How to unlock the 10,000 Units Destroyed Medal achievement in PROJECT SYLPHEED - Definitive Guide
This achievement is cumulative, and is awarded when you reach 10,000 ships sunk. Note that it is 10,000 *warplanes* sunk, warships do *NOT* count toward the total. At any time you can see how close you are by looking at Pilot Status in the main menu.
Also note that replaying a single level via the mission select in the "extras" menu will not count towards the total. To keep your totals across playthroughs of the campaign, you have to save your "cleared" game after you beat the campaign, then load that save, and start over the campaign again (your totals and weapons purchased will transfer over).
A full playthrough of the campaign will net you anywhere from about 900-1300 ships killed depending on what weapons you use, and how thorough you are. The best weapons (IMHO) for dogfights are the Condor 105AM as your main 1 weapon, and the Long Spear HBP as your main 3 weapon.
Before you really go headlong into this achievement, I'd recommend you also read my solution for the Gigaton achievement as well, as the two achievements obviously have some overlap.

To tackle both this achievement and the Gigaton achievement at the same time, instead of just playing levels 1, 10, 12, 14, 15, and 16 which nets about 280 warplanes and 66 MT, also play levels 4, 6, and 9 and you will instead net 650 warplanes and 72 MT per playthrough. I personally prefer to use the Maelstrom Bomb as Main 3 since when it is used properly it can take out 20 or 30 warplanes at a time.
To summarize:
Level 1: 100 warplanes in 4 minutes (0.1 MT)
SKIP Level 2 as it gives 130 warplanes in 22 minutes
SKIP Level 3 as it gives 115 warplanes in 18 minutes
Level 4: 45 warplanes in 5 minutes (0.5 MT if you bother with the warships)
SKIP Level 5 though the ratio isn't too bad at 110 warplanes in 12 minutes
Level 6: 150 warplanes in 14 minutes (3 MT)
SKIP Level 7 as it only gives 70 warplanes in 14 minutes (though 9.5 MT)
SKIP Level 8 as it gives 40 warplanes in 7 minutes
Level 9: 170 warplanes in 15 minutes (5.5 MT)
Level 10: 1-20 warplanes in under a minute depending on a Maelstrom hit
SKIP Level 11 as it gives 75 warplanes in 11 minutes
Level 12: 40 warplanes in 4 minutes - destroy all objective enemies and then a second S battleship will come. Make sure you are the one to destroy the first S battleship as that is the difference between 26 MT and 16 MT.
SKIP Level 13 as it is a long protection mission that is easy to fail
Level 14: 35 warplanes in 2 minutes (Maelstrom Bomb at the beginning)
Level 15: 110 warplanes in 14 minutes but more importantly 36 MT if you make sure you are the one to take out the 3 S battleships worth 10 MT each
Level 16: final boss just spam Cauldron Rockets to defeat it in 20-30 seconds
By playing levels 1, 4, 6, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15, and 16 and by skipping levels 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 11, and 13, it will take 60 minutes of flight time or 90 minutes of real time to finish a playthrough with 650 warplanes and 72 MT.

Your best bet for this one is playing through all the levels in the game (skipping NONE) using the Long Spear HBP weapon. Doing this can get you anywhere from 70-140 kills each level (dependant on the level, of course).
If you want to do this with the gigaton achievement, use the Maelstrom Bomb instead of the long spear on the following levels: 12,15, 16
Additionally, follow the guide listed by Pedle Zelnip for maximum effeciency for the gigaton achievement.
For using the Long Spear, remember it can have up to 60 lockons, and on easy it kills everything in one shot (sometimes two). The ammo capacity is also FAR more than youll need. Lock on to as many targets as possible and let loose. I've had periods of nothingness in missions since I killed everyone so fast!
UPDATE - Just blew though one run of the campaign, skipped one level (cant remember which one, i think it was a two-parter where you have to destroy some destroyers...), and clocked about 1100 kills. Hell, at least two levels I broke 200 kills! Not to mention the lowest number of kills I had on a level (not counting the 1v1 levels) was around 60.
This method is unquestionably the way to go for the 10,000 kills.

this can't be done in one play through the way to do it is in one save so clear the game and start over keeping your unlocked weapons and your tonage and kills and get 10,000 kills. Easiest way to do this is to farm the kills on easy difficulty. Make sure in some of the first missions to try and kill all the fighters not just the ones that are marked as objectives.
