A number of the "normal" skill gems have a Vaal counterpart. These can be obtained by dropping normally from bosses in corrupted maps, some strongboxes, or Vaal side areas (the most likely of the 3 to happen early on). You can also corrupt a normal skill gem into a Vaal skill gem, if that normal gem has a Vaal equivalent (you can check here https://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Vaal_skill#List_of_Vaal_sk... to see the full list of Vaal skill gems), using a Vaal orb.
Whatever Vaal gem you come across first you can socket into your gear even if you're not planning to use it, keep that socketed (can be a different socket as long as it's on a piece of equipped gear), just sitting there means it will be constantly gaining XP. Fortunately gems don't lose XP when you die, so you will get this eventually. Unfortunately gems require 330-340m+ XP to get to level 20, so it's a slog.
