How to unlock the Time Lord achievement in Quantum Break - Definitive Guide

The hard achievements stacks with the casual and normal difficulty achievements, so if you beat the game on hard, you will obtain all 3 difficulty achievements at once at the end. You can replay all chapter via timeline / chapter select to obtain the hard achievement, is not needed to start a complete new playthrough. To obtain the hard achievement via timeline, you have to replay ALL chapter (chapter 1 - 5) AND as last chapter 5-3 to get your achievement.

Hard is not really hard in this game except the final boss fight. Some users have really problems here, so I have create a short video and write down my strategy. Honestly you need only the time rush + melee skill and some pistol bullets to kill the boss easily ;)

First of all, you can not damage the boss directly. First you have to clear the enemies in this area and avoid the bombs from the boss.

My strategy uses only time rush and melee skill (Hold LB + B near an enemy). Melee works only in combination with time rush and kills enemies instantly with one hit. After the cutscene run down the ramp with time rush and melee the first enemy in front of you. Get in cover and let time rush refill to 25% it can be used again. Use time vision to detect the remaining enemies and kill them all using time rush and melee. The most important thing is to avoid the red bombs on the ground from the boss. If you stay longer on a position he will throw the bombs and you will die instantly.

The best way to avoid bombs thrown at you is using time dodge (push LB short)

After you kill the first 3-4 enemies the boss switches the position and throws a giant bomb on the ground, run away as far as possible! After the bomb detonates go back and the boss becomes vulnerable, shoot him with your pistol, one shot is enough.

That was the first of two rounds. The second round starts now and more enemies arrive at the swimming pool. Once again use time rush and melee to kill all of them and the boss will start to use the giant bomb but this times he throws 3 bombs instead of one! So you have to run from one end to the other and back to avoid the explosions. If you have managed to avoid all 3 bombs you can shoot the boss again one time and the fight is over.

laugh all right. I need to play chapter 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 on hard. It will take me a long time. laugh
Zasta 360GameTV, you are all right when you wrot that. But I think you should write more specific . for exemple: "don't play only all chapter 5 mission, you need to go to timeline and choose the chapter 1 and play on hard level you must play chapter 1-1, 1-2, 1-3; 2-1 ........ until the chapter 5-3" and beat the game all on hard level". All this that I wrote here matches what you wrote "all the chapters".

anyways. Sorry for that. My english is not so perfet. cry

Is it worth playing through on easy to get all upgrades first before doing the hard mode run, or not really needed?

By Dread Reaver on 02 Sep 2022 05:37
Just play hard first. There are only one or two encounters (garage, bridge) that are marginally more difficult without fully upgraded powers.

I play only act 5-3 on hard with this gamertag, this GT is my "record GT" for my channel and there is no reason to play again the entire game on hard for the display "achievement won" ;) I finish the game on hard on my private gamertag

If I started the game on normal and completed it - can I complete the game on hard as well by changing difficulty or do I have to restart a new game from scratch?

(I think this might be a relevant solution for more people with samequestion)

I can confirm that you need to finish the final chapter on hard in order to get this, like LightningSoule said. I Had to do it twice :/ I wouldn't call it hard at all, only the heavy from the second wave creates a bit of a challenge. Leave him as last, just dodge serene's bombs and use dodge slow down in combination with a full-auto shotty to drop him to his knees.

you can't melee kill all the enemies in the final round. Some are big shotty guys - who also put up dampening fields around themselves.

I read the complete solution. While the latter part of your solution includes details on beating the final boss, the paragraph that explains how to get the achievement includes: Zasta 360GameTV said:
[it] is not needed to start a complete new playthrough but you have to play Act 5-3 as last hard chapter to obtain your achievement!
This is wrong. The fact that you now highlighted it shows that you are unaware the information is false or may not communicate it correctly.

By Epsilon Theta on 23 Apr 2016 18:53
and again you read only a part of the solution. The full message is

You can replay all chapter via timeline / chapter select to obtain the hard achievement, is not needed to start a complete new playthrough but you have to play Act 5-3 as last hard chapter to obtain your achievement!
Which part says you "play only part 5-3 to obtain the hard achievement" WHERE?......

Great guide that made this frustrating battle slightly less frustrating. Best thing I'd add is that even though it feels like you need to rush, as long as you avoid Paul's grenades you can take your time. Don't be afraid to run laps around the swimming pool to make sure you can approach from the best angle!

