Portraits are profile pictures you can set for your profile ()

Now when I logged in they gave me a bunch for free but I can't imagine this will always be a thing, but it could at least be a way to get some in the future too. Otherwise, the intended way to unlock portraits are as goal rewards which are the in-game achievements. I have compiled a list of every goal that awards a portrait and if you already did these before the update you will have them automatically unlocked already.
I would imagine more would be added in the future too but here it is for now:

+ 5 portraits can be purchased in the archives for 3.1, Bones of the First Ones, for 80 ancient coins per pic (price could use a verify. Already owned them so couldn't guarantee price).
+ 5 more should be in 3.2, but it's currently not available for free.

+ Three can be purchased in the season 3.3 shop for 80 Raw Antherite each
+ 2 more are available with a gold pass
+ 1 more is available with a platinum pass
