How to unlock the I'm the Firestarter achievement in Oxenfree - Definitive Guide

In order to obtain this achievement, you must make all your friends hate you at the end of the game.

IMPORTANT: This achievement is not compatible with "Matchmaker" and "New Beginnings".

You should be mean with them at every possible occasion, and follow these crucial steps. Beware of spoilers:

If you meet these requirements, you'll obtain the achievement during the "stat count" before the credits.

I thought the same when I read that, but I think that if she "disappears" then she's not in the photo at the end (the moment when the achievements are handed out). Just follow the guide, I'd say

If you choose to leave her using the gate, she disappears, and, as SuperTigerWoods says, she's not in the final photo. As she's not there hating you, the achievement doesn't unlock.

I did what Kanchanaburi did as well:

At the end, Clarissa wasn't there. Michael was. And I'm the firestarter. Twisted firestarter.

Just another confirmation on the "Not Save Clarissa" earning the "I'm the Firestarter" achievement. Did exactly as said above, got the "conversation is meaningless" from the ghosts and still unlocked it at the end. I told Michael to "go to school here" as well.

I am pretty sure it is impossible to save Clarissa if you don't find Maggie Adler's letters. I don't know why no one seems to mention this. Without the letters you lose a ton of dialogue options so you always end with "This conversation is meaningless" because you don't know any of the spirits names to talk to them directly.

So, yea, you might want to mention that so people don't just waste time like I did. Finding the letters again is really annoying, though.

Ok, if anyone was trying to do a quick playthrough like me and didn't want to pick up letters and can't save Clarissa because of it, I have an easy fix for you. The last checkpoint is right when you wake outside of the bunker before you meet up with Nona and Ren. After they disappear (which they won't do if you have all the letters) you can choose the option that says "Addler's Letters" or something like that, then go to the Comm Tower directly north of you. Go up the path and pick up the letter by the sign. This will teach you about a Crewman named Francis Salter that you can then talk to directly to diffuse the ghost situation. Just keep choosing "Friendly" dialogue options until you get the chance to address Francis. The other two people you can learn about from letters for those who are curious are Anna and Henry.

It is possible to save Clarissa without the Maggie letters. Just use your radio to interact with the triangles. I did this on my first playthough without any letters or anomalys.

Followed the guide and I got this and "New Beginnings" as well in the same play through so it is possible.

Does anyone know if ace-ing both the hangman game with the ghosts and the eye spy game in Maggie Adler's house makes it impossible for Jonas to hate you?

I followed the guide but since it was my third play through, I knew all the answers and Jonas was still friendly with me.facepalm

I can also confirm you can keep Jonas at a distance and still get both this achievement and "New Beginnings".

Only thing I would also add is that after the creepy episode at the Addler House, as you are leaving it, suggest you take the boat, and leave Clarissa behind - everyone is shocked that you suggested it.

I can confirm leaving Clarissa to the ghosts does NOT void the achievement. You should update the solution...

What the.... I just followed the list and got the bonding with Jonas achievement... then I reloaded and saved Michael and nothing happened. What am I missing?? I didn't help Jonas with the radio, why did it say I bonded with him?...

Just did my 3rd playthrough specifically for this, the only remaining achievement still locked in this game. I followed this walkthrough to the letter, yet ended up bonded with Jonas and screwed over on a completely wasted playthrough. What gives? Did I need to get all the test questions wrong as a previous commentor mentioned? Seems pointless to make a 4th run at it not knowing where I went wrong... just reloaded last checkpoint and saved Mike, just to try it without Jonas being my step-brother. No dice: still bonded; no achievement.

Followed this guide, also was horrible where possible and made sure I told Michael to leave at the end. I closed the triangle rather than go through the back door. In the end they were all grumpy with me so it pinged. At last!

I followed this guide exactly on my third play through and no achievement. On my 4th play through i did the exact same thing except I failed both the classroom scene and the adler house scene and doing that pissed off all of the characters because I didn’t try. The achievement popped after that play through. Also I believe to save Clarissa you need to find at least 1 of the adler letters so the ghost release her.

Hey guys, i know a majority of people know about this, but, for the people struggling to save Clarissa, I would simply close the portal. I tried saving her with dialogue and failed (so I quickly dashboarded the game). If you close the portal and click the choice that says something like: “I did it because I’m done with life anyways” then you should be set. As long as you follow the major points in the guide, everything is alright.

