How to unlock the I am Thou... achievement in Persona 5 Royal - Definitive Guide

The earliest possible opportunity in the game to unlock this achievement is when you embark on Kamoshida's Palace to pursue his Treasure on April 15 (4/15 Fri).

First, you'll get a tutorial battle from Morgana on how to create a negotiation opportunity (a gameplay trait most famous in the Shin Megami Tensei series that Persona is a spin-off from) with a demon (or Shadow as they're called in this game), which starts with an attack towards one of their weakness affinities. There, you'll create a Hold Up sequence where the Shadow(s) pleads for mercy, and you have the following three options: Perform an All-Out Attack to finish off your enemy, break formation, or talk to them. Press cn_A to talk where you then enter the negotiations, which gives you the following choices: Requesting a Shadow to lend their power to them, or offer money or items, in exchange for their lives being spared. Select the first option of lending power, where your enemy will offer a set of questions that will test your understanding of their feelings (basically being on the same page) and offer proof that you're trustworthy to them as an ally. Answer them the best you can, and you'll get a hint you've succeeded when the Shadow expresses joy you have something in common with them and introduce themselves by name, and then they'll transform into a mask resembling that of Joker, and he'll then absorb it.

Update: You'll have to successfully recruit your Persona in free exploration, as doing so in the tutorial battle will not unlock the achievement. (Shoutout to Boost17 for the details from their experience how they unlocked.) I got my achievement from recruiting Jack-O-Lantern (aka Pyro Jack from SMT) by convincing them that they're fine the way they are.

I did manage to recruit from the tutorial battle, but the achievement didn't pop until a successfull negotiation in free exploration.

To obtain new personas in the game, you must either defeat every enemy but one and hope the last one surrenders to you, or hit every enemy left alive with their weakness as the same time which causes a "Hold Up!" situation to occur. During this you can attempt to recruit the persona, or demand money/items. If you attempt to recruit them, you'll enter into a negotiation and must answer questions, matching the personality of the persona. Morgana will tell you how the persona is felling, and you can use the guide HERE to try and match your answers based on the question asked and the personality.

*MISSABLE*

One of the main methods you'll obtain Personas with is negotiation. Simply, most of the enemies in the game are Shadows, which become Personas if you're able to convince them to join your side. During negotiation, you will need to pick the correct responses in order to appeal to the Shadow's personality and turn it into your new Persona.

First, you'll need to down the Shadow by hitting it with its weakness or via a critical hit or technical. Once all Personas are down, you will enter a "Hold Up". The first option in the hold up list of choices enters negotiation.

As Shadows have different personalities, you'll need to tailor your responses to something they like. In order to succeed with the negotiation, you’ll need to get at least the second response correct. The first response is just meant to feel for what the Shadow likes to hear and doesn't affect the result of the negotiation.

Below is a table with the appropriate responses for each personality a Shadow can have.

  • Upbeat Shadows: Like Funny answers, indifferent to Kind answers, hate Serious or Vague answers.
  • Timid Shadows: Like Kind answers, indifferent to Serious answers, hate Vague or Funny answers.
  • Irritable Shadows: Like Serious answers, indifferent to Funny answers, hate Vague or Kind answers.
  • Gloomy Shadows: Like Vague answers, indifferent to Kind answers, hate Serious or Funny answers.

You'll first be able to get this trophy during the Castle Palace, after negotiation is introduced within a tutorial. tutorial itself doesn't count for the trophy as you're not able to fail it and Morgana will jump in to course-correct if you pick a wrong option. The actual first opportunity is right after the negotiation tutorial, where you’ll be attacked by two Bicorns. Their personality is Gloomy, so hit them with their weakness, which is Elec, and pick responses that sound vague.

Also, you will later be introduced to a mechanic where a shadow will beg for its life when it's low on health. You can negotiate to have the shadow join you, however this will skip the actual questions and let the shadow join you immediately. Additionally, Treasure Demons (see The Deviated Cognition) also do not require questions to be answered for them to be recruited. Both of these scenarios count for this trophy.

Bosses, mini-bosses, The Reaper, enemies that aren't shadows, and shadows of a higher level than you cannot be negotiated with. They’ll just get mad and you’ll have to pick another option like an all-out attack instead.

The trophy will unlock as soon as you perform your first successful negotiation.
