How to unlock the Cleared Without Using Continues achievement in Radiant Silvergun - Definitive Guide

Set up your Arcade mode options as follows to make it a little easier:
* 10 lives
* Extend every 1,000,000
* Difficulty on Very Easy
Thank you Cpt Obvious!

* Picking the stage 2-x route seemed easier than 4-x.

* Ikaruga scoring mode = allows you to chain different colors.
For example, destroy 3 red ennemies then 3 yellow ones and the chain will still keep going... but will max out at 25,600 pts rather than 100,000.
This will help you survive because you'll have less ennemies to dodge, and you'll get longer chains without learning the levels by heart.
Thanks deexor for this advice!
PLEASE NOTE That Ikaruga mode is available only if you have one or more achievement for Ikaruga on your gamertag (sorry for not pointing this out earlier)

If you want to have a chance, you'll still need to do some learning though.
Learn the 5 first levels (3-x): how to survive, chain, and 100% destroy the bosses. In Ikaruga mode it's relatively easy to get a good score.
You don't have to be able to perfect them every time, but the better you get on those the easier the rest will be! Remember: good score = good weapons = easier bosses!

For stages 2-x and 5 I didn't get any particular training other than my Story mode run... Just try to survive and keep a few lives for the end.

Now for stage 6: Xiga
BE ATTITUDE FOR GAINS.
1. BE PRAYING..
2. BE PRAYING..
3. BE PRAYING..
Seriously, you'll have to get some training on this.
If you die here, try to note what level your weapons are when you get there and reproduce it in training mode. Learning the patterns is key!
One attack, however, is totally random: the part where Xiga is rolling in the air and shooting green lasers all over the place. And that's why you really need to have a few lives in stock.

Also, learn the patterns of the last stage (1). They are easy and you just don't want to be surprised and die there after you finally beat Xiga without using continues!

I'm not particularly good at this, and on my first 1CC run at the beginning of stage 6 I had:
5 lives = got 5 extends... lost 10 lives on my way, 4 of them on stage 5.
Levels V19 H16 S20 = using H+S during all the battle except for the last attack (falling diamonds) where I used V. With this, I barely saw any of the alternate patterns Xiga can use. I still had to dodge quite a few green lasers of death though.

So there's plenty of room for improvement (obviously), and yet plenty of room for more errors!
And when in doubt, remember your "Be attitude for gains"..

Can you explain the Ikaruga scoring mode tip in more detail? How does it make it easier? Because it's easier to get more points and power up your weapons more?

^It's like he said, you'll have an easier time because you won't be constantly dodging the ships that aren't the colour of your chain. In Ikaruga mode, you can destroy 3 Red then 3 Blue, and so on, as opposed to the Original mode where you're focusing on a single colour all the time. Obviously this only matters if you're planning on getting a couple extra lives for the 1CC.
You could always simply hold A and shoot everything in sight, aiming only to survive. Though I wouldn't really recommend that lol.

@Black Mesa... so in Ikaruga mode all that matters is doing everything in threes, but in the original mode it's a continuous concentration on one color where you shouldn't kill anything else? Seem so weird.

It's actually quite simple, let me put it differently.
Original Mode, has your chain max out at 100,000pts. You'll get more points here, but it'll be harder because you'll only be focusing on one colour at all times.
Ikaruga Mode, has your chain max out at 25,600pts. Here you'll get less points, but it will be easier because you will be doing everything in three's, like you said.
So in a nutshell: Original Mode = Harder Chains, but more points. Ikaruga Mode = Easier Chains, but less points.

Now that I've been playing it (a lot), I totally get it. Thank you for this explanation too!

You know, you should probably add the fact that you can only play in Ikaruga mode if you've unlocked at least one achievement in Ikaruga on the gamertag you're using. I didn't know this, so now I guess I'm gonna have to buy that game too in order to have any chance of getting this achievement :/

@RazorPriest, I did not know that! Wow that's pretty cool! But I would disagree with your not having "any chance" of getting the achievement without Ikaruga mode. I don't think it makes a huge difference. You'll get more points. (How many more? I don't know.) But the achievement is still doable. I'm about to do this myself...