PS: I never collected any anomalies and only collected the unavoidable Maggie letter.

Let me know if you guys are struggling at all :)

I also managed to unlock this without saving Clarrisa. That seemed like the most "evil" thing to do actually.
I was hoping to get Matchmaker at the same time, but as many other people have reported this doesn't appear to be possible.

Accidentally messed up the guide and went to save Ren first instead of Clarissa. In order to fix I just made sure to be absurdly aggressive to Ren because he was borderline tolerant with Alex until you admit to trading Clarissa. Thanks for the guide!

The fact that I was as mean as possible for every single dialogue option and sometimes outright savage, yet I still did not get this achievement makes me hate this game.

Just a couple things, you don’t need to pick up Amy letters to save Clarissa just use your tuner and don’t walk out the back door at the end, I did it twice on my mean and silent playthrough. I was not able to get firestarter on my silent playthrough bc I still bonded with Jonus but some people said they were lucky and did. So I would make your second playthrough the silent one in case you get lucky and grab all the cheevos and save yourself from a 3rd playthrough.

Thumbs up! From my playthroughs, in addition to the solution, I got one question wrong in the quiz bit, I didn’t find anything in Adler’s house and I said I thought Jonas was a moron when looking for Ren. If people are having issues with Jonas, I would say go for that if you haven’t done so!

Even if you don't pick up any Adler letters you can still save Clarissa by using the radio after they say the conversation is pointless and disappear. I did this and still got the Firestarter achievement for doing all the other mean stuff throughout the playthrough.

I can confirm that you cannot get both this and "The Strong, Silent Type" at the same time. I failed the tests, tried to reload the last checkpoint after finishing the silent playthrough and being a dick to everyone before going into the bunker, sacrificed Clarissa, but still I did not get the achievement. So you need to be mean through the whole playthrough.

Down voted this guide. What the fuck. I followed this guide and wasted 2-3 hours of my life. I ended up bonding with everyone?! This is unbelievable. How fucking misleading is this guide. Many others in the comments had the same experience! I closed the game and went back and tried leaving Clarrisa behind to see if that fixed your complete fuck up of a guide.

Going back and leaving Clarrisa and telling Michael to go so he dies left me only bonding with Jones. I was mean to him on every occasion possible and threw him under the bus often with big decisions you mentioned in your guide. Didn't get the achievement. Fuck this game.

Followed the guide above and got the achievement, seems keeping Clarissa or not won't have an effect (maybe if Michael makes her 'happy' by the end if he's kept alive too). Guessing only Nona, Jonas, and Ren's matter for the mean factor based on the above information, but idk; best of luck.

"When facing the ghosts underwater, don't leave through the back door. Save Clarissa."

Is this necessary? Since it's the mean playthrough, surely betraying Clarissa would positively contribute towards this achievement, right?

I did it. ANd I left the bitch clarrissa, who i imagine to be hot, cooling off in the ocean!

I was mean to everyone, but at the end I couldn't save her. I restarted from the checkpoint a few times, but the ghosts kept leaving me with no other option but to 'leave clarissa' and so i did.

I did save Michael afterwards, well, not save him, he came back to life because I didn't convince him to go to school. And well...

The acheivement popped.

Another confirmation that you can get "I'm the Firestarter" and "New Beginnings" in the same playthrough. Follow everything that amenazamenor JF listed in the solution up until the underwater part at the very end, you CAN sacrifice Clarissa by going through the portal/tear.

Then during the "past memory" scene with Michael, when he asks you for advice tell him to "leave and see what happens" as it ensures that he is sacrificed and Jonas becomes your step-brother

I was able to bring Michael back from the dead and also be the firestarter on my "mean" playthrough. I collected all anomalies and hidden letters on my first playthrough, so i guess the knowledge gained from that is able to be recalled in future playthroughs.

I unlocked the I'M THE FIRESTARTER achievement and the THICKER THAN WATER achievement on my third playthrough.

Just wanted to confirm that this achievement is NOT incompatible with New Beginnings. I followed the guide to make enemies of everyone, and also advised Michael to leave town at the very end, and popped both I'm the Firestarter and New Beginnings on the same playthrough.

