This is pretty easy to get on the second level (by the end of the first level you should have the machine gun and full or nearly full ammo). Just go through the entire second level using only the machine gun. To help, turn off "Auto switch weapons on pickup" so you don't accidentally fire another weapon when you pick it up.

In options under game settings just turn off auto weapon switch so that you can pick up a different weapon and not screw yourself out that weapon achievement.

A level must be completed using only the Machine Gun. The easiest level to do this on is the level with the TSD's where you have two soldiers, a regular marine and a Tech accompanying you. Also, all of the single player achievements are best done on the easiest difficulty, Private.
