How to unlock the Heavy Boots achievement in RAGE 2 - Definitive Guide

This is a permadeath mode - once you die, you start back from the beginning of the game. You can however use the defibrillator, and you can quit to the main menu if you feel like you're about to die - going back into Iron Man Mode from the main menu will return you to either the closest discovered Trade Town if you were in free roam, or the last checkpoint if you quit out during a mission.

This is not an NG+ mode, so you are better off doing this on Easy difficulty, unless you are going for one of the other difficulty achievements from this Title Update (absolutely not recommended!) You will pick up the Assault Rifle and Shotgun along the way as part of the main story - between those and the grenades you won't need anything else if you're playing on Easy.

You can pick up the defibrillator in the 'Canyon Cove' Ark in the south eastern part of Broken Tract, which is likely the second ark you will come across. I never needed to use the defibrillator but used Health Infusions many times. You may want to pick up 1-2 Health Infusion Upgrades (1 is found in each Trade Town, and the trader you will encounter on the roads also has one) and pick up the upgrades in Kvasir's upgrade tree which let you hold 6 (or 8 if you upgrade twice) infusions in your inventory.

You need to get Marshall, Loosum and Kvasir to Level 5 in their respective projects to finish the game. Kvasir will likely happen naturally as you move through the map and come across data pads and any other icons with blue labels (such as fallen rangers.) Loosum requires you to complete orange locations, such as Automated Sentries, Gas Stations and Road Chokers. Marshall requires you to complete pink locations, which are mostly bandit dens. Level 5 for each person is 500 points, so you can pick harder targets for Marshall & Loosum to get to 500 with fewer locations that need to be explored.

In the final mission you will be driving a tank through what is basically an auto-scroller, even on Easy you will be shot a lot, and dying in the tank gives you no defibrillator option. If your tank gets to half health, quit out and load the Iron Man Mode back up, where you'll be back in the tank at the previous checkpoint at full health, so you can try again. Targets in this long series of corridors (tanks, enemies, flammable barrels) spawn from fairly far away so you can shoot enemies from a distance to stay safe.

Be careful when in free roam. At one point, driving (or falling by foot) off a cliff is an instant death. As of 2021 it appears that if you do fall off a cliff, you are taken back to a previous checkpoint and you don't die or lose your save.

A fast run through this game mode without unnecessary exploration can be done in 5-6 hours. The achievement will pop after the credits are a brief cut scene with the major characters in the game.

(H/T to Scotty x360a for some details provided in this solution, and Mack Stardust for the updated status of the risks driving/falling off cliffs.)

If you do this as your first playthrough, can you jump into ng+ on ultra nightmare and turn off ironman?

@SallyNasty IronMan is a special save (i.e. on the Load Game screen, you'll see Slot #1, Slot #2, etc - but this mode's save says IronMan). I don't think you can do what you're wanting - I can try to take a look after I finish my Ultra Nightmare run.

Just want to add that if you power off your Xbox without exiting the game, you can lose your Ironman auto save. Happened to me during a sudden power outage.

Wonder if cloud-saving manipulation works. Tempted to test it at an early part of the game.

@NoHeroes94 this run isn't that hard, so I don't think any level of save manipulation is really needed.

Just got the cheev. Thanks a ton for the tip about restarting checkpoint in the paper tank. That was the closest I came to wiping on the run. Otherwise was pretty easy(but boring to have to play a third time). Thumbs up!

By the way, there are several progression-halting bugs in this game where the next mission or step in a mission will just not trigger at all.

So it might be a good idea to play this offline and sync on occasion, so you can restore from a previous save from the cloud and at least not need to start over from the beginning due to a bricked save.

question, if u do ironman mode first, can u create a ng+ from it as a normal save or is it totally separate?

By Markyshizzle on 21 Jan 2020 07:59
@Markyshizzle totally separate, it's a NG start only.

(Btw, I used your Max Payne 3 Shadows Rushed Me guide a few years ago - thanks for that!)

