I found 4 different animals you will automatically encounter during Act 1.
1 cat in the steets
1 dog at the windmill
1 dog in the building where you talk to the wife of the guy that got killed
1 cat in the garden where you question Ottilia

The others didnt seem to count as i petted them all

In Act 2 theres the same stray cat that you encounter on your way to the forest from Act 1 but it also counts as an individual so that should be number 5.

0:43 - Mirabilis at abbot's house (Act 1)
0:53 - Schlan at meadow (Act 2)
1:03 - Staub at Müller House (Act 2)
1:13 - Mirabilis at large garden (Act 2)
1:28 - cellar cat at cellar (Act 2, can also be done in Act 1) - For the A Fateful Sausage achievement
1:53 - Mausfänger at convent garden (Act 2)
2:02 - Sube at mill (Act 3)
2:13 - Son of Mausfänger at convent garden (Act 3)
2:26 - abbey cat at cloister (Act 3) - For the A Fateful Sausage achievement

You only need to pet 5 of the animals to get the 'A Regular Saint Francis' achievement.

If you feed the cellar cat in Act 1/2 you can get the 'A Fateful Sausage' achievement when you talk to Wojslav the day after you see and pet the abbey cat in Act 3.
