How to unlock the Just a Flesh Wound achievement in RAGE - Definitive Guide

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/showthread.php?p=45... (this is the work pwningyoursoul)

Rounds 1-4 are always the same and follow standard European Knife Game rules.

Round 5 however is randomized each time and unless you are Max Payne it will be too fast and complex for you to get in three tries. Counteract this by putting your left thumb on the start button and pressing start and A almost simultaneously (A needs to come slightly before start for this to work) so you can see where the next place you'll have to stab is.

I tried to do this for 3 straight hours before looking for help, for your own mental health please please please do the above before anything else. (though this method does make this possible it more than quadruples the time it takes to finish the round and still demands all of your concentration)

Some advice which a friend gave me....practice this method on the first four rounds instead of just trying to jump right in on round five. I found after doing it so much that I had the timing memorized for the first four that doing this really screwed me up, till I practiced it a bit.

thanks, finally got it after many attempts....but I must say for all the agravation the TA score of 46 is pretty low. that was a lot harder and took alot of time. just my opinion.( I tried the method above and couldn't get the timing right, ended up just doing it the lefit way which makes the 46 points feel even lower than it should)

I gave up on his. I think your tv plays a role in this to. My Sony lcd has always had a little lag with guitar hero. So, what I see on the screen is in fact a little slower. I had not problem with 1st 3 rounds. Round four, I can not get past the middle, pinkie, ring, pinkie combo.

somehow even using the pause technique i can't manage this. I get like 10 correct stabs then i fail when it groups them nr 3,4,3,4,3,5,3,4,3 they are so close together that with the pause its not even do-able.. jeez

HOW does anyone press A twice fast enough to nail two hits next to each other? This knackers me every time. I hit A/pause... see the section next to the one I've just hit is lit up... press A to un-pause... press A/pause straight away... and bang; finger every bloody time.

Great guide tried it normally and I'd end up messing up towards the end. Tried this method did it first try with no failures. Idk why people are bitching like using this method makes it easy enough for a kid to do it. It's your lack of skill if you can't do it using this method, not the developer or the creator of the solution or the company that makes your tv or anything else, just you.

Pause method is for sure the way to go to avoid frustration, all in all it took me about 15-20 mins. so I'm not to miserable!

For me I had trouble with the pause method when two hits were next to each other seems I always missed it, but as long as you hit start RIGHT after you hit A you should have enough reaction time even if its right next to where you just hit.

First off, I have never had such a frustrating time trying to get an achievement as lame as this. After a long and tedious hour or so, I figured out the timing that goes along with this strategy. The thing I had the most trouble with on round 5 was when the stabs were right next to one another. What I did to get past this, is watch the Red dot, and focus on it when you come out of the pause menu. This seemed to help my odds out immensely, and helped to prevent any pre mature stabbing...lol. JUST KEEP WITH IT, and you WILL get this achievment.

Also, being frustrated does nothing for me, except causing me to have to buy a new controller. That being said, if you get frustrated, just walk away and get your mind off it, then come back to it later. GOOD LUCK!

Not working for me.. my tv has a slight bit of lag, when it's close together, the knife jumps after pausing and I simply can't press a + start fast enough, it'll hit the finger... I complete games, but this one. I'm at a loss of words on how stupid it is.

Achievements like this are making me write off game completions as not worth it anymore... I don't see the point in doing something ridiculous like this when I could be enjoying a FPS or strategy game.. with a bit of lag on my tv, it makes this impossible, pause method or not unfortunately. I'll complete reasonable games.

This solution is probably the best way for those still working on this game. I used a wired controller on an lcd screen with low latency to minimize the issues with lag. The wired controller I used had the start button below the left stick which made it more comfortable to hold than a standard wireless controller. I had more issues with stage 4 than 5. Got it on my third try.

For the times the game had me moving from one finger to the very next I would hit A+start like a half second after unpausing the game. Waiting more or going to fast after pausing caused me to fail. The 1/2 second method worked perfectly for me. And turning off the sound as well.

Thanks for posting this solution!!!

Oh man, and here I thought waiting for that 3% chance on Tombstones was frustrating. Pause method works well, but this still takes a lot of concentration and a lot of luck. If you get four or more hits next to each other it's almost impossible to pause and unpause fast enough...