Wording it that way makes a lot of native speakers read that you need to replay all of the chapter 5, just like you wrote it. What you most likely mean is that you need to replay each chapter or, worded differently, all of the chapters.

Bump just to agree with Just Sweezy. Buggy achievement did not unlock immediately for me. I skipped every chance I got and once I returned to the main menu after finishing the final boss and cutscenes, force exited the game using the home button (highlight game, start button, quit), and then re-opened game. Bleep bloop. I'm sure it'll still unlock eventually maybe background if you play other games but I wanted to make sure this popped before moving on with my life. Thanks!

Don't know if this will help anyone but on the boss fight, second stage after you shoot Paul throw some time stop towards the pool entrance and fill with bullets as the doors open. This reliably (for me) took out the heavy even with his time field. You can then throw a time explosion to the door on the right taking out another three. I was struggling until I find this method.

not so difficult if you simply keep moving at all times. never stop, never turn around. If you're trying to shoot someone and miss on your first try, just make another loop around the pool. Don't try to turn around and shoot them, there will be a bomb waiting for you. KEEP RUNNING

By Dr Marty on 10 Jan 2020 00:52
Will echo the sentiment, KEEP RUNNING. Don't stop, just keep running in circles. One guy left and hes almost finished? Run another lap and get him next time. Also, I agree with most of the video guides you will find - it is good to camp that front door on the second wave, hit them quick and then start your laps. If you don't, there may be a crowd of 6 guys there when you lap around, which spells trouble. Took me 30ish times even with guides and youtube vids. Good luck and keep running.

Just finished a hard playthrough. Took about 3 hours with skipping as many cutscenes as possible.

If you played on a lower difficulty, you can just use the same save file. Just use the Timeline and replay them all on Hard. You will be able to play through Hard with all of your ability upgrades.

Popped right after the final encounter.

I tried it, after the first playthrough on normal difficulty, I played the last chapter und hard. Didn't popped. Then i played every single part on hard again. I thought it would pop at the end of 5-2, but it didn't... I think it's important that you have to play the final chapter on hard at the very end... shit... I don't want to fight Serene on hard again xD

[...]to obtain the hard achievement, is not needed to start a complete new playthrough. To obtain the hard achievement via timeline, you have to replay ALL chapter AND as last chapter 5-3 to get your achievement.
As stated multiple times already, yes it does!

You clearly state that you need no complete new playthrough and that you should replay all of the chapter 5, with 5-3 needing to be the last. This is wrong! You need to replay all chapters!

Worked great for me, though you can't rush and melee kill the heavy trooper in the second wave as the text guide suggests. Either need a few carbine headshots or get behind and shoot his back as per the video. This achievement popped along with all the other endgame ones as the final cutscene starts when you activate the countermeasure.

Not only is this one extremely unbalanced, amateurish, and cheesy... They seemed to have updated the difficulty from your video. In phase 1, I have 5 enemy to kill and his invisi-death balls seem to be more abusive. You only had 3, and plenty of time to idle in corners. They seemed to have really threw a wrench in this boss fight. These death balls ( not the explosions ) are what makes this a travesty by this development team. If you make a game hard, it needs to be on a scale and linear. Don't throw in 100 deaths at the end to make comeuppance for lack of ai balance.
This dev team just threw in a bunch of Insta kill death balls and increased the difficulty of final boss battle tenfold. It really is amateurish on the devs to do that. Replace AI with cheap gimmicks to kill you.

I think they even made it harder after a patch for sure.

For anyone still having trouble with the last boss after the tips using powers and guns you can try what I did. I couldn't beat it with powers and guns since every time i slowed down to shoot or use a power I got hit by a bomb the next second, so I thought I'd do laps around the outside and see how long I live for (I really don't know why) and after 4 or 5 laps I guess the enemies following me all died from the bombs and I just had to run away from the big bomb and shoot him, happened for both rounds and I didn't even get hit by a bullet. Maybe I got lucky but good luck to you.

Running around in circles seemed to work better than anything. Definitely don't try to hide. Just keep swimming, taking potshots at people, doing the time rush melee only if someone is nearby, and eventually you'll be successful.

