How to unlock the Rookie Pilot achievement in Pinball FX2 - Definitive Guide

Choose the Empire before starting. To do this, press either trigger to swap from Rebels to Empire before the game starts, then press A. If you're at the plunger, you've gone too far. Picking the Empire will allow you to disregard promotions. It also feels a bit easier to shoot down X-wings as opposed to TIE Fighters.

There are three targets you must hit to open the sinkhole. The targets are in the center of the table, slightly to the right, all in a row. You must hit each one to light it. Once all three are lit, you can enter the sinkhole, which is located in the bottom right hand corner of the table.

Now comes the difficult part. You'll be tasked with shooting down ships with the A button, while strafing with the triggers. The controls are pretty terrible, which results in some frustration here. Every time a ship gets by you, you'll lose 1 shield. Lose all 7 shields and you'll lose this mode. If you get past the first set of waves, the first "boss," the second set of waves, the second "boss," and the third set of waves without failing, you'll get the achievement.

You'll need to anticipate where the ships are going to line up in your sights and move left or right accordingly. It's nearly impossible to get all the ships. I found it more difficult to rapidly tap A as opposed to holding A, but the blasters come out much slower when holding A. You'll probably need to keep jamming that button, making it more difficult to strafe effectively. For the bosses, you don't need to do anything but hold A. I'm not even sure you need to do that.

I ended up needing to almost memorize where the fighters would come from, as the pattern does not change. Know where they're coming and you'll have more time to react. Otherwise, you'll probably need to get lucky, and it's hard to be lucky in this mode.

You may upgrade your shields so that you have more than 7 by shooting the right orbit on the playfield before going into the mini-game. However, filling up "upgrade" and cashing in by shooting the center top ramp doesn't always allow you to upgrade your shield. I found this to be more of a waste of time than anything. It's better to just give yourself more chances at the mini-game.

After surviving the third wave, the achievement will unlock. I made this video.

This is pretty much the pattern and how you should move your ship :
-wave1: LRLR RRLR RR
-wave2: LRRL RRR LRR
-wave3: RLRR RRLL LLRR

This table gives you the chance to upgrade your pilot by earning credits and hitting the left orbit that says PROMOTE. Avoid doing this at all costs and save yourself the annoyance because the more promotions you get the more missions you open, thus making it more difficult to get the one you want. So don't promote and stay where you're at. Now in the middle of the table are three black targets.

Hit those and then shoot into the far right sinkhole. It's best to shoot off the tip of the left flipper to make it. This will take you to lone fighter mode. You will have to shoot a bunch of ships down by moving right and left with the flippers and firing with the launch button. Ships will be flying at you from all directions and you will need to shoot them down because if they get past you part of your shield will be lost. And when your shield hits 0 the mode ends and you lose.

After shooting down several ships you will have a boss type ship that is easy to hit. Then it repeats for two more waves. It's really difficult to hit the ships and not have them destroy your shield and you will probably get frustrated. Just keep at it and you will get it eventually.