Honestly can't thank you all enough for these tips, and wired controller is the way to go. You've really got to hit that A/Start combo as fast as humanly possible, and un pause with B. If you have a smaller screen to do this on (or 'picture in picture' on your big-arse TV) it really helps to keep track of the red dot. Machos gracias!

This is retarded. I did not buy this game for $40 to stare at my character's left hand for two hours. Minigames are bullshit, trash them all and put that effort into the campaign where it belongs.

Every third or fourth pause took between 15 and 25 seconds for the menu to come up, and it really fucked up my timing trying this method. It worked in the end, though, which is much much better than the alternative.

Great solution!

If you're pressing Start and the game has registered that you pressed A then you should be paused before he has even stabbed the knife down, and because it's registered that you pressed A the next target has already lit up. This should leave you just enough time to do the next A->Start combo.

Just wanted to say this solution worked for me as well... my second time doing it though. I hit start a little too quickly and of course it paused but didnt register the A and I lost a try. I didnt think I would be able to get this one though even with help, but as long as you are able to easily get to round 5(took me some time) then you can get this achievement with minimal difficulty using this

I want to thank DesperadoRobert the other guys here who posted this solution. I pride myself on getting achievements honestly and fairly and usually walk away if I cant get them after a couple of hours. However after 3 hours I ready for the mental breakdown that DesperadoRobert spoke about. I carfefully read his solution and then went to a visual aid on youtube. This achievement is doable in about 10 mins if you get the first 4 down cold. I blew past them in less than 5 minutes then using Desperado's advice and some youtube video help I got this cheevy in 5 more mins. If your wondering why I wanted it so bad...well I am Private Hudson from aliens and bishop isnt going to get that knife game over on me, LOL. Thanks to the guy who posted this on youtube and and here is his link if your interested...

Thank you for the vid! I was trying the pause method, but the unpausing was throwing off my rythme, and I'd get stuck on either the next move or the one after. But it wasn't until after I saw the vid that I noticed that my Start+A timing was off, as I wasn't getting the next button highlighted before the knife hit down! After I saw that, I got it on my second attempt :)

To start, I would like to point out that this achievement is why this game is called "RAGE." It took me probably a total of one to one and a half hours of playing five fingered fillet to beat this. Your success is based on your strategy, concentration, reflexes, and a little bit of luck.

Rounds 1-4 are always the same. If you spend maybe 10-15 minutes playing this minigame, you should be able to breeze through these rounds with very little difficulty.

Round 5 is completely random and requires a great deal of skill to really get through in only a handful of tries. There are some people who are suggesting to use a method that involves pressing A immediately following opening the menu by pressing START. By doing this, you should be able to see the next spot you will be hitting light up as the menu opens. This, in my opinion, is a bad strategy to use for all three strikes; it will throw off your timing and ultimately result in pressing A too early or too late, especially if the next stab is right next you your previous one.

Here is my strategy for Round 5:

BEFORE YOU START: you should note where you are looking after every hit. You will always start with a hit behind the thumb, but you should always be looking at the spot immediately after the one you just hit. Since this is random, you will never know when you will be hitting the spot right next to your previous hit. For example, if you are moving left and hit the spot after the pinky, you should be looking at the spot to its right, in preparation for a close hit. It is also important to note (for this example) that you will once again be hitting the spot to the left of the pinky again, as you will always be alternating direction after a hit.

Strike 1: Use the pausing method to get a feel for the round. For me this only earned me the first 4-5 hits before my timing got thrown off. By doing this, you are essentially trying to know what to expect as you go the second strike.

Strike 2: Based on you performance in strike 1, you can either do the pausing method again, this time starting from around the place where you left off, or you can continue without it (if you feel you got enough of a feel for the round to get through most of what's left). If you are using the pausing method, the method is the same: try to keep your timing down and pay attention to what places you are hitting.

Strike 3: After failing twice, you haven't accomplished nothing. You should have a pretty good idea of what to expect for this final strike. Part of this is luck, but most of it is what you learn in your previous strikes. If all goes well, congratulations! If not, you can always try again using my strategy. If you feel like it's not working for you, you can always modify what I've suggested or try someone else's idea. Good luck, and don't get too frustrated if it's taking a long time.

