If you've played this game before the title update, all of your progress will count should count (there are reports of the Title Update erasing save files) towards this achievement so just keep collecting coins until it pops.
Coins are visible on the screen as you dig down, simply run into them to collect them. You will sometimes find coins in the blocks you break. You can also kill enemies and they'll drop a coin as well.
I found it easier to just farm the first two levels over and over again, starting with the third the difficulty just isn't worth your time.
