How to unlock the Abyssal Adventurer achievement in Phantom Abyss - Definitive Guide

Edit : Since the official full game release on January 25th 2024, the requirement for this achievement has changed. It previously was to reach rank Divine 3 in Adventure Mode, but thankfully they made this achievement way easier to get.
Even though the guide is outdated, I feel that they are some tips that still might be useful to this day. wave


Old Guide :
Before I give you some tips to make the achievement easier, here's a breakdown of all the ranks in adventure mode and how much reputation you need for each one of them:

Wayfarer I : 200 rep

You can earn reputation by doing the following : collecting coins, collecting essence of dead players, number of floor cleared, buying blessings and collecting the relic. Also, the only way you can lose rep is if you die (not significant until you reach champion).

The first spike of difficulty you will most likely experienced is when you reach rank Champion and oh boy it's only gonna get worse from here. Especially in rank Legend/Divine (The traps/obstacles can be brutally unfair and it will take longer to clear floors cry)

***Luckily, you can avoid losing reputation if a temple is too hard.
If you have 1 heart and you know you're about to die, you can quit the temple or alternatively exit to the dashboard if you can't pause the game and you do not lose reputation. ***


Since this game is a roguelike, some temples will be easier than others. You can determine the difficulty of a temple by its first floor (If you find it too hard, quit and load a new temple)

Personally, the only whip I use for Legend/Divine was the forsaken whip (You lose half a heart instead of the usual 1 heart, but your screen gets pitch black for 2 second every 30 sec). It's also worth mentioning that this game is not a speedrun, take your time even though the ghosts seems to tell otherwise.

May as well add some additional notes about this alongside your guide, but be aware that this is gonna be somewhat extensive.

First off, make sure you get this achievement last. Currently there’s a glitch that has a relic repeatedly get put onto its pedestal upon entering the game or completing and exiting a run or dying which completely bugs out any remaining achievements you have left to get; this appears to only happen when you reach Divine 3. Apparently according to one of the devs this’ll be fixed in the next patch, due “soon”, but until then get this last. Bug’s been fixed, and a code of cn_LB + cn_RB + cn_Y was put in to force a manual achievement sync if anyone has other problems with the achievements.

Also specifications on the reputation stats:
Essence: +1 Rep per Essence collected;
Floors completed: +10 Rep per floor completed (doesn’t apply to relic floor);
Coins: +1 Rep per every 10 coins you’re holding at the end of a run;
Blessings: probably +15-25 Rep per Blessing;
Relic: +200 Rep;
Death: -75 Rep at Champion, -150 Rep at Legend, -200 Rep at Divine; don’t remember the Rep losses below Champion.

As for whips, I used (name might be wrong, effect definitely isn’t) the Wooden Whip (gain half a heart at the start of each floor but dart statues shoot faster) for Legend 3 onwards, the sustainability it gives you is phenomenal, especially in Legend 3 where temples are 9 floors long. That’s in addition to the fact its downside is pretty negligible, unlike the Forsaken Whip where it is a pain in the arse that might get you killed. Would still highly recommend looking out for half damage at Power Shrines though, the two together make Legend 3 pretty tolerable.

I did not suffer blindness at all for two more runs from go, so it wasn't just a UI bug on my end. It was only removed when I quit my third adventure run and had to re-pick another whip.

To be clear, I started Classic, found the negative removal perk, finished that run to the end. Started Adventure with no blindness, finished that run. Started another with no blindness, finished it. Started a third and had to quit, putting me back at the statue with the whip I had used prior to Forsaken (for whatever reason it does this). Equipping Forsaken again gave me back blindness on level 1. Xbox version.

I can confirm that the glitch with removing a negative on a whip still works and helps a lot, especially as the levels get harder.

Just to add on - completed this today, and used the Knight whip so I would have 3 extra hearts. I got very lucky towards the end with the amount of Key shrines that would pop up (the shrines where you can buy blessings with Keys and not coins). These were huge and I would recommend keeping your eyes peeled for these, as you can get perks like banishing the guardian, take half damage, or heal half a heart at the start of each floor!

I would say timer is doable, but things like icy feet+wind, or the one that makes you die in one hit while holding a key/crystal make it about 10 times more difficult. I personally used the super dash whip, which let me skip entire rooms, especially if you can get other mobility upgrades from shrines or the temporary power tab.

I agree, definitely take your time on the first couple floors to get as many upgrades as you can early. I also never bothered with the "+starting coins" upgrade during the adventure levels, but spending some of my built up keys on that helped a little for abyss mode.

I agree with using the Forsaken Whip, that ones got me to Divine 1 so far although be aware that the temple guardians can really screw you over with the blindness. To pass this, wherever you can try to find the shrines and I occasionally got to choose to banish all guardians, which gives you so much more time to make your way through a temple.