I'm open to any suggestions in the comments below. If you feel I should change anything, I can add any new ideas to the solution and accredit any contributors.

This was by far and away the best tip for beating it. The start trick only screwed me up and made it harder. After nailing the first 4 multiple times and training my eyes to look on either side of the spot I just stabbed first, I was able to get this in about half an hour and it felt great. I also found it helped to count the stabs. For round 5, there were 32 stabs to pass the round. This helped me know when I was getting close. Hopefully this helps someone else.

First of all this is not a easy achievement, you need patience practice and timing!
The first three rounds are similar then the fourth changes slightly and the fifth is random but you have your three chances each round to memorize get through and hopefully pop this achievement!
As I said this is not a quick achievement to get, it will take time and patience! Once you get use to the rhythm and the timing of each round, you will soon be going through the first four with hardly any or no strikes! Then there is the random fifth round, I did not use the pause technique even though I know it has helped a lot of people get this achievement and works for most people and is a good solution!
If you are like me, the slightest thing can put you off and you make a mistake get frustrated and quit the game but this is what I did!
I turned notifications off, turned the sound off, all had gone to bed in the house so I was on my own with no distractions and could concentrate! When you are just going off visual your reaction time should speed up and with your timing and practice of the first four rounds and knowing when to hit the A button you should be able to pull this off after a hour or so! After the first hour I was only making mistakes on the final round and then with my reaction time increased thanks to playing it by visual only and my timing I got to the end of the game, didn't see the achievement pop of course but knew I had done it!
Hope this helps a few people to get this one done, happy gaming!

I'm sure everyone has seen the cheat for this by now, but i will explain it in some detail which isn't exactly obvious in the videos.

So I'm sure most of us can pass at least round 3, this cheat works on any of the rounds however and makes round 4 pretty easy as well.

So the cheat works like this:

Get yourself ready by having one of your thumbs on the START button and the other thumb on the X button.

In any round including round 5, the first space that you need to hit is behind the thumb, which is the lowest one on the right.
As soon as you are in this space hit START and X at EXACTLY THE SAME TIME.
You should now be able to see what the next space you need to hit will be, so when you are ready hit X again to resume the game, and when you are in the next space HIT START AND X AT EXACTLY THE SAME TIME AGAIN.
You should see the next space again so just rinse and repeat this START and X combination until the misery is over. If the next space is directly next to the one you just hit you need to hit the buttons fairly quickly, but round 5 is actually a bit slower than round 4.

The videos don't really make it clear that you need to hit the two buttons at exactly the same time, and then unpause the game. It helps an awful lot to have your thumbs on the Start and X buttons because you really do need to press them simultaneously, it can take a bit of practice to get the hang of it but i could never get the cheat to work until i figured this out and as soon as i did, i got the damn thing on the 2nd try.

Hope this helps.

Unlike Tombstone, 5 Finger Filet is pure skill game, where you have to place your hand on a table, palm down, with your fingers spread out while stabbing the area in between your fingers with a sharp knife. The areas you must hit are highlighted on the table as the knife automatically pans over your hand - press the button shown on screen to stab the table at the right time as the knife hovers over the target area. Quick reflexes and pattern recognition are a must if you hope to succeed at this. Note: Round 1-4 is scripted to be the same every time. Round 5, however, is not, which makes it a much more challenging challenge to complete. Good luck!

For a detailed guide, check out this link. Credit goes to pwningyoursoul.

One of the hardest trophies in the game, you may have already know of 5 finger fillet as you can play it in Red Dead Redemption. For those of you who don't know, 5 finger fillet is played by putting your hand face down on the table and spreading your fingers apart. You then stab in between your fingers in an arc, example: I start on the left hand side of my little finger, work my way across to the thumb and then come back again. To play this game you must enter the bar in Wellsprings and talk to the man sitting at the table with the knife, he will only appear once you have completed a few main missions for wellsprings. To unlock this trophy you will have to complete the hardest round, round 5. All rounds before this are easy but the last one is just crazy. This round has no pattern and it's entirely random unlike the other rounds which had a pattern. The best advice is to practice, practice and practice some more. Once you've gotten the hang of five finger fillet you should be able to complete the final round, be prepared for a few hours of this. Powerpyx has made a video showing a perfect way how to get the trophy easily if your having trouble doing it normally:
