How to unlock the De Ragan Slayer achievement in Phantasy Star Universe - Definitive Guide

You earn this achievement about halfway through chapter 3 of the single-player story mode.
A couple hints to help make getting it easier/better:
1. By the time you go on this mission, you should have replaced a good portion of your beginning one-star weapons/armor with two-star items (or better if you can find them).
2. Stock up on Star Atomizers. You'll want at least a couple of them. Try to keep your teammates alive, especially Dr. Dorson. You'll earn more points for this mission if people stay alive.
3. Arm yourself with at least three guns or other ranged weapons (handgun, rifle, bow, crossbow). Link the ICE element photon art to each one. The De Ragan is a fire-type creature, so ice-based attacks will do more damage to it.
4. Just before you go on this mission, Free Missions will be unlocked for you. Go ahead and run through a couple of them; gain a couple levels and improve your photon arts, and buy the gear and items you'll need.
5. Aim. The De Ragan's weakest spot is his head. When you have a gun equipped, clicking the right stick brings up a first-person aiming mode, allowing you to aim vertically as well as horizontally. You can't move while you're aiming, so be ready to hit B or click the right stick again to exit this mode quickly.
6. Avoid getting hit. The De Ragan telegraphs nearly every attack he makes, and you can learn to anticipate his moves to avoid taking damage. Try to stay away from being directly in front of him or the direction his head is facing. He can breathe a line of fire or fireballs with a limited tracking ability, and he can charge straight ahead. He also rears up for a slam that hurts everyone too close to him (melee range), or swing around for a tail slash. When he goes airborne, he'll breathe more fireballs (run perpendicular to its direction to avoid these), or fly fast, causing a shockwave on the ground that you can also avoid by keeping to his side.
Remember, the faster you kill him, the more points you'll get, so before facing off against the De Ragan, make sure your weapons are all fully charged. From the AMF base, you can go back to the city and recharge them without losing your place in the mission. Take advantage of this.

Please note, as stated in the first sentence, this is earned in the single-player campaign; it is not unlocked if you beat him online. The online servers will be shutting down September 7, 2012, but this achievement will not be affected.

About how long into the game does it take to get to this point? Hour? 2 hours?

This boss is fairly easy. Make sure you have enough of each healing potions (20 if you can, that’s the max you can hold) and stay underneath him or as close to him as you can that way he wont be able to hit you with his most powerful attacks. When he goes up into the air move around that way you have a less chance of getting hit. If anyone dies during the battle don’t worry because after a while they will come back to life and join the fight again. After a while the battle will end awarding you the achievement.
