How to unlock the New Beginnings achievement in Oxenfree - Definitive Guide

In order to obtain this achievement, you must win Jonas' sympathy during the game. To do this, try to be nice and comprehensive with him, and respect these very important points.

VERY IMPORTANT: This achievement won't unlock if you meet the requirements for "Thicker than water" at the same time. More info inside the spoiler tag.

Beware of spoilers.

If you meet these requirements, you'll obtain the achievement during the "stat count" before the credits.

I haven't won this yet am I correct in assuming you don't want to bring Michael back from the dead either?

Don't have a way of confirming it as I already had this achievement when I unlocked the Michael one, but I met both conditions at the end, and Alex said "I call Jonas my other brother", so I believe you can unlock both at the same time.

I told the ghosts they could have Clarissa and I still got the achievement.

@ Zombified: Yes, I would say tell Michael to leave town.
You can unlock this while still doing the playthrough that makes all your friends mad at you ("I'm the Firestarter"). You can keep Jonas "at a distance" (the game calls it this at the end) and still have everyone hate you/leave town/never keep in touch, etc. I would say follow amenazamenor JF's guide for that.

I tried to follow this guide and got the ending where Alex called Jonas her "other brother", and the stat said I "bonded with [my] new friend, Jonas", so that makes me think I met the requirements. However, Michael also survived. I didn't unlock the achievement in the end, so I assume the wording means that Michael has to die and Jonas has to be your actual stepbrother for this to unlock.

* WARNING: spoilers ahead *

This is not a real solution, it's just a tip for those who - like me - enjoyed the first playtrough and ended up with Michael as brother: by KylKo's walkthrough you need 3 runs to get all the achievements, one for (almost) everything the Jonas ending, one for making everybody hate you and one for not saying a word during the whole game (x2 Michael ending).

You can avoid to start a 4th playtrough only to get the "New Beginning" achievement just by going offline right before the final "boat scene", when Michael ask you about what to do.

Complete the game as you would normally do and go past the credits, then go to Manage Game Data and delete your savefile.

At this point go back online and any achievement you eventually unlocked by completing the game (like, in my case, "The Strong, Silent Type" for not saying a word during the whole playthrough and "You'd Just End Up Hating Each Other.") will pop up, then start the game: your last savefile will be downloaded from MS Servers :D

This time, tell Michael to leave to unlock the "New Beginnings" achievement and save a run ;)

Just an FYI on this, you can actually reload your last save after getting the achievement:

"Thicker than Water"

See details below in the spoiler section.

Refer back to "Thicker Than Water" and do the exact opposite. Basically, make sure Michael leaves town with Clarissa or goes to school if they broke up so that he dies in the past during his going away party, then Jonas becomes your step-brother in the present (rather than Michael coming back to life).

This trophy must be obtained during your nice playthrough, as the mean playthrough requires you to go for Thicker than Water and your silent playthrough will give you that same ending by default. Basically, just be nice to Jonas. Take him with you whenever possible, say you're glad he's joining the family, listen to his stories, etc.
