How to unlock the Number One achievement in QUAKE 4 - Definitive Guide

DISCLAIMER: This achievement requires a lot of dedication and a full party of 4 diferent gamertags. It's a long journey and at the time of writing this the top place in the leaderboards has around 780k win points. Seeing that you get 6.030 win points per match and each match takes around 20 minutes, you decide if you want to commit to this or not.

UPDATE: (10 Set 2011) The top spot has currently 1.060.000 points.

---

The boost itself is easy but time consuming and depends on a glitch:

1. 3 people must organize a party and select Ranked > Arena CTF > Endurance, and the solo person (referred from now on as the "point-man") does the same but alone. This ensures that it will be a 3 vs 1 match. Note that the person who is in the process of getting to the top of the learderboards must be in the party of 3!

2. There are 4 maps:

Speed Trap - It's the ideal map. Takes minimum of 14 minutes and has a pit.
Relativity - Good map, takes minimum of 16 minutes and has a pit.
Death Before Dishonor - Good map. No pit.
Heartless - Good map. No pit.

3. In the party of 3, 2 people (the ones not going for the Number One achievement) must commit suicide 100 times, making their score (not win points, SCORE!) "-100". Make sure not to kill the point-man, not capturing flags and not even touching the flags because if you get one point for anything it'll be impossible to get "-100" in that match. Just suicide and don't do anything else. Pits are ideal for this. On Speed trap it's easy to find the pit but on Relativity it will take a while to memorize its location but you'll get it eventually. If you don't have a pit you need to kill yourself with weapons that have splash damage. The best one is the Hyperblaster. Bring it on top of a Scout or Ammo Regen rune and it'll be even faster to kill yourself and when you get back the Hyperblaster will be right there again!

4. The other person in the party of 3, (the one going for the Number One achievement) must proceed to capture 9 flags from the opposing team.

5. After 9 flags captured, the point man picks up the enemy flag and brings it to his base but doesn't score it! The person going for Number One should pick up the Doubler rune (to ensure faster kills) and then starts killing the point-man while he has the flag held and scores 3 points from a single kill. The point-man respawns and picks up the flag, that should be in his base, and the Number One person kills him again for another 3 points. Repeat until the Number One person has 195 score (not win points, SCORE!). If by any reason your score doesn't reach 195, you can kill yourself to remove a point, or if it's below 195, you can kill the point-man without any flag holding for 1 point per kill.

6. Final Step, if both suiciders have "-100", the Number One person grabs the enemy flag and scores yet again making his score 201, and the glitch will concede 6030 Win Points.

7. Just to sum it up. You get 54 Points for the initial 9 flag capturing, then you need to kill the point-man 47 times, getting 141 score, plus the 54 from before, you'll reach 195. Then, you score the last flag you'll get (1+5) points for it and reach 201. If both suiciders have "-100", you'll get 6030 win points.

---

8. A small tip:

195 is a multiple of 3 (65 * 3 = 195). To see if your current score will reach the 195 mark, you need to know if it's a multiple of 3 too. For example, imagine you have a score of 117. That's a multiple of 3 (39 * 3 = 117). But 118 is not. Since you get 3 points per kill you need to guarantee your score is a multiple of 3 everytime.

To do so, make a sum of the numbers in the score and see if the result is a multiple of 3.

Example:

117 > 1+1+7 = 9 - Good! 9 is a multiple of 3.
156 > 1+5+6 = 12 - Good!
191 > 1+9+1 = 11 - Not good.

And so on...

This tip is simple math applied to video games.

If by any chance you didn't understand, just ignore it. =)

---

Sorry about my grammar, I'm Portuguese, therefore not English-native. If you spot any bad grammar or simply a concept not explained correctly, tell me please.

Good luck!

---

Additional info:

- You don't need the Doubler to score flags or to get points. All it does is help you kill faster since you deal over 100 damage with a single Railgun shot or rocket.

- You don't need to get 200 suicides and 201 points. You simply need to have 1 more point than the total number of suicides, so you can do 300 suicides and 301 points, or 237 suicides and 238 points. It always works and the win points you receive is 30 per suicide + 30 win points for winning the match. (Example: with 286 suicides, you should get 287 points giving you a total of 286 * 30 + 30 = 8610 win points).

