How to unlock the Timely Demise achievement in Ori and the Will of the Wisps - Definitive Guide

Edit: This is presumably no longer missable and can be done via Time Trial under Quick Access as the Untouchable one has been confirmed to unlock that way after the achievement patch.

If you are struggling with this on Normal then do it on an Easy playthrough and/or equip the following shards:

1. Reckless (fully upgraded you do 35% more damage)

2. Finesse (fully upgraded you have 20% chance to do 50% bonus damage)

3. Lifeforce (you do 30% bonus damage when you are above 50% health)

4. Spirit surge (fully upgraded you do more damage based on how much Spirit Light you have, up to 6000 spirit light)

You can also get another 50% damage boost via two spirit trees.

On your way to meet up with Ku at the end of Act 1, make sure to go up through the first opening above you in the area with the grey one hit kill sludge to meet a guy who gives you a branch for a quest. Make sure to activate spirit well to thr right if him. Warp to town and talk to seed guy, then warp back and talk to him again for a seed, and finally seed guy again). This plants a tree in town that gives you a 25% damage boost.

You can also get another 25% damage boost from a hidden tree near the entrance to Midnight Burrows. The hanging light flowers match the stones nearby to the left (high flower = tallest stone, etc). Bash off them without touching the ground to open Midnight Burrows or the tree to the right. Numbering the flowers 1 2 3 from left to right, the order is 1 2 1 3 3 2 1 to open the tree door, and 1 2 3 3 1 2 1 to open Midnight Burrows. Can be obtained before finishing Act 1.

The Kwolok escape and fight can be seen at 1h 54min in the video below. This is on Easy but without those two 25% damage bonuses (or all but one of those shards), and is still a sub 2 minute kill.

@xNSHD I think I took more than 2 minutes as well but I got it the first time I defeated Kwolok. The fact that this and Guardian's Rest now both have a 1.50 TA ratio makes me believe that they're linked. Timely Demise was worth 121 TA points (TA ratio 6.05) in March 2020 but it's been worth about 30 from April 2020 onward.

This is a missable achievement, isn't it!? Why isn't it reported with the badge??

i sure this is bugged in a good way since im positive i took way longer than 2 minutes to defeat this boss yet the achievement still popped anyway.

I just did this twice at 90 seconds and it won't unlock? I'm doing it through the replay option since I already beat the game. Anyone else have this issue?

You will have to fight Kwolok at the end of the Luma Pools.

This achievement can be acquired on the easy difficulty setting. If it's set to easy then your attacks with the Spirit Edge do significant damage and Kwolok's attacks do minimal damage. Just keep attacking him with the Spirit Edge until he dies. Do not let up.

When the room fills with water use cn_RB to shoot up out of the water to attack him. You can get three to four attacks on him before you fall back into the water. I didn't worry about avoiding his attacks, I just kept hitting Kwolok until he was defeated.

Edit: nightw0lf commented that they used the same tactic on normal difficulty and it was pretty easy also.

Update: Looks like this may be a buggy+ achievement as it seems that there are more people with this one unlocked than actually have beaten this boss.

I did this on normal on my first try. As you described, I just kept wailing on him with the Spirit Edge as fast as I could and it still went pretty quick.

Great guide, thanks! I beat him in under two minutes by just spamming the spirit arc. I had the upgrade where it splits into four different shots. I think the actual fight lasted less than a minute, so I'm not sure whether the two minutes includes the chase or not.

I don't think the chase is included - it seemed like just the fight. To me, it felt like it would easily be over two minutes if the chase was part of it, and it seems like the description implies that.

I did this first try on normal as well without knowing about this achievement. But does it mean do the entire boss fight in 2min or just counting from the second phase? Either way I know for a fact I spent way longer then 2min on the whole fight so it was just glitched in a good way for me as it gave it to me anyways I’m curious if it did for others as well.

*MISSABLE*

This is best attempted on Easy difficulty, but is still doable on Normal and even Hard difficulty. Ori's active abilities Spirit Arc and Spike are recommended for this fight, which can be separated into 3 phases:

Phase 1: A chase sequence occurs first. Ori has to keep running to the left. During the later half of the chase, dive into water and use the passive ability Swim Dash as much as possible to travel fast and reach the boss fight area.

Phase 2: The timer for the achievement begins here. Kwolok is suspended in midair, so he is considered a flying enemy and is susceptible to the Spirit Shard Wingclip. If equipped with the fully upgraded Splinter and Quickshot, Ori can deal huge damage in a short time by firing right below Kwolok. Near half health, Kwolok will be stunned and he will still take damage, so take the opportunity to keep attacking; if Ori is at low health, use Regenerate to heal as much as possible before the next phase.

Phase 3: Water floods the area and there is no land for Ori to stand on, so Ori cannot heal for the rest of the fight. Staying in the water can be safer and Ori can Bash projectiles back at Kwolok to deal damage, but if the situation permits it, Ori should Water Dash out of the water and use Spirit Arc or Spike airborne to keep pressing on Kwolok.

The achievement unlocks as soon as Kwolok is defeated. Consult the following video should you have any trouble. All credit goes to its maker, Maka91Productions.

Having opened the maximum energy cells and pumped up the Spike ability, he destroyed half of his health in 20 seconds. Then, as the water rose, he stupidly spammed the accelerated dash of RB. Not the most difficult boss!

Video guide on high difficulty.
On easy, it is enough to shoot the pumped up Spike several times