That's not entirely true, I've noticed that when the game has crashed, it has left an autosave from my Ironman run as the "latest autosave". And if continuing from that save, Ironman is turned off.

It might be possible to reach a similar result by force-closing the game, opening up an autosave (if one now exists), and then continuing that game as a "regular" save. This is more of a bug than an intended feature though.

Just a heads up to anyone going for this. As of feb 2020, there are still game breaking bugs to deal with. I got stuck on my very last mission, Beneath the Surface. l grabbed the fission core, but I guess it didn’t register. I took the lift up and it said I still needed to grab it. But it wouldn’t let me take the lift back down no matter what I tried. It was literally the last thing I had to do before the end. I lost 6 hours of gameplay. I recommend any time you have a main story mission, wait for the next objective to update before pushing on. If it glitches out, hard quit the game and reload the autosave.

So I nearly failed this right off the bat because I forgot you can barely fall 30 feet without eating dirt. Managed to dashboard out during my death throes and all was fine. But then my game crashed near the end of the story while it was autosaving and I got the same glitch as WhyattThrash. LAME. I was playing casually before, but it's Speedrun time, I guess.

Can anyone confirm if there is anything you can check to see that you are playing in ironman mode? I selected Ironman mode to start and saved my game at some point. I always hit continue to resume, but think that the save messed me up because the achievement didn't pop when I finished the last mission. angry

Just a suggested change: driving off a cliff or otherwise falling to your death is NOT an instant death. You will simply be sent back to the nearest trade town/location/checkpoint.

I just beat Ironman mode last night and wanted to test this out, both falling to my death on foot and in a vehicle sent me back to a checkpoint, but running into a bandit den and getting killed deleted my save. Also tested it out on a new Ironman playthrough, drove/jumped off a cliff a few times and everything was good. I haven’t tested this on stuff like the final boss or Authority bases with endless floors/killbarriers, but if you drive your Phoenix off a cliff, you’ll be fine.

I was actually re-reading my solution a few days ago and recalled that when I played that it was instant death. Perhaps it's been patched? In any case I will reword. Thanks for your suggestions.

When all 3 missions are done and you are heading to the base to fight general Cross, do not drive off the cliff, leave the map or reload in any way as it might cause the game breaking bug where the marker disappears and you are told to continue working with your allies to continue.

That's stupid. It's iron man. How you die is irrelevant. You die sits game over. I hate such modes, but ffs be consistent. It's like pussy permadeath mode from TloUII where you have checkpoints.
Pfffff...

By on 22 Aug 2021 17:26
I'm not sure if you meant my comment was stupid, but here you go.
I know it's permadeath. But they patched out dying from falling off the cliff. Still, if the game reloads because of that (or in my case, taking a shortcut was considered leaving the map - when I tried to turn around it respawned me back on the road) you can get glitched out of the achievement. This is a bug which is there in the other game modes as well, but it's not that annoying as you can just reload your save.
Anyway, reading your previous comments, you need to tune down and work on your anger management.

Went through my first game and NG+ Ultra Nightmare without a single glitch. Started my no death run and got to the last mission of the 3 before the final boss and the quest glitched telling me to Find the Fission core after I picked it up and now I can't progress the story. Pretty much an entire run through the game for nothing because I can't load a prior save.

Thanks to sjpsjpsjp for their guide - definitely helped me. I want to share a couple of tips to hopefully prevent someone from wasting a whole play-through like I did. Do not save your game at any point once you start this and until you complete it. It's fine, and potentially necessary, to quit the game and select continue. It's key, though, that you see the flaming heart icon next to Continue Game as in the screenshot below.

External image

If you don't see this, go to your saved games and look for an autosave that says "Ironman" next to it. If you don't see the flaming heart icon and you don't have an "Ironman" autosave you should start over because you're no longer in Ironman mode.

While playing, you should see a flaming heart icon in the bottom-left corner of the screen denoting that you're in Ironman mode as in the screenshot below.