Knowing the last fight was the hardest, I started there and used this method. It worked perfectly (twice actually - the first time the second of three bombs at the end trapped me). I continued to run laps even when the big guy was left and eventually he got killed too (it took quite a long time, but the time I tried to go after him I got killed by a bomb). I forget what the skill is called, but I used LB and B a lot throughout my laps. Without this solution, I'd have had no hope of completing this game... now I just have the rest of the acts left to complete on hard, but I know most of those will be doable in 1-2 tries. Thanks for posting this solution - it should be the highest ranked one as far as I'm concerned.

Edited to add: I played all the other acts on hard and the achievement didn't pop. I ended up having to play the last fight all over again. I used the same strategy and finished it on the first try and then achievement popped. Thanks again!

I couldn't get it to work for me but running in circles does help. Here's what I did: run around in circles, then if they were close enough in front of me, I'd pull out my shotty and shoot them without aiming if I could. I only had it pulled out for like half a second. Then when I got to the juggernaut I ran past him, shot him in the back with my shotgun, time dashed away, circled back, and repeated the process until he was dead on the next attempt.

For people asking if they should start with hard difficulty on their first playthrough - Yes go for it. I finished the game on hard and I can confirm that it's one of those "hard" difficulties, it's easy and not that challenging if you make use of your abilities. You can always lower it down to normal if it's too much.

I tried just finishing Act 5 on Hard to see if it would pop, sadly it didn't and you have to see the game to the very end to pop the achievement (despite the menu saying it has been finished on Hard).

Hey use all the guides you can on this and put your own technique into it for me just kept running around the pool and shooting and time dodging the monarchs that come in, there is also grenade things Paul will throw to drain your upgrades just keep dodging dont ever stop that makes you an easy target eventually you will take them all out and Paul will put a big red grenade thing out get away from it as quick as possible opposite side of the pool you are at, Paul will then be at his weakest shoot him once and after that a second wave of monarchs will come from front door and a door to the right do exact same thing run around the pool keep dodging and shooting take out all Monarchs dont stop moving! Once you take them all out Paul will throw 3 red bombs again right next to you move to opposite side of pool let that explode he will throw another next to you run to other side of pool let it explode finally he throws the last one next to you run to the opposite side again let it explode go to where he is shoot him and mission accomplished.

Also use your Time Vision when running around the pool to keep an eye on the Monarch Agents reason being is Pauls bombs can kill the agents so he could put out one of those big bombs and kill you when you thought there was still Monarchs there can be frustrating took me 4 attempts to do this 1 attempt when using this method...... Good luck

When first starting the game, I recommend going on Hard difficulty as the game is not that difficult to beat even with stock Jack. But if you do find yourself intimidated by it, here are a few tips to get by with hardly no trouble.

Set Aim Assist to "FULL" (under GAMEPLAY) as you can line someone up and you can snap-aim them for good hits.

Make use of Time Vision () as it will show you on the locations of the enemy for you to map out your plan of assault.

When going up against Monarch heavies (light machine gun, shotgun and grenade launchers), using Time Dodge and Time Rush is key as they move closer to you, they can destroy your cover. If that being the case, use Time Shield and Time Dodge or Rush out of there. Some heavies require you to shoot them in the back. Don't press your luck; once your Time powers fade, they can turn around and obliterate you.

Avoid the sniper laser sight at all costs as it will instantly kill you.

Avoid hiding behind breakable cover unless your health is in the red.

When going up against Paul Serene in the final Act and he is exploding with rage, Time Rush to the opposite end in the area to avoid his blast radius while you avoid his heavies and Chronon harness-wearing soldiers. His explosions will instantly kill you. If you stay in one spot long enough, Paul will unleash his Time powers at you. Once he has exhausted his powers, this will be your time to unload on him.

I played through the game twice. First time at the intermediate level with all the collections, leveling, etc. You don't have to start a new game. The second time, you start in the “Time Line” menu from the first level, setting the difficulty level to hard. At the same time, all leveling of abilities remains in place. The only headache will be the snipers, they sometimes one-shot. If you figured out the mechanics of the last boss during your first playthrough, then there should be no problems. The only time I felt nervous about the boss was on my first playthrough.

I played through the game 2 times, on the hard level it was hard from the very beginning because my abilities weren’t leveled up. I didn’t level up a single ability the entire game and it was difficult, but I got through it.

I immediately played on “Hard” and if you beat the game on “Hard” difficulty, achievements will be given for all difficulties.
Playing on the Hard level is actually very easy. I didn't see any difference at all. Unless it's the final boss, and that's only because all the mechanics are unknown throughout the entire battle.
