To win in Cone Trial races, you need to be the first racer to go between 20 sets of cones that are lit. If the lights are out it will not count! If you hit a cone it will not count!
When the race starts, immediately drive the wrong way on the course. You should be able to get through 5-10 sets of cones before any other racers get near you. The lights between the cones will "respawn" after a short time. Simply find a location with 3 or more nearby and wait around for them to reset, then drive through.
The Tournament consists of 5 race tracks. The position that you finish on each track will award you points in the Tournament total. (10 for 1st, 8 for 2nd, etc.) To win the Tournament you do not have to win every race, you just need to have the highest combined point total at the end of all 5. If you get 1st place in three races and second in the other two, you'll win.
Using this method I was able to complete all 15 races (50cc, 100cc, 150cc, 5 tracks each) and no AI racer ever got more than 6 to my 20.

Like the Standard Gold, 50cc's the easiest. The object of this game type is to be the first to go through a boost cone (20 times). Once someone goes through a cone, it will disappear for about 8 seconds. I found it easiest to turn around as soon as the race started and go through the map backwards.
