will of the Wisps - Definitive Guide

This can be cheesed by using the "backup saves" the game makes for you and on Easy difficuly (confirmed).

There are 10 save slots. Each one will have your "backup saves". At least one of them should have occurred before the death (probably more if you quit as soon as you die). It is confirmed as long as you reload a backup save that shows 0 deaths at the stats guy in town this ach will pop.

I have tested it for you and can confirm that my save on a run at 1h35min has two deaths on the stats at the guy in town, but the one on that same slot at 1h27min in the "backup saves" shows 0 deaths at the stats guy. Two PC players below have confirmed this works. You should only loose a couple minutes of progress since the last time the game made a "backup save".

The only way to see if a death has registered is to talk to the stats guy in the village (above shard vendor).

Here is a legit 0 deaths on Normal run in under 4 hours. Overflow + Catalyst + Lifeforce + tree seed Quest's 25% dmg boost is OP. You could also get the 25% dmg boost from Midnight Burrows light puzzle tree (see my hard mode solution).

The patch to fix achievements has been released.  However, it disables fast travel from the map without purchasing the ability, which *could* impact trying to combine lightless, shardless, and look at the time (speedrun).  However, a TA user already did a 3h 20min run without buying the fast travel upgrade, so it is still entirely possible to do lightless/shardless/immortal/look at the time all in one run on Easy. We have confirmed that all of them WILL unlock on easy as well.

I think deaths in boss battles and escape sequences might not count.
I just died in the temple escape before doing a successful run without reload and afterwards checked with the stats guy and it says 0 deaths.
Haven‘t completed the game yet, so not sure if the achievement will pop and not sure I want to continue on that save file but the stats sure say 0 deaths.

EDIT: continued on this save file and the achievement popped, I even died an additional time against Shriek. Seems as long as the stats guy say 0 deaths you are fine and you can die as often as you want in boss battles and escape sequences without having to load a backup save.

Maybe update the solution that it is probably fine to die in those parts?
Cannot confirm for the other boss battles and escape sequences but at least for the Temple Escape and the Shriek fight you may die.

This is great! And way less complicated than the One Life mode cheese on Ori DE. Thanks man. Can't wait to get started!

is it for win10 or you can back up save on x1?

You can backup save on Xbox One. There are 10 save slots. Just make a copy of your current playthrough on another slot periodically. Don't forget, as an untimely death cost me 30 minutes' progress a couple of times.

So this doesnt involve having to delete cloud saves and all that convoluted mess lol your saying back up save as in just simply saving in multiple in game save states?

I was wondering if you can still have the achievement if you load your game from the Quick Access option in your save file ?

I doubt it as the death saves to the file not checkpoint but will test.

It wont pop right now. None of them for beating the game will currently. You will have to wait on a patch to check it.

I was just about to start this game but is it best to wait for a patch that fixes these achievments that aren't unlocking?

You can start and just get to the final boss then wait for patch to finish it, but the achievement issues *may* be affecting collectibles too. My advice if you start now is to do your lightless shardless (and maybe 0 deaths) run on easy, then start a new game for 100% on Hard once they patch the achievement issues.

I can confirm that using the built in backup saves works fine. Yesterday I did shardless, lightless, immortal and look at the time achievements on a single easy playthrough. If I died, I'd quit to menu and choose one of the earlier backups. If I wasn't 100% sure if that was before a death, I'd teleport to town and check with the stats guy. Occasionally, I'd quit to the main menu and make a backup of the entire save just out of caution.

All achievements popped after the ending cutscene as I've been playing on pc.

Does this backup method still works after the last patch? (the one that solved the problems with cheevos not popping)

Probably too soon to tell for certain. But a good way to know is die and make sure your stats screen at the guy in town shows a death, then reload one of the backup saves on that file. If stats screen shows 0 deaths you should be fine.

anyone able to confirm if this can be done on easy now that the glitched achievements patch went in this morning

*EDIT* confirmed can be done on EASY mode using back up saves. i died several times and just reverted to old saves. also FYI, achievement doesn't pop until after the ending cut-scenes

It seems loading backup saves isn't a sure-way; the best and just a tiny little bit more time-consuming method is still the old way of copying the save to another slot and then reload it once you die. The reason is those auto-saves sometimes occur right after you take damage or die and if you reload that wrong backup save, you may accidentally screw your run entirely.

There are multiple backups. As long as you load the previous one or the one before that the instant you take dmg or die its fine. And for dying you can always go to the stats guy in town and make sure the stats screen says 0 deaths. If it doesnt just quit out and load an even earlier backup.

The cheese method still works. I just got the achievement. Though, I always made back up saves on separate save slots. Others above have pointed out that using back up saves on the same save slots doesn't seem to work anymore.

Did all 4 achievements at once took about 3 hours but could have been much shorter, I spent most my time running around because I forgot where to go hahaha

An interesting thing happened to me while completing this - made it all the way to Shriek with zero deaths while backing up my saves regularly, and managed to die a couple of times during the fight. I thought I'd see it through to pop the lightless/shardless/speedrun achievements I was going for and get a little practice at the final phase, but after emerging victorious I was given the Immortal achievement as well 🤔

I was certain i managed to get the immortal achievement but the game said F@^# YOU

Not happy as apparently i had 3 deaths which should never have counted because everytime i nearly died, i hit exit and reloaded a backup save and yet, i have 3 deaths to my name ON EASY MODE

Hard mode immortal it is then

I would highly advise against immortal on Hard. The worm escape is extremely difficult on Hard and the deaths save instantly.

