How to unlock the The Reaper Becomes the Reaped achievement in Persona 4 Golden - Definitive Guide
The Reaper is a hard boss enemy, that has a chance of appearing out of every 22nd chest you open. When it is possible for them to appear, you will hear the sound of chains. If a chest contains The Reaper, you'll receive two warnings asking if you're sure you want to fight.
If the 22nd chest you open contains an item, or you move to a different floor, the counter will reset. Gold chests count towards the total, but The Reaper will not spawn from one.
You can skip the counter by making a save before opening your 21st chest and reloading until you get a trap chest as your 22nd.
The fight itself is very difficult, a high level is recommended, or fight on the Safety difficulty so you can revive yourself if you die.

The Reaper has a chance to appear upon opening your 22nd consecutive chest upon entering the TV world and it drops ultimate gear upon defeat. The 22nd chest has to be a chest with a shadow in it (otherwise the counter resets) and also must not be a golden chest (you can get golden chests up until then, though). Your counter also does not reset if you leave a dungeon and enter another so long as it is on the same day (so you can go from the Castle to another dungeon if you want).
Here's an easy way to get him to spawn:
Here's an easy way to get him to spawn:
- Make sure you're high enough level, preferably in the latter half of the game. While you can use easy mode to auto-revive, you still want to be able to damage him.
- Head to the first floor of the Castle and open up chests, counting until you hit 20. You can get to the staircase to the second floor and keep going back to the first floor and the chests will respawn. I just kept going back from the second to the first floor as 80% of the time a chest will spawn close to the staircase. MAKE SURE YOU STOP AT 20; THIS IS IMPORTANT!
- After you open 20, go back out and save.
- Proceed to the fifth floor of the Castle. There are two chests here and one is guaranteed to be a shadow chest.
- Upon opening your 21st chest, YOU WILL HEAR CHAINS RATTLING. The chains will continue to rattle as long as you do not switch floors. When you hear this, your next shadow chest will spawn The Reaper.
- Open the other chest on the floor. If you do not get him to spawn then reload your save and repeat the last part. There is a chance you may open the chests in the wrong order so this is to prevent you from starting over.
- Profit
Compared to Persona 3 Portable’s Reaper, Persona 4 Golden’s Reaper is a bit of a cakewalk. However, you won’t be waiting around in a dungeon this time for him to show up. Oh no. In P4G, in order to start the Reaper fight you’ll have to encounter him when you open a chest.
Every 20 chests or so in a dungeon, you’ll start to hear the chains of the dreaded Reaper. When you encounter the next chest you’ll be able to initiate the fight. You’ll know it’s working because before you open the chest it’ll ask you whether you’re sure you want to open it.
The Reaper is a level 90 beast, and will often attack you with Mind Charged heavy elemental attacks. That means, lots of protecting party weaknesses. If you’re around level 80, you should be okay, although it is possible to beat it around level 75. Obviously, the higher your level, the better. And even better if you have a Persona that has no weaknesses, which at this point you totally should have. It’s worth taking Naoto with you for that exact reason.
The best part of beating the Reaper is that you get an ultimate weapon when you kill it. In fact, you get one every time you kill it, so if you want to kit out your party with ultimate weapons, you better start grinding out those Reaper battles now.
