How to unlock the Soul achievement in Pneuma: Breath of Life - Definitive Guide

This required you to view 5 paintings, in a specific order using chapter select. After viewing a painting, the scene will change to a night sky. While looking at it, pause the game and select "Quit" and continue to the next one using chapter select. The paintings are as follows:
1 - Chapter Six: On your way to puzzle IV, you will walk over a half cylinder. While on the cylinder, move sideways to the left or right, and then you will eventually fall to the lower ground. Now move sideways towards the middle, and you'll go under the half cylinder. When you bring it to the middle, you'll notice a staircase underneath it. Walk down, hide from the eyes (behind a bench) in order to allow the door to open and make a run to the newly opened room. Once inside, find the painting marked with a "I", and then continue the rest of the sequence without breaking it.
2 - Chapter One: Continue through the level until you descend a large white spiral staircase. Look up to open the door at the bottom, and find this painting directly in front of you at the end of the hall after passing through the door.
3 - Chapter 5 - Part I: Continue through these puzzles until you end up at the circular treadmill puzzle. In this area, you can find the painting at the wall.
4 - Chapter Two: Continue until you have to rotate a bridge 90 degrees in order to cross a gap. After crossing the gap, there is an eye that opens the door out of this room, and the painting can be found directly behind it.
5 - Chapter Six: Same room as Painting I, but on the wall directly in front of you as you walk in. Do not turn and view Painting I, or this resets the sequence.

Viewing the above paintings, in the correct sequence will open a door in the final room. Walk forward to find a pillar and unlock the achievement.

Has this glitched for anyone else? I've repeatedly done the sequence as shown above but it simply wont unlock - the second picture already seems to be black - would my only option be to delete the game and restart the whole thing?

Did you walk to the last room after looking at V? I almost forgot and was just about to turn around towards I...

@jissi thanks so much that unlocked it for me after trying this 3 times. I thought that it would have unlocked after looking at painting 5 but you need to walk through the door under painting 5, have a pillar appear and *plink*, finally got it

I have the same bug trufflesonline reported in March; painting 2 is already black when I go to it. The room opens at the end and the pillar appears, but no achievement pops when you approach it (in fact in my game you can walk right through the pillar, as if it isn't there). Sigh.

Hmmm, curious; it seems the achievement has unlocked but it didn't *pop* so to speak. Very odd, but a satisfying if unusual way to complete a game!

it turns black as soon as you open the door and you look that direction.. i watched very carefully when i got to that part but i understand it can look like it's already blacked out before you actually take a closer look ;)

I followed the guide exactly, but the door didn't open? Have I messed it up, or is it glitched? I completed the game then skipped back using the chapter select method. When this didn't work I started a new game and used chapter select - still the door wouldn't open. Any advice?

It has to be done in one sitting.
I quit the game in the middle of my first try and the door wouldn't open after painting V.
Had to start all over.

Sure it isn't in the achievement list, but just didn't 'pop' at the time. That's what happened to me.
If you view the statue in the secret final room there should be no way you don't get the achievement.

Frustrating...

Got it on my third try!
Not sure if this is what made the difference but this time around I hung about outside the final plaque room once it opened before heading in and seeing the monument rise (in previous attempts I ran straight in.)

Another tip for people retrying is if when you last played the game you were in the room in Ch. 6, don't go chapter select but instead hit 'Continue' and you'll start close to that room again (instead of having to go through all of Chapter 6's puzzles from scratch).

Good luck!

What does "Once inside, find the painting marked with a "I", and then continue the rest of the sequence without breaking it." even mean? breaking what? line of sight with the painting? carrying the painting and not dropping it? either I am being really stupid, or that expression makes little sense.

Great guide, all went as planned except for the pop when I entered the last room and looked at the plaque. Thankfully the achievement did count anyway.

Lord MoleyPants: What he means by not breaking the sequence is that you shouldn't look at the numbered paintings out of sequence. So if you happened to turn around after "I" you would see "V" and have to start over for example. Also you probably shouldn't break any of the paintings ;)

As in alternative solution by LifeExpectancy "Make sure you don't look away from any of the paintings then turn back and look at it again when viewing them all, as this may reset the order, forcing you to load Chapter 6 again and start over"!

I think I did this by accident and had to do a 3rd run which worked.

Look at each painting, wait for it to change, and then quit to menu and whilst still looking at it.

Thanks for that, Maka.
Just as an additional note - you MUST do these without quitting out to home screen, and returning later. You've got to do all 5 in one go, otherwise the last door won't open. I completed the first painting, quit out, and came back several hours later. Loaded Chapter One to continue this achievement until the end, but it didn't work. I needed to start over! Fortunately, this guide made it take only 10 minutes or so. Thanks!

Agree - good guide. The last door also won't unlock if you go back to the same painting by chapter select after you already finished it. For example, going 1-2-3-3-4-5 instead of 1-2-3-4-5.