- You can get extra negative points if you kill a friend, which means, you can shot your team mates with the machinegun (other weapons are not guaranteed to work) making them fall into a pit and it will say that you killed you friend getting you -1 score for that.

Just to add if you boost with more people you get more points. 3k more per person 9030 for five and 18030 for 8 people but if you boost with more people you need a higher score 100 additional points per player 295 for five people.....

As of this writing the current #1 has a little under 130 matches played. If you assume he has 4 copies of the game (so didn't have to reciprocate), and did nothing but #1 boosting matches that's:

130 games * 30 mins max per CTF match = 3900 minutes or 65 hours.

So say 70 hours max as a nice round up to go from last to first. If you have to return the favour for others then multiply that by the number of people (if you're boosting with 4 others, then the total becomes 70 * 4 = 280 hours).

Yup, that's a grindfest.

Why do you need the doubler? I thought this doubled damage not points, so it would speed up the "Holy Shit" kills but it doesn't seem like it's essential given that the more time consuming part of the kills phase is the point-man getting back to his base.

By KAW 24 on 25 Jun 2010 11:10
A couple notes for anyone going for this :

* You do NOT need to get the "Holy Shit". Killing someone WITH the flag (without the doubler) will still result in 3 points. It's also safer to keep the flags away from each other (so not accidental scoring)

* You do NOT have to get to -200 and 201. The person with a POSITIVE score (going for points) needs to end with 1 more point than the negative scores. So you could have 4 players, 3 on one team with -50, -23, and 74 which will result in 74 * 30 -- or 2220 win points.

* You can also use the blaster/rockets/nail guns in combination with the regen or doubler powerup to kill yourself about 100 times in 15 minutes on the two levels without pits.

I'v been doing my 5,000 matches and have noticed a very sad, 15 year old little boy, (he has mental health problems for real) has decided to keep number 1 for himself. So much so tht he pays people out of his pocket money to do suicides for him. He doesnt even leave himself with enough for his medication.

Everyone who has gone before him to number 1 has probly had the same idea, but being mentally stable figured tht actually its a waste of time. But not this guy, hes really going for it. About another 100K since his number 1. Can u imagine being tht deranged? Wots really sad is tht he is a member of TA. I think he should be struck from the site.

Just a word of warning for anyone looking at doing this.

On the plus side hes helping preserve my TA ratio for this achievo.

Top 10 unlocks many many days before number one these days thanks to an asshole who continued boosting himself way beyond the top of the leaderboard just to screw over the boosting community. #1 is currently over 1.5 million points and #10 is around 370,000.

LOL, it actually is because this guide is not only for number one but for top ten too. So it is important that people know that the achievement might unlock at the same time.
well, nowadays, it doesnt since the difference between top ten and number one is almost the double!

I dont think I will go for # 1 or even 10 but rather do this once or more to expirement and get 6000 points and get the other cheev for the 5000 match points. Im gonna try having the 2 guys kill them selves a total of 59 times and I will cap the flag 10 times for 60 points and see if I get 1830 for that. Maybe you need a kill to get this trick to work though.
After reading a few posts on the #1 and #10 cheev it is possible that leader board for this game is capped at 750k or 850k for the two cheevs to pop. But it keeps showing a persons score as they pass these #`s. But when a person hits 850k they pop one or both cheevs. Or maybe the max score is fixed for the 10th position, both or none and I am wrong. Just a though and a possibility :)

The leaderboards can only show 5 numbers for the score, so the first number is cut out. But add and 8 before the 5 numbers of the top player and you should have the accurate score. It's 800.000+ that's for sure, maybe 900.000+ but I haven't checked in a while.

This is another Leaderboard achievement, just like GRAW and Kayne & Lynch. Which are also maintained to keep others from Unlocking.
So far 175 standard 6030 pts per match game which is 4 gamers to get within #1 and climbing daily.
5 gamers = 9030 pts
6 gamers = 12030 pts
7 gamers= 15030 pts
8 gamers = 18030 pts

Get 7 other dummy accounts or good friends willing to suicide 100 times and eventually you will get this, Good Luck to all.

Best when double-boxing with dummy accounts as your group will get more points per match. Also, should you be on the fence about this, or want to do it, do it now. Every passing week, thousands of points are added to the board, so the sooner you get it done, the less time you will have to sink into this.