Seems like there's a glitch right now with removing the negative on a whip. As long as you don't die or quit, the negative will remain removed on every new run, after finding the negative removal at a shrine.

I found it relic hunting on classic, and was able to start 2 successful adventure runs from the very start with no blindness on the Forsaken whip. Quitting the third run reset it.

As far as difficulty, I had a real hell of a time with Legend (bad RNG??), once I hit divine it was much kinder to me. Some temples are built like brick walls, just the way it is.

Except for this bullshit on my final run, costing me about an extra hour of play.

Seems like there's a glitch right now with removing the negative on a whip. As long as you don't die or quit, the negative will remain removed on every new run, after finding the negative removal at a shrine
That glitch appears to be visual only, still died from a fall with the Lightning Whip when that was active.

i personally used the knight whip and fire whip, getting the removing guardians completely nullifies the downside of the knight whip. I also liked the crikey whip and the bone whip with healing from water on last levels with water on them

Since there's no penalty, I suggest quitting a temple immediately if Devouring Rage is guarding it. In my opinion, it's the worst guardian to deal with. I refused to do any Rage runs after Legend 3.

I highly recommend the Knight whip... If you can find the perk that halves damage you become pretty much unstoppable, the debuff is far better than dealing with blindness as well, especially if you can banish the temple guardian

I’d wager it’ll require you to complete a temple at Unchained difficulty so it’s up in the air as to whether or not it’s easier imo.

It seems like Abyss mode is a lot like the old classic mode. It will take some luck with the challenge modifiers and a good start to get through. I've got the abyss levels several times now but the new modifiers can be brutal, e.g. Icey feet + crosswinds may as well just kill you. Tag team is nasty but manageable.

Full release version still need to be adjusted, if you get blood bond and got no phantoms left from the 2nd half, that run is ruined because touching the sphere keys result in an instant death. I’ve encountered this 3 times and had to abandon my runs, was already in inferno or abyss. Other instant deaths are quite ridiculous, though I think all of them except for the blood bond challenge are bugs/glitches as the game doesn’t have any explanations in the codex. Lost 3 runs by instant deaths, was at full health or at least 3 hearts with Forsaken wimp by falling off ledge in a dark area, getting crushed by horizontal double-crushers and falling in a hole while hit by a moving laser trap at the final area. Anyone also had instant deaths?

Beat the easiest difficulty of Abyss mode, it didn't pop for me.
EDIT: the another guide says press RB+LB+Y at main menu, it worked for me.
The game is way easier than before the full release for sure, but bugs/glitches can cost you extra pain and time. Sometimes I got extremely unlucky by having Gotta go fast, Time limit for 4 mins, 100% coin drop when hit, Greedy Phantoms and others all at the same time though. Difficulty it's not that hard but the RNG part is quite hard, since you cannot get rid of any of them

You definitely have to be good at the levels but the RNG can be your worst enemy. I'd almost say if you get them 4 minute timer to just restart your run. The last floor was was always grab two keys to unlock the door and once inside you had to run around and whip 3 crystals. One time I even had time challenges stack and needed to do it in 3:30.

For tips I used the whip that reduces damage. Obviously upgrade everything you can, coins was a game changer for me since I didn't use them for regular levels. Especially in early levels take your time and look around for chests. On my winning run I didn't get the challenge that took coins from being hit and I had 5 or 6 upgrades. This also helps look for shrines that give blessings. Getting three hearts or removing the guardian for three floors are huge.

After 1.0 release the achievement requirements changed and now is more manageable.
For it to unlock now you "only" need to clear a single temple in Abyss Mode.
Difficulty doesn't matter, you can go for unchained if looking for a challenge, but heroic (the easiest) will work fine. Remember to upgrade your character if you have any remaining coins, specially heart containers and whip length.
About the run itself, the whip that worked better for me is the one reducing damage to 1/4, although the first floors are already capped on how much damage you can receive, the last 2 floors is when this whip really shines, and you really will appreciate it. Furthermore, the perk for reduced damage didn't show a single time for me in the altars, but the next most useful (IMO) perk, which is to heal half heart (currently bugged, heals a full heart) appears pretty consistently.
Other than that is just a matter of luck until you receive a simple temple with the toxic gas guardian and reasonable combination of negative perks.

If, for any reason the achievement don't unlock when you clear the temple don't panic:
- Close the game
- Launch the game and wait at the main menu (where you select to continue)
- If you are on xbox press "RB+LB+Y"
- If you are on PC press "Ctrl+Shift+Y"
- Repeat a couple of times if needed

This combination, as explained by the developer on discord, forces the game to check completed achievements, and it worked fine for me.
