How to unlock the Matchmaker achievement in Oxenfree - Definitive Guide

In order to obtain this achievement, you must infuence Nona so she and Ren end together. There are three key moments in which you can do it, and an optional thing that

IMPORTANT: Seems that "I am the firestarter" is giving trouble to some people when attempting this achievement at the same time. So, when doing this, be nice to the other characters or this won't unlock.

- At the beach, when Ren and Jonas are going to jump the fence, don't follow them yet. Go talk to Nona and tell her nice things about Ren.
- Not sure about this, but could influence the result too. When in Harden Tower, choose Jonas as your companion so Ren and Nona stay together.
- At Adler's Estate, when searching the house, go talk to Nona near the boat and, again, talk about what a nice guy Ren is.
- Finally, when you are at Bridge Stand in order to send the signal that opens the bomb shelter, you'll enter on another of those time loops. Before using the tape recorders in the bridge, talk to Nona and tell her that Ren knew she liked him.

I believe that completing 2 of these 3 conditions is enough (I never did the first one), but complete all 3 just in case. If you meet these requirements, you'll obtain the achievement during the "stat count" before the credits.

Did the three things together ending with me telling Nona at the bridge that Ren had hoped she liked him - did this at same time as fire starter and still ended the game with them not dating - can someone post a better solution?

Did all 3 on 2 different playthroughs. Have to do a 4th run 'cause this didn't work. Ugh.

@Ed, in the bridge conversation, you have to tell her that Ren knew, not that he hoped.

Actually, I unlocked Firestarter and this one in the same playthrough, but I believe that could be the problem, as the conversation about them dating and the one about them hating you take place in the same moment. Maybe one invalidates the other in some instances. Try that, not pairing this achievement with firestarter.

Thanks for the info - was hoping to save myself a few hours and the glitchiness of the game (kicks me back to dash 3-4 times per run through) - well this time i will rescue Ren 1st and look at Clarissa / Mike together *sigh*

finally got it to work - you know it is all good when you get to the bomb shelter and ren states they are now dating (dont know if this is the case w/ firestarter as they are all so mad at you)

Mainly spot on, but at the Adler's estate there is no option to say nice things about Ren, merely to ask Nona a question about him. Given the grindiness of loading this game, you should probably change it to the correct wording so people aren't searching for that option in one of the dialogue trees.

I didn't get the achievement ever though I put them together.

Edit: I checked the guide and it still said 12/13. Then I checked my profile and that said 13/13. Weird...

I have never gotten an option to say nice things? Everyone seems to have no issues there, what am I doing wrong?

OK, to talk to Nona on the beach, you have to tell Jonas maybe later when he asks you to go to the cave, or the option to talk to Nona will not show up.

Can someone who's more competent do a better guide and list the dialogue choices? Yeah tell her nuce things gee that helps out a lot.

This is kind of confusing and I was stressed this did not work out very well.
I did the most positive things to get Nona and Ren to go and date. If you indeed enter the bunker and Ren and Nona start about dating, you did it very well.
The topic starter states this achievement should unlock right before the credits. In my case the "new beginnings" achievement did unlock, but the Matchmaker achievement did not.
You will also get the stats over the entire game. If Alex states Ren and Nona went dating, but studying in different spots you also did it right. If the achievement does still not unlock, hard reset your Xbox after the credits and start the game again. It should unlock after that. (It did in my case, pffeeeeew. )

The other solution I don't think helps out at all or maybe people prefer a guide that tells them what choices to pick. So this is my guide on which ones to say rather than a vague guide like "Tell nice things about Ren".

At the beach before going over the fence talk to Nona. The choices you need to do are B B Y. Silent on the last one works.

When at Harden Tower bring Jonas with you as this might help with getting them together. Ren being upset about it may seem like you also may not get the New Beginnings achievement. But you will if you follow the other solution for it.

At Addlers house before searching after talking to Clarissa inside go out and to the docks and talk to Nona. You'll probably arrive first in that case wait and then talk. The choices you need to do are Y B.

On the bridge don't wind the tape players instead talk to Nona. The choices you need to do are B X X

Upon meeting back with them the choices you can say are B X B Y then take the picture.

DO NOT go thru the backdoor instead use the radio to close the temporal tear.

First talk to nona at the beach about ren and ask if she likes him as a boyfriend, tell her to think about it

Next leave Nona with ren at the tower.

At Adler estate when you talk to nona (next to the boat) she should now say something like she’s not completely against dating ren anymore. If the achievement isn’t going to unlock she says something else.

At the bridge before winding the tapes, tell her that ren knew she liked him.

If the achievement is going to unlock, before you go into the bomb shelter they will tell you that they’re dating.

I think this is the default ending, getting them together but correct me if I am wrong.


There are a few Dialogue options scattered throughout the story to ensure them getting together.


When everyone is playing Truth or Slap, Make sure to steer away from Ren having to talk about Nona. He will thank you, if you were Successful


After the beach you head to the cave with Ren and Jonas. The conversation will lead towards Nona Pick the Option that says “ About Nona” and then pick the Option to tell Ren to “Go for it”

( I don't know if leaving her back will help with their relationship but it's what I did, and I still got the Achievement)

Make sure to tell her that Ren would appreciate what she had to say about him, and that He likes her too.


If everything works out, Ren and Nona should split off to wait at the Bunker While you and Jonas go to open it. And once you return they will be together.

There are a number of things during the game that will influence their relationship. I am not sure how many of them are required for the proper result, but do them all during your 'Nice' playthrough to ensure they start dating.

  • Before jumping the fence at the beach, tell Jones to wait and go talk to Nona. Steer the conversation toward Ren if possible.
  • When choosing someone to go to Main Street with, choose Jonas so that Nona and Ren stay at the tower together.
  • At Maggie Adler's house, talk to Nona before resolving the time loop with the tape players. Again, talk about Ren.
  • At Bridge Stand, talk to Nona before resolving the time loop with the tape players. Make sure you mention that Ren knew she liked him.

Ren has a crush on Nona, and as a good friend, it is your job to push them together. Do this by prioritizing Ren and Nona: talk to Nona whenever you are given the option (she's almost entirely optional as a character) and talk to her about Ren, rescue Ren first before Clarissa, and make sure to give Ren and Nona a lot of time alone together. You will know you were successful by the time you get to the bunker, as Ren and Nona will talk about how they'll be going on a date once you leave the island. The trophy will unlock at the end of the game during the epilogue photograph.

This must be done during your nice playthrough, as getting them together will completely negate both your mean playthrough and your silent playthrough.
