How to unlock the Number One achievement in QUAKE 4 - Definitive Guide
DISCLAIMER: This achievement requires a lot of dedication and a full party of 4 diferent gamertags. It's a long journey and at the time of writing this the top place in the leaderboards has around 780k win points. Seeing that you get 6.030 win points per match and each match takes around 20 minutes, you decide if you want to commit to this or not.
UPDATE: (10 Set 2011) The top spot has currently 1.060.000 points.
---
The boost itself is easy but time consuming and depends on a glitch:
1. 3 people must organize a party and select Ranked > Arena CTF > Endurance, and the solo person (referred from now on as the "point-man") does the same but alone. This ensures that it will be a 3 vs 1 match. Note that the person who is in the process of getting to the top of the learderboards must be in the party of 3!
2. There are 4 maps:
Speed Trap - It's the ideal map. Takes minimum of 14 minutes and has a pit.
Relativity - Good map, takes minimum of 16 minutes and has a pit.
Death Before Dishonor - Good map. No pit.
Heartless - Good map. No pit.
3. In the party of 3, 2 people (the ones not going for the Number One achievement) must commit suicide 100 times, making their score (not win points, SCORE!) "-100". Make sure not to kill the point-man, not capturing flags and not even touching the flags because if you get one point for anything it'll be impossible to get "-100" in that match. Just suicide and don't do anything else. Pits are ideal for this. On Speed trap it's easy to find the pit but on Relativity it will take a while to memorize its location but you'll get it eventually. If you don't have a pit you need to kill yourself with weapons that have splash damage. The best one is the Hyperblaster. Bring it on top of a Scout or Ammo Regen rune and it'll be even faster to kill yourself and when you get back the Hyperblaster will be right there again!
4. The other person in the party of 3, (the one going for the Number One achievement) must proceed to capture 9 flags from the opposing team.
5. After 9 flags captured, the point man picks up the enemy flag and brings it to his base but doesn't score it! The person going for Number One should pick up the Doubler rune (to ensure faster kills) and then starts killing the point-man while he has the flag held and scores 3 points from a single kill. The point-man respawns and picks up the flag, that should be in his base, and the Number One person kills him again for another 3 points. Repeat until the Number One person has 195 score (not win points, SCORE!). If by any reason your score doesn't reach 195, you can kill yourself to remove a point, or if it's below 195, you can kill the point-man without any flag holding for 1 point per kill.
6. Final Step, if both suiciders have "-100", the Number One person grabs the enemy flag and scores yet again making his score 201, and the glitch will concede 6030 Win Points.
7. Just to sum it up. You get 54 Points for the initial 9 flag capturing, then you need to kill the point-man 47 times, getting 141 score, plus the 54 from before, you'll reach 195. Then, you score the last flag you'll get (1+5) points for it and reach 201. If both suiciders have "-100", you'll get 6030 win points.
---
8. A small tip:
195 is a multiple of 3 (65 * 3 = 195). To see if your current score will reach the 195 mark, you need to know if it's a multiple of 3 too. For example, imagine you have a score of 117. That's a multiple of 3 (39 * 3 = 117). But 118 is not. Since you get 3 points per kill you need to guarantee your score is a multiple of 3 everytime.
To do so, make a sum of the numbers in the score and see if the result is a multiple of 3.
Example:
117 > 1+1+7 = 9 - Good! 9 is a multiple of 3.
156 > 1+5+6 = 12 - Good!
191 > 1+9+1 = 11 - Not good.
And so on...
This tip is simple math applied to video games.
If by any chance you didn't understand, just ignore it. =)

Additional info:
- You don't need the Doubler to score flags or to get points. All it does is help you kill faster since you deal over 100 damage with a single Railgun shot or rocket.
- You don't need to get 200 suicides and 201 points. You simply need to have 1 more point than the total number of suicides, so you can do 300 suicides and 301 points, or 237 suicides and 238 points. It always works and the win points you receive is 30 per suicide + 30 win points for winning the match. (Example: with 286 suicides, you should get 287 points giving you a total of 286 * 30 + 30 = 8610 win points).
- You can get extra negative points if you kill a friend, which means, you can shot your team mates with the machinegun (other weapons are not guaranteed to work) making them fall into a pit and it will say that you killed you friend getting you -1 score for that.

Wonder what happened to the old guide...oh well. This is also pretty much a staple for anyone going for #1.

Great Guide indeed : )
I think it might be important to say that the "Top Ten" Achievement tends to unlock at the same time as this one!

update : march 2012 - current leader has 1 mil 140k points.
if your looking for this achievement you will have to dedicate quite a long time to achieve this, as well as enlist the help of multiple partners.
the current leaderboard leader is not actively holding the spot in order to deny people this achievement.
thankyou by the way for contacting me, and for letting people know where we stand in our attempts to get this achievement.

Update Jan 17, 2019
I know with the LB issues, there is alot of confusion so Im writting this more so to clarify what is the best way as of now. I didnt discover the info, Iven take it from various forum posts and placed it hear in 1 nice lil spot.
Set it up as So: (3v1)
~ Arena CTF
~ Endurance
~ Ranked (obviously)
Now How ever you are planning to do thisQuad box, dual dual box, or 4 seperate ppl. The account on the losing should not be the host.
** jjaldana pointed out that with the time restraint, quad boxing is out of the picture unless you go for for:
~ 1 Capture
~ 1 Kill
~ 3 Suicides per
pretty sure you need to make sure that the acount that is being killed is not the host to do this.
To figure out who the host is start up the match, whoever gets the Quake loading screen is the host. If the "loser account" is the host, try having him restart his xbox console. This seemed to work for myself and seamonkeypowder.
Once you get the host on a proper account, we found that it stayed on that one account, cant confirm if this repeatable situation, but its hear just for your awareness.
So now you have 6 mins from the loading screen to complete your match, now since its set to endurance you will not get the required amount of flag captures, once you reach you desired points the "loser account" will quit out (thus this is why we dont want him to be the host)
Now Ill go into the Map/Point breakdown. I will update the guide with the proper map names tomorrow, during my next session, so bear with me.
Speed Trap
~ 6 captures
~ 1 Kill
~ 18 Suicides per
~ should take 4 mins and net you 930 pts
Map Heartless
~ 4 captures
~ 1 Kill
~ 12 Suicides per
Death before Dishonor
~ 3 captures
~ 1 Kill
~ 9 Suicides per
~ should take 5:30 mins and net you 540 pts
Relativity
~ 2/3 captures
~ 1 Kill
~ 6/9 Suicides per
~ should take 5:30 mins and net you 450/540 pts
* we usually ship this map so we dont know our way around
any questions or things to add let me know
Credit goes to Sabin IV, Bulletluckey, Vareer and jjaldana for the info.

These time constraints make it very hard to quad box! If you are doing the quite out method you might as well only cap one flag and get kills as kills give you more points.

are you going to update the map names?

Rank in at Number One on the overall leaderboard. Sadly, once again, the only way to get into the leaderboard is to glitch or boost. Easiest way? Glitch like I described in General Multiplayer. It should take about 7 to 8 glitch games to be number one, depending on how high the number one player currently is.
