Clear level 1 using only the Sword
First and foremost, you CAN change settings to make this achievement even easier. Choose Single Player > Arcade Mode > Normal Play. Now you will have a few options that you can alter. Change the difficulty to Very Easy, start with 10 ships, and extension every 1,000,000. You can even run out of lives and use continues.
The description of this achievement is actually a little misleading since you start the game on Stage 3A but in reality, this is really Level 1. Make sure the only weapon you use is your RT button attack which is your sword. If you press any other weapon button, you will invalidate this achievement. There are 5 parts to Level 1 and they are: 3A, 3B, 3C, 3D, and 3E. The achievement will unlock upon completing 3E.

Additionally, it's worth pointing out that whacking the pink projectiles with the sword charges up a "hyper sword" attack. I struggled with a few of the bosses until I figured that out.

There is one real easy way to get this achievement.
From the main menu stats page, you can see how much time you have played arcade/story. Once the play time for arcade reaches 7 hours, you will have unlimited credits.
With unlimited credits just go through level 1 and just mash the RT. Once you beat the boss on 3E, you unlock the achievement.