Excellent guide +1 - However - Has anyone else had an issue where this achievement didn't unlock properly? I did the achievement but no "toast" notification. So I snapped the achievement app and it said 100% although when I go to the achievement app full screen the game summary says 95% complete, 950/1000 GS and 10/11 achievements earned even though the individual achievement (Soul) says that it has been unlocked?!? It hasn't registered on TA either.

Not sure what to suggest. It worked 2nd time for me after I think I looked away from a painting and then looked back, but that meant that the door to the final room didn't open.
After going into the final room and looking at the plaque, the achievement didn't 'pop' on the screen, but I had the achievements App snapped and it updated in their as soon as I switched to it.
Can't see it makes any difference, but I was running under the New Experience whilst in the Preview Program. New Experience is on general release now, but only seems to have problems with memory intensive games like Destiny (probably now solved by destiny).
Sorry I can't suggest anything cry

OK, so I went through again and it still didn't 'pop'. The first time round I kept the game 'open' but watched Amazon Prime, then went back and continued. So this time round I did it all in one sitting. I also noticed Painting II looked already black but I suspect this is because you 'see' it as soon as the door at the bottom of the stairwell opens.

Anyway, the achievement app was saying it hadn't popped, but when I opened it this time it was broken and wasn't working. So I went in through the new achievements button in the menu and it said I was 1000/1000G and I'd unlocked all the achievements. When I went into the more detailed bit it says 0/1000G with 0/11 achievements, so I think something is wrong with the achievements generally at the moment.

I'm still waiting to see if it's properly unlocked or not - the Xbox app on Win 10 is showing no achievements on anything too. Fingers cross it's popped...

This is the "Soul Puzzle" Achievement
"Do them in correct order or it doesn't work correctly"

With Loading this takes about 20 minutes after game completion
The Soul puzzle requires you to view all the paintings in correct order starting from "I" found in Chapter VI.

Honestly it's much quicker to watch the video, though I'll write the steps in here as well for those that want a written solution.

Painting I
-This is found in Chapter VI underneath the rolling walk over area. Go to the side benches in the room so the eyes can't see you can run through the door. Once in the room turn around and walk backwards while looking up until you see the first painting . Quit to main menu
Painting II
-This is found in Chapter I once reaching the bottom of the spiral staircase. It's straight ahead behind boxes once getting to the bottom, look at it then Quit to main menu
Painting III
-This is found in Chapter V heading straight left to the first area. Solve the floor puzzle + the tile puzzle then head through the newly opened door. Painting is to the right, look at it then Quit to the main menu
Painting IV
-This is found in Chapter II, making your way through the level you will come across double eye movement based bridges. Once getting across and walking towards the door the painting will be on your left, look at it then Quit to the main menu
Painting V
-Same steps as Painting I expect just look straight ahead then look down as a new door opens for you to enter. The pillar will rise and an achievement will be unlocked!

Chapters 1, 2, 5, and 6 -

Starting at 54:46 in the video, I show the locations of the 5 paintings for the final achievement.

Painting I is in Chapter 6. When you reach the pillar with buttons on all four sides and on top, rotate the door to exit to the right from where you entered, toward the clear orbs and the blue flame. The rolling bridge has a door beneath it. Just walk off to the side then back under it to find the stairs/door. Head down and hide behind a bench so the 4 eyes don't see you, allowing the next door to open. Inside, painting V is on the far side roof and painting I is directly above where you enter.

Painting II is in Chapter 1 right after the door at the base of the long spiral stairs, at the end of the hall.

Painting III is in Chapter 5 in pathway I. After the tile flipping and pressure plate puzzles, you'll head up some stairs to a circular mural floor puzzle. The painting is on the right as you enter this room.

Painting IV is in Chapter 2. After you cross the FIRST rotating bridge (not the double bridge room), look to your left before going through the door.

Finally, painting V is back in Chapter 6 again in the same room as number I. See painting I above for location details.

View them in order number I to V to open the final door in the room with paintings I and V and get your final achievement. Make sure you don't look away from any of the paintings then turn back and look at it again when viewing them all, as this may reset the order, forcing you to load Chapter 6 again and start over. You'll unlock Soul upon completion.

Here is a video guide with English commentary for the "Soul" achievement!

18
10

04 Mar 2015 20:25

To complete the soul achievement, you have to look at 5 paintings all in order without breaking the chain. The first is on chapter 6 so I would recommend leaving this achievement until you have finished the game.

The first painting is located in chapter 6 at the end of the level if you go into the rotating box and head down the right path until you get to the rotating bridge. Stand on the bridge and spin it all the way to the right until you fall off, now go under the bridge and walk back to the middle where you will find a secret set of stairs where at the bottom you will find 4 eyes. If you hide behind the bench on the right, it will re-open the door and let you through. In the next room you will find 2 paintings the one straight ahead of you is paining 5 ignore that one for now, but if you turn around opposite painting 5 is painting one, look at it until it turns black and make sure not to look at painting 5 again. Now quit the game.

