Capturing becomes available after defeating a Pandoran nest (random chance to find one after a successful haven defence mission in an area with satellite coverage), and researching the nest and containment unit.
There are nine types of Pandoran that you'll need to capture (you only need one of each main type, not each of the bajillion different variants):
- Triton
- Arthron
- Mindfragger
- Fireworm
- Poisonworm
- Acidworm
- Siren
- Chiron
- Scylla
If you have an open vivisection request in the research tab, you're probably missing to capture that type since you need a live sample for a vivisection. If you haven't gotten neither a request for an autopsy nor a vivisection, then you probably haven't encountered that type yet.
The Scylla will probably be the one to give you the most trouble, for tips on that one see
