To unlock Laoshi, defeat him in the final* (thanks, Supernova x360a) Match Play challenge in Career Mode in the Emperor's Garden. His ability, 'Zen Focus,' slows down the shot meter to make both button taps far easier to time.
When Laoshi uses his 'Zen Focus' ability against you, he almost always hits a ridiculous shot that will set him up in great position to win the hole. If he uses his ability on a hole, don't use one of your own! Save your ability to give you a leg up on another hole.
Golf smart and you'll come out on top. If you're having issues, trying it a few times eventually gives you a sequence where he'll make a few bad shots and you should be able to beat him handily. Good luck!

Try to use Frank as much as possible and try to work with your clubs to make sure that the accuracy and power are used at your own risk. That way, your chipping and putting will matter when your on the green. Otherwise, don't let the trees block the way you use your irons to get a better chance to win the hole.