I can confirm that you can still get Immortal while dying during the final boss fight as long as you register 0 deaths before it. I kept dying during the last very phase of the final battle and the Immortal achievement still popped up for me

What a joke. DO NOT RELY ON BACKUP SAVES

Completed the entire game and was reloading to previous saves after dying. All of them except this achievement unlocked because apparently I have 1 death. So I check all my back up saves and now that death is PERMANENTLY on my save. I have to re-do the entire game again.

Maybe they have patched it bc I tested it and backup saves did work which multiple people confirmed. Or you had a death very early on and didnt catch it,so its on all your backups.

Warp back to Wellspring Glades on a regular basis to confirm with Motay that you don't have any deaths. I did it every time I unlocked a new spirit well.
Also I died 3 times during the Shriek battle and still got the achievement.

Just finished this on hard with shardless/not spending light on PC. Every time I died, I would simply reload the second backup save without quitting or anything. The only exceptions were when the game didn't let you (like bosses) where I would just quit to menu and load the second backup save from the file select and the final boss where I just died and continued as normal.

I was able to use backup saves throughout and ran into no counter issues. I did have to reset a freezed load a few times but it didn't affect the counter. After every boss/escape, I would go back to Motay to confirm no deaths.

I actually followed the author's Look at the Time speed run to do achievements simultaneously. Even without being able to directly warp, my time was 2 hours, 47 min. Plenty of time.

Awesome glad it worked out Defiler.

P1nko without definitive confirmation I cant recommend people continue after an escape death. Especially since there's a 'backup save, right before every escape starts. Too risky to have folks potentially lose hours of progress vs 30sec to reload a pre escape backup.

I can confirm that dying during races or boss fights does not prevent this achievement from succeeding, exactly as stated above. I recommend that whenever you can, go to the NPC to see if there is any death recorded in your save.

I can confirm that dying during escape sequences DO NOT count towards deaths. Back up a save before the boss and then check with Moratay afterwards. As long as its 0 deaths youre good to go. Mouldwood Depths suck for this achievement!

Playing on XBSX, I'm unsure if the cheese-saving method still works - Played up to the village and Motay showed 3 deaths. Each of the 3 times I died I immediately paused & exited back to main menu. Tried again with backup saves, however it seems the deaths persist and just remain on the record.

I have an early review copy. Figured I would let people know that this method is confirmed as its how I got it. I did One Life mode legit on Ori DE, but this game is a whole different beast. Way longer and WAY more opportunities for a quick inescapable death. Immortal doesnt mention a difficulty though, so it might be easier to do "legit"on Easy difficulty. Doesnt stop the insta death stuff though.

Yeah I know but that's still on the same slot. There are 10 save slots. Each one will have your "backup saves" that occurred before the death, but the death would have still registered to that save slot I would think. However, I have tested it for you and can confirm that my save on a run at 1h35min has two deaths on the stats at the guy in town, but the one on that same slot at 1h27min shows 0 deaths at the stats guy. So theoretically using the backup saves SHOULD work, but I cannot confirm it without testing and seeing if the achievement unlocks.

Just completed my first speedrun of the game at 1 hour 52 minutes on easy, clocking in Lightless | Shardless in the same go. Suffered a ton of deaths along the way but it seems plenty easy to clean up and avoid it- I did however neglect many of the life & energy upgrades, limiting myself to just 5 bars of health. If I go back to know where life powerups are along the route, I could probably do it with little time wasted.

Being unable to fast travel was hardly a worry. Just need to make sure you register key travel points that you'll need, and teleport between them when necessary.

Just practice Mouldwood Depths (and do it for your first wisp since it isn't made any easier by the other wisps and you'll lose less time if you do this first but die trying) and Willow's End then do it legit lol trust me you can do it if you got the other achievements I did it first try. If you want to do it legit don't do it with lightless or shardless, speaking of which water breathing is an absolute necessity because there are many locations where you can very easily drown if an enemy's ai messes up and doesn't hit the spot you wanted it to. Also TAKE YOUR TIME if you're doing this legit and take breaks and/or breathers if you're stressed or shaking. Also, as many of the comments above state, you don't need to worry about bosses or escapes, but still try your best because doing the whole game without dying at all is, trust me, extremely rewarding.

*MISSABLE*

This is recommended to be combined with "Look at the Time", but attempting it straight away and even on Hard difficulty is perfectly fine.

Unlike Blind Forest, environmental hazards no longer do one-hit-kills on Ori, but hazards during chase sequences can still instantly kill Ori. Therefore, taking things slowly is key. Once Ori takes damage, quickly escape from combat or the danger, find objects in the environment to yield Life Orbs to restore some health, or use the active ability Regenerate to spend Energy in restoring Ori's health. If possible, avoid engaging a large number of enemies at the same time, or use the powerful active ability Spike to take them out quickly. If Ori unfortunately dies, quit the game and reload an earlier checkpoint.

There are two sure ways to avoid registering a death. One is, similar to the previous title, copying a save file where Ori has never died to a different slot and reloading it if needed; two is talking to the chameleon statistician Motay, who keeps track of every stat, in Wellspring Glades, which cannot be accessed until the two early areas Inkwater Marsh and Kwolok's Hollow are completed. Until then, the only way is to proceed carefully and avoid taking too much risk.

The achievement is not as difficult as it might seem, but on the first playthrough you don’t even have to try - you’ll ruin all the fun of the game.
It is quite possible to complete the second playthrough, combining with Shardless / Without fragments and Lightless / Without light .
You can also try combining it with Look at the Time / What time is it , but for me, it’s too much.

The strategy for passing is simple - play calmly, as soon as you disappear, remember the current game time in the save slot, load a backup save of the game from the extra. menu of the save itself, after which you immediately exit, make sure that the save time has changed to the backup one, then copy this save to another slot and go through the problem area in it. In case of repeated death, you simply copy the save file again from the previous slot, which is much faster than the hemorrhoids with a backup save copy.
