How to unlock the The Purpose of a Thief achievement in Persona 5 Royal - Definitive Guide

Edit: Thanks to adam118, good Super man, GYS GHOST, and FelipeFC12. For confirming that you'll need to keep a free slot open, when obtaining a treasure demon.

Just in case it still happens on Xbox. For me, and others on PlayStation the trophy wouldn't pop unless you had an empty slot in your Persona list, replacing another Persona on your list with the captured Treasure Demon wouldn't pop the trophy.

Treasure Demons have a higher chance of appearing at security level 100% in palaces, and during bad weather in mementos. This is a list of treasure demons, and where they can be found (From: https://www.thegamer.com/persona-5-royal-treasure-demon-loca...). I renamed the palaces, to the order you encounter them, to avoid potential spoilers.

It seems like it's the same as the Playstation version where you have to have a free slot. I got the guaranteed one in Madarame's palace and one in Kaneshiro's Palace but I was full and replaced it with another persona and no achievement popped either time.

Same as PlayStation, we have to flag it on TA as "bugged -"

Yup, confirming that I only got the achievement when I had a free slot, replacing a persona did not work

Confirming that you need an empty slot. I got one in a Palace, and two more in Momentos. The achievement didn't pop until I freed up some slots and caught a third in this session.

This can be easily done with the scripted introduction to Treasure Demons during the 2nd Palace (Museum). This first encounter is with an enemy that is weak to Nuke & Psy.

It's likely that none of your Personas have these elemental attacks at this point. Before going up the stairs to the second floor, toward the end of the first floor, right after the first Safe Room is an exhibition hall. There is a door adjacent to the Safe Room, near the entrance to this exhibition hall, which leads to a long hallway with an enemy and a chest at the end. This chest contains an Atom Ring, which will give Joker a Nuke move when equipped.

After obtaining & equipping this ring, proceed to the next floor where you go through the scripted sequence introducing you to Treasure Demons. Once you start the fight, use the Nuke move "Frei" to immediately knock down & recruit the Treasure Demon.

Important note: Others have reported that you must have at least one free slot in your Personas list when recruiting the Treasure Demon, otherwise the achievement won't pop.

For this achievement, you'll have to recruit the Treasure Demon. In order to recruit it, you’ll need to down the Treasure Demon by hitting its weakness, landing a critical hit or using a Technical to cause the Hold Up menu to appear. From this menu you can negotiate with the Treasure Demon to have it join your party.

Treasure Demons are rare enemies that will give more XP and Money once defeated. They can appear randomly inside the palaces, but are most easily found inside Mementos. You will see these while driving around as large diamonds, and can choose to initiate battle with them as you please. To unlock this achievement you must capture one of them as a persona, which will be done by either landing a critical or technical hit to cause the Hold Up! or the few treasure demons listed below have extra weaknesses that can be exploited. The remaining types do not have an extra weakness and must be hit with a critical or technical.

  • Regent - Nuclear, Psychic
  • Queen's Necklace - Gun
  • Stone of Scone - Curse
  • Orichalcum - Bless
Warning: This achievement is slightly buggy in that it will not unlock if you do not have an open slot in your persona roster. Despite being able to capture and register it by immediately releasing it, this will not unlock the achievement. It must be immediately added to your roster to get the achievement.

GLITCHED.

This trophy is currently glitched. If you add a Treasure Demon to your Persona stock while the stock is full, it won't unlock the trophy even if you get rid of another Persona to add the Treasure Demon. When going for this trophy, be sure to have a free slot in your stock before the battle.

Treasure Demons are a kind of Persona that aren't usable in battle, but can still be recruited. When they are defeated, they give a much larger amount of EXP compared to regular Shadows, and they give massive bonuses when they are recruited and used in fusions.

This trophy entails recruiting one for the first time. In order to recruit it, you'll need to down the Treasure Demon by hitting its weakness, landing a critical hit or using a Technical to cause the Hold Up menu to appear. From this menu you can negotiate with the Treasure Demon to have it join your party.

Treasure Demons are unique in that they will always join your stock when you attempt to negotiate with them. You don't even have to ask them any questions and instead, that process will be skipped entirely and the Treasure Demon will be added to your stock of Personas.

The first opportunity is in the Museum palace, where, about a quarter of the way through, Morgana will become enamored with a golden pot that inadvertently turns on some lasers. After turning the lasers off, you can interact with the golden pot to produce the first Treasure Demon.

Each Treasure Demon has different strengths and weaknesses when battling against it, so the key is hitting those weaknesses or going for a critical hit and then recruiting them with negotiation. Alternatively, Morgana has skills such as Lucky Punch, attacks that have a drastically increased chance of landing a critical hit.

Also, Shinya Oda's Confidant, Tower Rank 1, unlocks an ability called Down Shot. Using this ability will spend all of your gun's ammo in exchange for a guaranteed critical hit. Shinya Oda's Confidant is tied to a Mementos Request, "Winners Don't Use Cheats", which you'll get on 9/4. This means 9/5 is the earliest you'll be able to get the Down Shot as the request requires a trip to Mementos first.

Treasure Demons can be found in both Palaces and Mementos on certain floors. They tend to appear more frequently during Mementos deviations, the darkened floors of Mementos that show up randomly. Some Mementos deviations feature nothing but Treasure Demons, with no other kinds of Shadows appearing on the floor, so they are optimal times to try and get this trophy. (See The Deviated Cognition for more information.)

Below is a list of Treasure Demons with their weaknesses and their potential locations:

  • Regent, Emperor 10, weak to Nuclear, Museum Palace, Paths of Qimranut, Aiyatsbus, Chemdah
  • Queen's Necklace, Empress 15, weak to Psi, Bank Palace, Path of Kaitul

  • Koh-i-Noor, Priestess 25, weak to Gun, Spaceport Palace, Path of Adyeshach