And don't think you can do this and avoid all the drama. You WILL get embroiled in it, and it IS a factor you should consider. There are individuals (whom shall remain NAMELESS...this is not the place to point fingers) that continue to add points to the total, or accidentally add too much, and there are those that will search the gametypes to prevent your party from playing a points game (Bad company 2 and some other games have the same problem). You can get around this by having a full party of 8 and auto-launching the game, reducing your chances of getting blocked by randoms or "boosting blockers".

Also, what the guide does not mention is that you can do a reverse points match. Instead of one person getting points based on 1+(total suicides), if you end the match with 1 LESS THAN (total suicides), everyone who suicided 100 times will receive 3000 points. These matches are handy for people who don't have enough time to commit enough time for everyone to get a turn and there are 2 spare accounts running around doing the kills/flag pickups. This method ensures even and fair board growth for your group. One method is not better than the other, but they each have their different uses.

Also...current #1 value is ~1,132,000 points

I'm not sure I understood RRIKER's alternative method. If the total suicides is -200, and someone gets 199 points instead of 201, the suiciders will receive the points, but less than what you'd normally get? 3000 points to two players instead of 6000 to one player?

This is the best solution for this achievement and I did not want to open another solution just for an update. I just got the #1 achievement 24-Sep-2013 and my win point total is 1,275,140 (the last digit is chopped off, so it could be any number 0-9). Just a mere 160 points more than #2. I did not want to run up the score even more (every little bit helps).

Awesome the servers are still up for this. I may load it up to see who is out there. The leaderboard was only in the 60k range when we started and a guy kept boosting to jack up the leaderboard and retain #1. I think it was about 125k when I got it. We went one at a time, instead of spreading the points around. I was 4th or 5th in line.

lmao it doesn't take 300 hours! if you do it by yourself.. or you know people who are willing to help... i quad boxed the German Version.. the Leaderboard had 1,730,000 Points at that point and it took me 142 hours.

6030 Points in 20 Minutes on Speed Trap (including loading screen , countdown. etc.
6030 Points in 32-35 Minutes on Heartless & Death before Dishonor , Relativity (including countdown loading screen etc. )

so i'd say a realistic amount of points is 10.000 - 18k per hour depending on Map Luck so let's just say 12,030 per hour because that's a realistic amount after knowing the method maps etc. that's 145 Hours in total.. but you also have to add stuff like dashboarding , people bumping in your lobbies , people trying to annoy you etc. also you need to get used to the method learn the map layouts etc. so add another 5-10 Hours so i'd say 150-155 hours is pretty much what it takes.

if your looking for this achievement you will have to dedicate quite a long time to achieve this, as well as enlist the help of multiple partners.

the current leaderboard leader is not actively holding the spot in order to deny people this achievement.
thankyou by the way for contacting me, and for letting people know where we stand in our attempts to get this achievement.

I confirm, I'll get it really soon and it took me (with another friend - we have both 2 Xbox) around 250 hours (~180 to 200 games played for each of us). We did this 2h / day approx. during 4 months. Time consuming but really possible if motivated.

Update Jan 17, 2019

I know with the LB issues, there is alot of confusion so Im writting this more so to clarify what is the best way as of now. I didnt discover the info, Iven take it from various forum posts and placed it hear in 1 nice lil spot.

Set it up as So: (3v1)
~ Arena CTF
~ Endurance
~ Ranked (obviously)

Now How ever you are planning to do this Quad box, dual dual box, or 4 seperate ppl. The account on the losing should not be the host.
** jjaldana pointed out that with the time restraint, quad boxing is out of the picture unless you go for for:

~ 1 Capture
~ 1 Kill
~ 3 Suicides per

pretty sure you need to make sure that the acount that is being killed is not the host to do this.

To figure out who the host is start up the match, whoever gets the Quake loading screen is the host. If the "loser account" is the host, try having him restart his xbox console. This seemed to work for myself and seamonkeypowder.

Once you get the host on a proper account, we found that it stayed on that one account, cant confirm if this repeatable situation, but its hear just for your awareness.

So now you have 6 mins from the loading screen to complete your match, now since its set to endurance you will not get the required amount of flag captures, once you reach you desired points the "loser account" will quit out (thus this is why we dont want him to be the host)

Now Ill go into the Map/Point breakdown. I will update the guide with the proper map names tomorrow, during my next session, so bear with me.