External image

Also good to note that you do not have to do the Sandworm or Mech Retrieval missions during your Ironman playthrough.

You cannot save in this game mode, you skip Save in the menus.

To unlock this achievement you need to complete the game in Iron Man Mode. You have to choose this game mode from the main menu and it is a separate option from normal new game modes. You cannot save the game in this mode and if you die, your save will automatically be deleted and you will need to start the game again from the very beginning.

However, fret not as this can be done on the Easy difficulty. You can complete this game, simply going for this achievement, in around 10 hours, even less, however I would recommend spending some time at least getting some useful skills and weapons to help you along. It is very highly recommended to get the 'Defibrillation' skill that can be found at the Canyon Cove Ark in Broken Tract:

Acquiring this will give you a second chance should you accidentally get yourself killed. However this only relates to combat; if you die in a vehicle, either from it being destroyed or by driving over a ledge into an unplayable area, you will die immediately and ruin your run.

As with Ultra Nightmare, make use of the Health Infusion and don't be afraid to use them as you can always get more of them and the ingredients to make them from the same vendor in Gunbarrel. Also put your Feltrite into upgrading your Constitution from the upgrades menu as this can reduce damage from bullets and explosions. You can also have your health upgraded in Wellspring but the ingredients you need to do so are somewhat difficult to come by and you only get 5 more health per upgrade, so it's not entirely worth the effort.

It is worth noting that you cannot save the game, however you can exit to the main menu which will put you at the nearest discovered location or last checkpoint when you load the game back up, so you don't have to do this in a single sitting. This too is a viable option, when you load it back up at a checkpoint you will have full health, so for example on the final mission when driving the Xerxes tank that has a tendency to be easily destroyed and the potential to ruin your run, when your tanks health starts to get low, exit the game, then load it back up and you will be at the latest checkpoint and all your health will be back, giving you a better chance to progress. Don't be afraid to abuse this should you see fit.

Also it is finally worth noting that you cannot start a concurrent playthrough of this game while attempting this game mode. Since you cannot save it, the only way to return to it after quitting out is via 'Continue' on the main menu. If you load up another save file, then save the game or trigger an auto-save, your current Iron Man Mode will be overwritten and you would need to start it again, so when you choose to go for this achievement, don't play any other aspect of the game until it is done.

This can be done on Easy but if you die, all your saves will be erased so make frequent backups! Luckily the campaign is very short and can be done in around 5 hours so if you do mess up, it's not the worst thing in the world.

Tips:

- The game autosaves which can be reloaded so no need to worry about crashes or playing the game non stop.

- Falling into the trenches does not kill you, it just respawns you nearby.

- Ironman must be played on an entirely new save file

- Be careful driving non phoenix vehicles if they explode you're back to square one. Phoenix does not explode when damaged.

- There are a few glitches still so be careful and upload your save to the PS Save File Cloud or a USB Drive on a frequent basis.

In this mode, if you are killed, then everything starts all over again.
But there are two tricks:
The difficulty level can be reduced to minimum.
You can backup to a flash drive or PS+ cloud.
As a result, there should be no problems with this trophy.

Attention !

Before turning in the last quest for Marshal/Luzam/Kvasir, after which you will attack the government, make a backup copy of your save! Precisely before submitting the quest, otherwise if you make a backup copy after submitting the quest, but before starting an attack on the government, you may experience a bug when the task does not appear and you will have to redo it all over again (as happened to me).

Nothing complicated. Set the difficulty to easy and move on to the main quests. There are few main tasks in the game and everything can be completed in 2-3 hours. By the way, you don’t have to complete the entire game at once - you can go to the menu! If you accidentally fall into a cliff, this does NOT count as death and the game will load from the nearest checkpoint. The main thing is not to crash on the ground - in this case it is considered as death. I also advise you to take defibrillation in one of the nearest arks, just in case, so you will also have the right to make a mistake. If you suddenly die, quickly go to the menu.
