How to unlock the Identity Corruption achievement in Path of Exile - Definitive Guide

For this achievement you need to use an item called a Vaal Orb. I have about 5 Vaal Orbs, they randomly drop from enemies and chests and such. I used it on a magic amulet with 27 intelligence and got a regular amulet with 10% increased elemental damage with attack skills. It seems it randomly rerolls the item, so be careful what you use it on, it could be worse.

I can't test it, obviously, but the description says "new implicit mod". This might mean you won't get the achievement unless the vaal orb actually adds a new modifier to the item, so it may take more than 1 orb to get this, as sometimes using the orb seems to do nothing and sometimes it makes the item worse.

I used an orb on two different items, a rare helmet and a magic wand, and didn't get the achievement.

Made the second paragraph a bit clearer. If it makes the item worse or does nothing it doesn't add an implicit mod, so it won't unlock the achievement. It's luck based. Sadly this game has too many luck based achievements like this one, although this is probably the tamest of them all. There's another for adding a white socket (also requires a vaal orb) and the chance is supposed to be 1 in 4 and I've used more than ten with no dice.

Unfortuntely all you can do is keep using them and hope you get lucky.

Just to add some clarity. The "implicit" mod is the mod that is separated by 2 lines in the item description. For example, for wands, it is usually "% added spell damage". To get a new implicit you must corrupt the item and have that specific mod change. Also, most armor has hidden implicit modifiers that minorly affect move speed. You can still roll these to change them.

If you are wanting to go specifically for this achievement then it is best to use it on rings, amulets, and belts to avoid the chance of changing a socket to white. However, since there is the other achievement to get a white socket you might want to use a socketed item instead until you get one of the achievements.

Also, according to the PoE database, it seems every item has a 1 in 4 chance to roll a new implicit. However, sockets will roll first and they are also 1 in 4 so if the item has a socket it is slightly worse odds.

Like with maps, vaal orbs can corrupt the mods on an item, in this case the implicit mod, which is the mod listed above all the standard mods gained through crafting orbs. This is best done on certain Unique items that have a bad/no implicit and hope for certain implicit mods, which can be gained through corruption that will increase the utility of the item.

The trophy will drop after you use the Vaal Orb on any equipment in your inventory and make it corrupted.

The item should not only have the note “Corrupted” appear on it, but one of its properties should change or a new one should appear