Okay, so I don't have this achievement yet, but I figured I'd do the silent playthrough second on the off-chance that I might pop this and save myself the third playthrough. Unfortunately for me I didn't get this, as (like HawkeyeBarry20 above) I bonded with Jonas. The only thing I feel I could have done differently was the bit at the end with Jonas and the tape recorder. Whereas I went through the door without even starting up the tape recorder, I think the more unfriendly thing to do might have been to start up the tape recorder and then refuse to use the radio on the tape recorder when Jonas asks, and then go through the door, if it's possible to do it that way. It might be worth trying this for anyone doing a silent playthrough second, as it might be enough to tip Jonas over the edge. Clarissa already hated me at the end (saved her by closing the portal with the radio, btw), but I can't speak for Ren/Nona's feelings. Either way, there's nothing to be lost by trying it this way.

4th attempt. Followed the game walkthrough on this website and I had everyone distant/annoyed with me at the end and it didn't pop...wtf? So i quit the game and went back to the final sequence and left Clarissa behind because bringing her didn't get me the achievement. After leaving Clarissa and asking Michael to stay (and keeping him alive) it worked!

This achievement is compatible with New Beginnings. I just completed the game and got both at the end. I followed this guide and ended up distant from Jonas, but I let Michael die, so Jonas was still my step brother and both popped.

I can also confirm that you don't need any of the letters for this achievement. Just use the radio to close the triangular gate as others have suggested.

Could also add to the solution that you will also unlock the following:

OXENFREESecret AchievementThe Secret Achievement achievement in OXENFREE worth 71 pointsContinue playing to unlock this secret achievement

Plus, if you call out Ren for lying and slap him as suggested that gives you:

I can verify that the suggestion mentioned by JBS 80 makes no difference in the outcome, not in my game anyway. Since I exited the game before the credits were finished, I could replay the sequence starting right before entering the bomb shelter.

This time, I chose to give Jonas the idea of helping him with the tape player after which I still walked away: no effect sadly.

Had to do a fourth playthrough in which I did only two things differently: mess up both tests the ghosts threw at me. In both tests I didn't do anything, and in both cases I managed to pissed off Jonas, probably tipping him over the edge in the end.

I think the failure of the two tests should be added to the solution as crucial steps.

The steps are also mentioned in the solution for completing the game (2nd, mean playthrough):

I gave mostly mean answers and rude comments. What really does it is

Make the deal, and if asked when you have good and bad news, admit you made a deal. This will TOTALLY piss everyone off and hate you since you

I don't know if saving Clarissa affects the achievement, but I left her to be certain I did the mean playthrough well :)

Just be rude to your friends all the time.
Some actions that I think affect this achievement the most:
0
0

10 May 2021 00:00

For this achievement, you have to take as many actions as possible that will upset your friends. I don't know exactly how many of these are required, but just do them all during your 'Mean' playthrough (Step 2 in the roadmap) to be safe.

  • Accuse Ren of lying during Truth or Slap, and slap him (see the "Renjamin Spanklin" achievement)
  • Do not talk to Nona before jumping the fence on the beach
  • Go help Clarissa first after visiting the Comm Tower
  • Blame Jonas for what happened in the caves
  • Get all the answers wrong in the army base (the correct answers are US Army RCS, Cookies, 85 - so pick others or say nothing)
  • Take Nona with you to Main Street
  • Do not talk to Nona at Maggie Adler's house
  • Do not find all the items at Maggie Adler's (the correct items are TV in bottom left, painting in top left, picture in top right - just do nothing during this scene)
  • Accept the ghost's proposal regarding Clarissa, and make sure to tell Jonas right after, and then tell Nona and Ren over the phone
  • Do not talk to Nona at Bridge Stand during the time loop
  • Do not hug anyone before entering the bunker
  • Do not help Jonas with the tape player inside the bunker
  • Close the gate when you are underwater (rather than walking away)
  • Bring Michael back to life (refer to "Thicker Than Water")

Some of these aren't tied specifically to this achievement, but are important for all the achievements you'll want to do during this playthrough, so I included them to be thorough.

Just be an asshole whenever possible! Look out for your own interests and don't try to save your friends. It is vital that when a deal is made for Clarissa, you take the deal, then proceed to mention the deal to your friends whenever possible. You should also aim to get Renjamin Spanklin, You'd Just End Up Hating Each Other, and Thicker than Water during this playthrough; see those trophies for more information.

Remember: not all dialogue options will have a good and bad option. It's okay to just not say anything.
