How to unlock the Evil Nightmare achievement in Project Warlock - Definitive Guide
When you die, that is it. Game Over even if it’s the last boss you WILL have to start again. Shutting the game down and reloading it doesn’t work either as it saves on death so here is a few tips on how to get through this campaign.
First thing you need to know is you can quit the game at anytime and comeback to your current level although you will have to replay that level no matter how far you were through it. This is a great technique if you find yourself about to die, simply quit, reload and try again. Thankfully most levels take less than five minutes so it’s not much of a problem.
Next, upgrade the Axe so it gives heath back when used as soon as possible. This weapon will be a life saver especially when health items are low. Also I find a great technique is to jump around a corner, swing the axe and run back. 99% of the time there is a monster waiting for you around the corner and it sometimes insta kills them.
Other good weapon upgrades. (forgot the names of the weapons!)
Rocket launcher deal fire damage.
Minigun no windup
Flamethrower spear attack
Pistol to .50 Magnum
Flame damage double barrel Shotgun.
Shotgun to more powerful version.
Dynamite to pipebomb. (Great for setting up traps)
Crossbow to large bolts.
Laser gun to Railgun (great against last boss)
Levels to watch out for.
E2/M1 Turn right, secret wall for red key. Careful of Yeti ambush.
E3/M5 Secret gives early access to Minigun
E3/M7 Secret wall on the right side leads to the exit.
E3/M9 Secret wall on the left, then another on the left leads to the exit.
E3/M11 Enter room on the right and open secret wall on the left wall. Leads to exit room.
E4/M2 Early Rocket launcher secret wall.
E4 L3- The moment this level starts you will have three grenade soldiers and a giant mech who fire at you immediately. Watch out for several more around the next block.
E4/M4 Mini ambush at the start and a major roof top battle at the end.
E4/M6 Large amount of enemies outside of starting area. (note, enemies can’t enter start area, use to your advantage)
E4/M8 Giant robots and large amount of enemies outside. Kill from a safe distance.
E4/M11 Start ambush with floating robots. End ambush with four giant robots, two smaller ones and several enemies. Very quick death if not ready.
Extra note :-Some Hell levels (Episode 5) have instant death drops into larva pits. Be careful of where they are especially during intense battles as it is very easy to fall into them by accident.
E5/M4 Possible glitch of enemies stuck under the floor where you can’t hit them but they can hit you.
E5/M5 there is a secret wall in the room with the two giant blob monsters that leads to the very end of the level. (Room just on the right outside the first room that needs unlocking)
E5/M6 Start ambush of Hell Knights.
E5/M8 Start ambush of three giant bugs.
E5 L10- This is the worst ambush in the game. It starts with several tougher enemies (armed with heavy guns and rockets) who fire the second it loads and the room is fairly small with obstacles to get in your way. Best to arm yourself with the Minigun and shoot away. DON’T use explosive as you may kill yourself instead.
Also later on in this level you will see a large area with several enemies waiting behind some prison bars. This will only open when you go around the corner so place a load of trip mines in that room so when the bars open, they explode.
Final Boss. At this point you should have a good amount of health, supplies and upgraded weapons. Work him down using rockets, machine guns, shotguns and so on. When he is in his final form use the BFG type gun, hold the trigger and fire directly at him. I managed to kill him in two hits with this. Also run circles around him as it makes his attacks less likely to hit you but watch out for larva pools. On a side note, my first time playing this mode I fell of the edge of the map and died and had to do all this again! Be careful not to fall off the map like I did.
Hope this helps!

The fire weapons can make a huge difference, I'd say other than the .50 Cal upgrade to the pistol, take the fire upgrade path every time with all the other weapons.
Killing enemies with fire damage stops the vast majority of enemies that can have 2-3 more forms from transforming and just burns them to ash.
In my first playthough I took the Harvester upgrade to the Double Barreled Shotgun, and didn't even use it that much. Then in my Hardcore run I chose the fire damage Flak Cannon upgrade and it pretty much became my main gun after that. The Harvester turns it into a four barrel shotgun that uses 4 shells each shot, tons of damage sure, but the Flak Cannon can use maybe 1-2 shells to the same effect, and stops the enemy transformations while saving 4-8 shells. No contest there.

@EarthboundX The fire weapons mention was huge. I think the single most effective gun in the game is the Flak Cannon. It may not be the best in every scenario but it is awesome at conserving ammo. I noticed you cannot rely on it in every situation but when you are close quarters which is probably over half of all encounters the Flak Cannon is awesome. Additionally as mentioned it can stop later enemies dead in their tracks and prevent different stages of the same enemy. In my opinion the hardest episodes are the robot ones that are throughout the fourth mission. There are two many enemies that can shoot you and there are high damage projectiles.

I was looking at guides to get this achievement and I discovered in a Steam guide that there's a bug you can exploit to make this easier. It essentially gives you infinite retries.

I can confirm that it works. I just unlocked the achievement by doing this.
To sum it up, you have to have already finished the game to unlock the Single Stage option on the main menu. Then, you start a Hardcore save and play as normal. When you die, load up a level in the Single Stage mode and beat it. You will notice that the Continue option appeared on the main menu. Select it, and it will continue where you left off in your Hardcore save. Repeat this every time you die to continue without restarting completely.
I can confirm that it works on the Xbox One version. I just unlocked the achievement by doing this.
Edit: I forgot to mention something I discovered that wasn't mentioned by the person I linked to above. I noticed that when you replay levels using this method that your experience carries over. I ended up at level 31 by the time I finished the playthrough. Those extra stat points and perks probably made a difference in the end.

Does this still work?

I completed this game last year in February, and the guide I linked to had been made in April 2020. If it hadn't been patched almost two years after release, it very likely never will. I obviously can't test it now to see if it still works since I already unlocked the achievement, but I think the odds are pretty good that this still works.

The highest difficulty in the game. The main problem is that death in this mode is permanent and throws you back to the very first level.
However, if you first beat the game on any difficulty and then start on hardcore, then after death we replay any level through the opened chapter selection and after that you can continue the hardcore passage from the desired chapter.
The “Student” perk will also greatly help, which at each level gives a bonus upgrade point.
After completing the game on this difficulty, you will immediately receive all other trophies for difficulty.
