How to unlock the Whip Expert achievement in Phantom Abyss - Definitive Guide

To get this achievement you need to unlock all whip skins. You will want to do this once you have done all the levels at least once and have purchased all the upgrades.

I did have a glitch where I managed to unlock all the gold pedestals, which means I should have had all the whips. But it didn't pop the achievement for me. When I checked all the levels, I noticed one of the green levels I had the gold shrine unlocked but not the prestige whip. I replayed the level, it gave me the whip and the achievement popped.

There is the basic whip you have access to right from the get-go, this whip gives you no benefits and you don't use it for any of the other stages. You then have each stage-specific whip, these have specific skills that can help you out. You then have the prestige skins. The prestige skins are the ones you want to unlock for this achievement.

Green Stage: 6
Blue Stage: 6
Reg Stages: 6
Purple Stages: 4
Total: 22 prestige skins total.

To get these you will need to replay each of the stages, but with additional challenges added to make it more difficult. To add these additional challenges, when you're in the stage menu you want to press X to load up and modify the challenges.

You'll then be on a new screen. On the left you will see the stage rewards and above it you will see the stage challenge level.

I suggest adding challenges to reach the "gold shrine" reward as you'll need to get these for another achievement anyway.

Now, when it comes to adding challenges pay attention to what guardian will be bugging you during the level.

For instance, if you're dealing with the dude that spits bombs at you - you want to avoid the modifier that increases the guairdans damage.

I always max out the dangerous waters as it isn't too much of an issue.
I then play around with the other ones, with a focus on putting the modifies that increase damage to traps at max.

The ones I advise you never turn on are
- Hollow Phantoms: Phantoms drop no essence when they die (essence is what other players drop when they die, it's like a blue orb and can really help out with a quick health boost)
- Greedy Phantoms: Phantoms steal coins from chest (coins are what you use in the stage to buy upgrades. If you turn this on, you will most likely miss out on getting coins)
- Gotta go fast: Take damage over time, unless you dash (this one can add so much unneeded pressure, and if you end up in an awkward spot with a guardian on you - it can really screw you over).
- Loose Pockets: Drop coins if you take a hit (You will most likely take a hit at some point. Dropping the coins can be annoying, you can pick them up but if it's in a dangerous spot you can really be screwing yourself over - and again, coins are needed for upgrades so you really want to keep them)
- Blood bond: If hurt while holding a key or crystal, you die (I don't need to explain why this is bad)
- Blessings Hurt: Buying a blessing deals damage (blessings are the end of level upgrades you can get. You really don't want to be taking damage when you want to upgrade)
- Time limit: complete each floor within a time limit (you don't need the added pressure)
- Blackout Go blind every few seconds (again, this can really throw you off your game)

Overall, I avoid modifiers that can impact movement or loss of health or coins.

When I start the game the first thing I go is I use the pool to buy an upgrade. If there is an upgrade to banish the guardian for three levels, and you only have three levels - I grab it. If you have four levels, I buy something else and hope this pops up in the later upgrades.

My usual go to are upgrades that can lessen damage or heal. If you get the upgrade that heals you when you buy an upgrade early on, grab it! Then go for take no fall damage, double jump (if you time a double jump right you can take no fall damage), and reduce overall damage from traps. Ones that improve your dash can help as well. I also grab the double whip.

As you play the levels make sure you make an effort to explore and grab any chests for coins and also to look for shrines. the shrines sometimes gives you the ability to banish the guardian, it's always a good thing.

Also, if you can - hold back a little at the start of the game. If you wait, phantoms will run off ahead and some will die - when they die they "destroy" the trap that killed them and it can no longer hurt you. This can really help you out.

Other than take, the only levels I had real issue with were the ones with the bomb guardian. He's a dick.

Overall good luck!

You don't need to but it makes getting through this a lot easier/quicker than if you don't.

By the time I got around to starting this I had already maxed everything out anyway.
