How to unlock the Cold Dead Hands achievement in Prey - Definitive Guide
You also need to unlock the Gunsmith III ability (unless you want to upgrade a science based weapon in which you will need additional skills.) Because of this I recommend upgrading the Pistol, Shotgun or GLOO Cannon.
To upgrade a weapon you highlight it in your inventory and press to open a little menu.As long as you have Upgrade Kits in your inventory you will have the option to upgrade the weapon.
If you wan't to get this achievement done earlier you can craft Weapon Upgrade Kits, you can find a Fabrication Plan in the Machine Shop in the Hardware Labs. In the back right corner on the Ground Floor will be a caged area, simply use a Recycler Charger or Leverage to move the crates blocking the entrance and the plan will be on one of the tables in the back.
Upgrade kits can be found all over Talos 1, most frequently inside of the different Security Stations. You probably won't need to worry about searching for specific kits. You can even find the plans needed to fabricate kits at a Fabricator, either from the Repair Bay in the Hardware Labs or you can download the plan from Sarah Elazar's computer in the Crew Quarters. A single Upgrade kit costs 3 Mineral and 3 Synthetic materials to create.
However, you will need to fully upgrade the Gunsmith or Lab Tech abilities in the Engineer Mod tree to fully upgrade a weapon.
Once you have at least one completely upgraded weapon you will have met the requirements, unlocking the Trophy.
Upgrade kits are found throughout the game, but due to their scarcity I recommend finding a weapon and sticking to only upgrading that one until it is maxed out. I chose to max out the shotgun. There are several stats that you can spend a kit on to improve. The first upgrade for each stat is initially available, but the higher tiers will require certain abilities.
I recommend trying to unlock this on your “Human Abilities Only” playthrough, because going for “Typhon Powers Only” or “No Powers/Abilities” will prevent you from having the abilities necessary to max out your weapon. "Gunsmith II" is required for upgrading security weapons, while "Lab Tech II" is required for upgrading non-standard tech weapons. A "Weapon Upgrade Kit" fabrication plan can be found in the Hardware Labs, in the Machine Shop, inside a caged room. You will need "Leverage III" or a Recycler Charge to move the heavy cargo blocking the entrance.
