How to unlock the It was worth a shot. achievement in Outer Wilds - Definitive Guide

Simply go far away from the sun (bit more than 20.000km) and you will die and unlock this.

EDIT: Nope, just die outside the solar system. When you're far enough, get out of the ship and wait till you die.

For me it was around 23.000km, It seems a bit random, but around that.

Got it just before 23,000 as well, thank you for the achievement! I never would've figured it out!

This is a weird one... I took off and headed straight forward, am now at 29k from the sun and still nothing. There's gotta be a bit more to this (as in, what direction to head).

Figured it out! You need to UNBUCKLE in order to then freeze to death. So head out to 20k (or try it earlier) then get out of your seat.

LazyBunny600755 can you please update your guide?

At 40 000 km i decided to put my suit on and jump out the hatch and waited it out and finally freeze to death and unlocked it.

I just accelerated backwards away from the sun for around 15k. Frosted up, died, achievement poped up, back the the campfire. Took perhaps 7 minutes.

Ok, I get it. The km difference between us is the distance we do until the sun goes supernova in 22 minutes and die.

It’s just the end of a time loop when you’re far enough.
I got mine at 10k, after 22 minutes. 👍🏼

I was only about 10,000 km out. Definitely only happens when you reach the end of the loop. Don’t need to unbuckle or any of that.

It definitely happens at the end of the 22 minute loops. Just have to be far enough away. I was a little bit over 10.000 and got it at the 22 minute reset.

I can't seem to get this to unlock. Done it twice now, well over 20,000km away

@Funky Monkee I did it just on on my second attempt at just over 30,000km. Locked on to the sun and rubber banded the controller to pull back from the sun the whole time. My hand was getting tired hence the rubber bands laugh

Had a half hearted attempt after doing some other stuff first and it popped at around 12,000km. Odd.

I got the achievement naturally but I would like to add that I got a freeze death scene when the loop ended while I was inside the Ash Twin core. Maybe that location is also considered to be out of the solar system. Also, the quantum moon locations cant be tracked and they might be out of the solar system too. Just saying..

From my experimenting, the way to do it is to fly 10,000km away from the Sun with your spacesuit on (it didn't unlock for me if I wasn't wearing it), then unbuckle yourself and stand in your spaceship until the 22 minute loop finishes.

I did not unlock the achievement from within the Ash Twin core, even though you do get a freeze death in there. Then again, I've tried twice at massive distances from the solar system and haven't unlocked it anyway facepalm

Yeah, I still can't get this to unlock. Also, how is everyone getting so far away? Furthest I've made it is just over 10,000 km and that was with me starting and immediately going backwards away from the sun for the entire 22 minutes. I have no idea how people are getting to over 30,000 km. Is there a boost I don't know about?

Immediately went to my ship, locked onto the sun and started going backwards (rubberbanded controller). Got to about 41k at the supernova and kept going until I died, at which point the achievement popped.

This was my first attempt.

This is also a good time to get the "Cutting it Close" achievement, once you get over 15K away or so, hop out and use up all your fuel and nearly all your O2 and then hop back in, easy two for one!

I also reached 41,000+ km within the 22 minute time-frame.

As soon as you take off in your ship and clear the horizon, rotate left and lock on to the sun. Then press and hold the left stick downward for the full 22 minutes.

Your speed increases the further you travel, so think it was around -56,000 m/s when my fuel died and it stopped registering. Momentum kept me going the rest of the distance.

Very easy.

This was also an easy way to unlock “Harmonic Convergence”. Just equip the Signalscope while youre going away from Sun.

It's a lot simpler than anyone here thinks. It's probably just end a loop outside the solar system (I'm betting at the point your autopilot warns you). I got it at 19k km out because I did other stuff first. It matches the name since it's "it was worth a shot" as in "it was worth a shot trying to outrun the explosion". It explains the various numbers and states. I'm betting among everyone who got it 2 things were constant, being far away from the sun and it taking about 22 minutes since loop started.

Finally got it I had to literally just back up for the whole time loop my distance was like 3000km and speed was maybe 16k something, if I looked at the map it was the bugged the F out at that distance idk why but yeah, worked for me.

Mine was 35k, but I'm pretty sure it's do with the loop as fallouthirteen says, seems to be the only logical explanation for the fact everyone is getting vastly different distances. It took me around 20 minutes and I entered space immediately after the start of my time loop. Unbuckling did absolutely nothing at varying distances from 15-35k.

just to add a little bit more information.

the game runs on a 22 minute time loop
. The idea of this achievement is that you tried to escape the solar system before the end of the loop. hence this name It was worth a shot.

. Launch your spaceship make sure your view screen shows the sun and hold cn_down so that you travel away from the sun, edit from comment once travelling in the right direction you can let go of the directional pad and just wait . That is essentially it, you need to be outside the solar system.
People have reported popping this achievement anywhere from 10,000km right upto 38,000km. I hit 38000,km, but distance is not the key element to triggering the achievement, you need to be far enough outside the solar system so at the end of the loop you freeze.

Also you will know when the end of the loop is near as the music begins playing out of nowehere. You dont need to leave your ship or anything to cause yourself to die, just wait for the loop to end while in your ship, the achievement will pop and you will wake upby the camp fire again for a new 22 minute loop.

ALso you know when you are out of the solar sytem as when you press Y to use your tool they will be in harmony and play a tune

I am pretty sure holding down on the d-pad does nothing in regards to moving the ship. You may wish to fix that, otherwise you will end up confusing people.

I got this by taking off, turning around and locking onto the sun so that I could measure the distance, and then just going in reverse until I froze to death. It popped for me at around 38,000km from the sun, though it seems to be a bit random and you may not need to go that far.

While you're doing that, you might as well press Y to equip the signalscope and grab the "Harmonic Convergence" achievement too. As long as you're still aimed at the sun, and at least 15,000km from the sun (that's where I did it), it should get a signal right away and pop immediately.

Is there a quick way to zoom out, or is it supposed to take ages?

@NoHeroes94 It takes approximately 22 minutes for the Sun to go Supernova (the blue explosion that kills everything in the solar system), or if you're outside of the solar system, the same amount of time to freeze to death. Either way ~22 minutes is how long it takes if you're just going backwards in your ship away from the Sun.

This video is recorded in Portuguese but it gives you a visual reference on how to get this achievement and "Harmonic Convergence".

Special note: You will start a new loop after getting the trophy. Also, you can get Harmonic Convergence trophy_silver.png

Easy but long trophy. Jump on your ship and fly into space. Target the sun and start by using ls.png to reverse thrust and go away from the sun. When you're very far, press triangle.png to get Harmonic Convergence trophy_silver.png

When the loop will end, you will get the trophy.

You must be at least 10000km away from the sun for the achievement to trigger properly.

In the game, the sun explodes at certain intervals (seemingly)
And it is at this moment that you should be far away from him (just fly as far away from him as possible)
I just flew off to...

(after he died, he immediately got into the ship and began to fly upward and an explosion occurred at these coordinates and ( ) I got the achievement!)

The trophy speaks for itself. We head towards the sun and press full backwards for all 22 minutes that we have.
If the autopilot suddenly turns on, turn it off with the up arrow.
