From the main menu you want to select continue game, go to the pit, then select Vs. and wait until you find a game against another player.
Once you've finished the match (whether you win or lose) it will give the option in the top left of the screen "Push
to save replay"

Good guide but just to clarify you don't need to do this online. I got it from a random battle encounter in the campaign. After the match during the results screen I was able to save the replay.

The, Pants, Party
After any battle you win in story mode, you'll see a large "Save Replay" icon in the upper left of the rewards/results screen. Simply hit 
at this screen to save a replay of the battle.