Speed Trap
~ 6 captures
~ 1 Kill
~ 18 Suicides per

~ should take 4 mins and net you 930 pts

Map Heartless
~ 4 captures
~ 1 Kill
~ 12 Suicides per

Death before Dishonor
~ 3 captures
~ 1 Kill
~ 9 Suicides per

~ should take 5:30 mins and net you 540 pts

Relativity
~ 2/3 captures
~ 1 Kill
~ 6/9 Suicides per

~ should take 5:30 mins and net you 450/540 pts
* we usually ship this map so we dont know our way around

any questions or things to add let me know

Credit goes to Sabin IV, Bulletluckey, Vareer and jjaldana for the info.

These time constraints make it very hard to quad box! If you are doing the quite out method you might as well only cap one flag and get kills as kills give you more points.

also why is there a time constraint all of a sudden? can you link me to the forums you found that figured this stuff out? i checked to ta forums for this game and saw talk of a server issue but that they had done some maintenence and fixed them. nothing about needing to play less than 6 minutes a game

Sup. I did a follow-up post on the time constraint. We worked out exactly what the issue was. Naughty Quake warning
Leaderboards Not Tracking/Updating for Multiple Xbox 360 Games
But at least it makes it easier to know when to stop, then to time it from loading. Just don't go longer than 4:40 - which would be X5:20 on the countdown timer.
----
I am currently quad-boxing with another quad-boxer. It is great that the 2mins countdown is removed. So basically the only time wasted is the loading time. Which is about a min. Saving SO many hours this way.
----
Regarding who is the host, I have found it prefers to give host to older accounts then newer. Likely because of XUID. So if you create a dummy account, it shouldn't be the host.
----
Regarding the 4 maps, there are some maps you may be able to do more caps & suicides.
When we tested it originally, we were able to do 5 caps on all without issue (We tested it on average). But for the pit map (Speed Trap), it is very very easy to get suicides. So you may be able to do 6-7 caps (36-42 Suicides).
5 Caps: 930
6 Caps: 1110
7 Caps: 1290
8 Caps: 1470
9 Caps: 1650
10 Caps: 1830
We are currently doing the kill achievements. When we start the leaderboard boosting, we will be able to let you know how many caps you can do for each map.

I have to disagree Bulletlukey, nearly everytime we play one of our dummies gets the host spot, and last time the quitting dummy got it and wouldnt give it up.

Ive updated Map names and Caps/Kills

As said, I think it favors XUID. Which is a unique number ID assigned to your account.
Which means new accounts would have a higher number. The host seems to go to the players with lower numbers, this is because I have found older accounts seem to get host a lot.
I believe this is the case because when I did my matches played (1v1) my alt always got host - and that account was made first (Long story). And the 2nd alt account however never got host.

I have heard people were able to alter who is host by switching network connections (Wifi & Ethernet), or by installing the game to the hard drive, but I never had any luck with it.
I think I remember someone mention gamertag name (Alphabetically), but my alt had a different GT originally and it still had the host. And my second alt account name is very close to what my alt account had - different by one number at the end. So we know that isn't the reason.
The only thing that seemed to work is to have newer accounts.

I tried MANY things to get my main account host when using my alt account, but I had no choice but to use my second alt account.
When testing 1v1 host always went in this preference no matter what I did:
Alt Account, Main Account, 2nd Alt Account

Though, I am not saying that things happen and someone else gets hosts, as when my friend and I put in 8 players, it tends to fluctuate on who is the host, and sometimes an alt account gets host. Haven't looked into it too much when it comes to a lot of players, though I will have to when I do the leaderboard boosting.

I still think it's completely random whoever gets host. When I was quad boxing I tried with 10 different gamertags (Both old accounts and new accounts) on my 4 boxes, I also tried every possible way (Wired, Wifi, playing with game having installed on HDD, non-installed etc). I never got it to work, which resulted I had to do the 5000 games manually without doing the quit out method.

Rank in at Number One on the overall leaderboard. Sadly, once again, the only way to get into the leaderboard is to glitch or boost. Easiest way? Glitch like I described in General Multiplayer. It should take about 7 to 8 glitch games to be number one, depending on how high the number one player currently is.
