Although the event is not officially discontinued and the achievement therefor not officially unobtainable, it is worth noting that the last 'Cats vs Dino's'-event took place in december 2019. There is no indication if and when the event will return at some point in the future

[Guide]

Mystery portals are timed community events that appear at scheduled times.
Go to http://www.pvzgw2.com/events-calendar to find out when they appear.

Mystery portals feature only one gamemode at a time and this achievement can only be earned when the gamemode for that specific event is 'Cats versus Dinos'.

Cats versus Dinos is an elimation style deathmatch where death means you are out for that round. Teams compete to win the best out of a series of 5 rounds.

For this achievement all you need to do is complete a full game when you are on the cat team.
You do not have to win and you can die.

I think the last event was in August or September 2017, I think these two are unobtainable now. Sounds like the event wasn't well received so they just stopped having them and to Boss Hunts or Super Mix Mode only.

Hi, anyone know when the next Cats vs dinos portal event will take place? Is it really discontinued? Shouldn't these chievos be marked as "Un-obtainable" if that's the case?

Since the achievement has not been earned by anyone in the last half year i'm afraid that it is not looking to good right now. To my knowledge the developer has not confirmed that the gamemode is officially discontinued tho

Because it is a timed event, just like the ones in Overwatch sort of, except EA just picks when these go up, not necessarily marked by a holiday or certain time in the year. The events are not always on, and if they are, will only be for a few days.

This event in particular has known to be gone for months at a time. The few last showings for this event was 2018 Sept, Aug, and April before that.

You won't have any problem with getting into a match, the PvZ 2 community is still very much active on this game and lobbies and games are usually always full/close to cap. You just need to join a match and finish it.

I can't remember exactly when the doors open for events, you just have to keep logging in and you should get a town hall door opening animation.

Just logged in, and the town hall says it starts in 1 hour. Not sure what the timer is at though, as I'm guessing it could be slightly longer, all depends how the timer rounds up or down.

I think the achievement is more like " Play X rounds as a cat/dino", because I entered an already started game, did some rounds until the end, then quitted, then joined another game and voilà, achievement unlocked.

Just got the cheevo, thanks! The Town Hall is OUTSIDE of the Zombie/Plants HQ.
The achievement calls for a FULL GAME so you have to be present at the time of its start and end, if you enter a match in progress you won't get it until the next match.

2024 and remains discontinued. I think we should make a signed statement so that EA can speak out and do something so that these achievements can be achieved again. Since the game server is still active.

Yeah, that one's a bit misleading in that sense. Even went to the flags to see how the site defines them and it still isn't necessarily clear in this case.

I think possibly a flag for timed events might help make things much more clear for certain achievements since this flag in this circumstance really means "Discontinued temporarily" or until the event is on again.

I just got both the "discontinued" achievements about 1 hour ago, before I picked up my niece from school. They shouldn't really mark achievements as "discontinued" unless they are sure they are. I've got a lot of GFWL achievements that are NOT marked as discontinued but since they've migrated to Steamworks, you pretty much can't get them any more, and I think the reason they're not marked as discontinued is because you can still get them if you have a retail disc as opposed to a digital download.