The second painting is located in chapter 1 in the room after the spiral staircase tower, If you get to the bottom of the stair case and look up to open the door then walk all the way to the end of the corridor you will find the painting with a 2 under it, look at it then quit the game again.

The third painting is located in chapter 5, if you head down route 1 and complete the puzzles until you reach the rotating painting when you reach that part turn right instead of doing the puzzle and you will find painting 3 on the wall. Now pause and quit as usual when you have looked at it

The forth painting is on chapter 2 in the 3rd room after you go down the stairs and through the corridor as you go to leave that room there is a painting hidden in the left corner next to the exit door, that is painting number four and there will be an obvious change to the picture when you look at it. When you have looked at it quit and head to last painting which is back in 6

The last painting is in the same place as the first one so if you follow the instruction I set for the first painting except this time look at painting number 5 and make sure you DO NOT LOOK AT PAINTING 1, if you look at painting 1 the chain will reset and you will have to look at them all again. If you did this right the door at the end will open and let you through, walk to the end of that room where a stone tablet will rise and you will get your achievement.

If you need help with any of these I have included a video guide below

This trophy is awarded for completing the third of the three optional puzzles present in the game. This will need to be done after you complete the story, as it requires jumping around to a few different Chapters of the game to look at paintings that are placed in certain levels. The paintings will change from a daytime to a night-time scene and must be viewed in the specific order, that is marked on them to open a door in the same room as the 1st and 5th paintings.

When going through the Chapters, you can quit out of them once the painting changes because the game saves them when you are viewing them. You don't have to complete the Chapters afterwards.

Painting 1 - In Chapter 6 you will come to the IV puzzle, which requires you to bring the blue fire through the glass balls. In the second room for this puzzle will be the rotating cylinder that you walk on that rotates under you. Walk off one of the sides of it, then walk under it to get to a ramp that goes to a lower room. Down this ramp will be four orbs on stands that follow you around and a door on the far wall. To through this door you need to hide behind one of the benches on the side of the rooms so that the door opens, then quickly walk through it. You'll notice in front of you on the wall above the room is painting 5. If you turn around and look at the same place on the wall above where you came in will be painting 1. Look at it until it changes to a night-time scene. If you are doing this after the story is done, then you can then quit back to the main menu but if you are doing this as your first run through chapter 6 then move beside the door so that the eyes can't see you, then head back through the door once it’s open and resume the last puzzle. If you do this make sure you don’t turn around and look at painting 5 or else you’ll mess up the order.

Painting 2 - This painting is in Chapter 1. After you go down the large spiral staircase and through the door you will be in a long hallway with paintings in the corner at the end. Painting 2 will be sitting on the right in the pile. It will probably already be changed by the time you reach it.

Painting 3 - This painting is in Chapter 5. In the first area with the set of 4 numbered puzzles, go through the door for puzzle I. Solve the puzzles in the hallway to get through to the large puzzle where you rotate the rings to form the picture. On the wall to the right when you enter this area will be painting 3.

Painting 4 - This painting is in Chapter 2. You will get to the room with the single black stone bridge that you rotate to get across to the other side of the room. After this there will be the eye that you look at to open the door. Behind this eye is painting 4.

Painting 5 - This Painting is in Chapter 5, in the same room as Painting 1. Go back to this room the same way as before, and this painting is the one you see above you on the opposite wall when you enter. You will probably activate it when you enter the room without looking at it, which will open the door ahead of you. Head through this door toward the wall to cause a large stone object to pop out of the floor, earning you the trophy.

This required you to view five paintings, in a specific order using chapter select. After viewing a painting, the scene will change to a night sky. While looking at it, pause the game and select "Quit" and continue to the next one using chapter select. The paintings are as follows:

  1. Chapter Six: On your way to puzzle IV, you will walk over a half cylinder. Once inside, find the painting marked with a "I," and then continue the rest of the sequence without breaking it.
  2. Chapter One: Continue through the level until you descend a large white spiral staircase. Look up to open the door at the bottom, and find this painting directly in front of you at the end of the hall after passing through the door.
  3. Chapter 5 - Part I: Continue through these puzzles until you end up at the circular treadmill puzzle. In this area, you can find the painting at the wall.
  4. Chapter Two: Continue until you have to rotate a bridge 90 degrees in order to cross a gap. After crossing the gap, there is an eye that opens the door out of this room, and the painting can be found directly behind it.
  5. Chapter Six: Same room as Painting I, but on the wall directly in front of you as you walk in. Do not turn and view Painting I, or this resets the sequence.

Viewing the above paintings, in the correct sequence will open a door in the final room. Walk forward to find a pillar and unlock the achievement.

You need to activate 5 paintings at different levels.
After activating the last picture, a secret room will open.
