How to unlock the Night Terrors achievement in RAGE - Definitive Guide

As has been said, this isn't overly more difficult than the original hardest difficulty, Nightmare.

A few tips, really, are all you need to succeed, as the game does a good job of helping you along.

-Stay in cover and try to shoot enemies through gaps in that covering (pipes, cracks in the wall, etc.)

-Go for headshots when you can, to conserve ammunition and make the enemies go down faster.

-As far as what weapons to use, I found the Fists of Rage (extra from the Anarchy edition, thanks to bytyqi for bringing it up!) to be helpful in conserving ammo at the beginning of the game, especially against the Mutants who don't shoot at you.
-I also really liked using the assault rifle (with feltrite rounds) and the authority MG (with AV2X rounds). I found that the regular ammunition wasn't even close in comparison to the effectiveness of the feltrite and AV2X rounds, especially towards the end of the game.
-The nailgun is also hugely helpful (thanks MCoreBE for bringing it up!), as the rebar rounds will kill most enemies with one hit, and the railgun slugs can shoot through walls and kill multiple enemies with one shot. However, it will require you to play through the first mission of the Scorchers DLC, which is not required for this achievement.
-Cerichsen also recommends using the Fat Momma ammunition (it will require you to obtain the schematic) for the Pistol and the Pop Rockets for the Shotgun, as well as keeping a few Sentry Bots around when things get sticky. (I preferred to sell everything I didn't absolutely need and it helped me stay stocked up on good ammunition, but you'll have to find out what works best for you).
-(Any of the special ammunition is extremely helpful)

-Try to keep a healthy supply of bandages and don't be stingy with using them - they only run at about $14 in the stores and it can save you a lot of hassle from having to reload/waste your defib over and over.

-The enemies that shoot you are your friends! The only problems I had where the melee enemies that rushed you and the heavys, which just kept on coming. When the enemy takes cover to shoot at you it gives you time to analyze the situation and figure out what you want to do.

-Find a way to make money to buy supplies! I used the Tombstone minigame a lot. SAVE right before you start playing, bet the maximum amount ($25) and try to kill all four before they get to you. If you win on the 10x or 4x round, back out and save again. If you win on the last round that's fine, as you at least keep your money. If you lose, load your saved game and try again. It may not be the fastest way to make money, but it doesn't require any consistent skill to win and it helped me buy the armor upgrades as early as possible.
-Cerichsen said that if you are willing to play through the second Scorchers mission, it will unlock Jackpot in Wellspring and he made between $5000-$7000 from the video poker game in about 30 minutes.

-I didn't bother with any of the side missions or collectibles, as I had already gone through and gotten 100% prior to the release of this DLC, but if you are going for the 100% just remember to be careful and take it slow - it may make you feel like it takes longer than just running through, but all that "time you save" quickly goes into the negative when you end up having to reload to try it 4-5 times.

-This is for the campaign that came shipped with the game - it does NOT require you to do the Scorcher DLC add-ons.

-****This achievement has been confirmed to be stackable with the other difficulty achievements**** (Thanks and congrats to X InFlames80 X)

Please feel free to add comments for any way I can make this better - I'm not putting a full mission by mission walkthrough as those are easily found on the internet, and these were just a few tips that helped me make it through the Ultra-Nightmare mode.

I would add that the nailgun is quite handy since Rebar shots take enemies out with 1 shot and the Railgun Slugs gives you the ability to shoot through walls which easily can take out 2-3 enemies at ones when lined up perfectly

You might wanna add that having the "Fists of Rage" will help you massively! You could, for instance, conserve ammo in the first levels by simply knocking the enemies out with your fists.

If you are at the end of the game lets say the last mission b4 you go assault the authority. can you just change the difficulty to ULTRA NIGHTMARE and get this achievement?

Yeah I had put off playing it on nightmare for so long, I finally did it back in September and then they put out the DLC. I think I will get the dlc when it goes on sale for 200 or if I get a big itch maybe I will get it sooner. I would rather they add this achievement along with new game+ so I can feel like my previous two playthroughs meant a little more.

@Mobius Evalon : Railgun ammo does NOT 1 shot everything. Yes, it's high damage, but it is at very most on par with Rebar ammo. Also, given how much easier it is to line up shots with Rebar ammo and the fact Rebar leaves corpses behind (Railgun vaporises them), overall the railgun feels merely "good", by comparison.

Let the Shotgun do most of the talking, especially against Mutants. Rebar for Bandits and Rockets for anything like Krakens, Giant Mutants or Authority Elites.

The Railgun's only real use is for killing enemies whilst you're in cover regenerating health because you're either too tight or too poor to use some Bandages.

How the hell do u beat the races impossible

By MORBSTA on 13 Jan 2013 12:13
I honestly didn't even look at most of the races - I had already gotten all the achievements on regular Nightmare mode and didn't need to 100% the game again. However, I do remember them being brutal even on regular Nightmare, so I guess the only advice I can give is stick with it and maybe go kill bandits to earn tokens to upgrade your car and make sure you have everything you can get to make your car as strong and fast as possible.

Thanks 4 the advice m8, one thing tho i thought to continue the campaign u have to do a race at least to put weapons on your car.

There are a few required races, and they were fairly difficult, but, at least to complete the game, you only needed to do 3-4 (I think, plus or minus 1-2). If you want to 100%, obviously you have to do all of them, which is much more difficult.

Is it even possible to do the timed races on Ultra Nightmare? O_o I mean, I can beat the other races but not the timed ones, I was always like 2 seconds from the target time.

Angelr1pper : Infinite money = Infinite Ammo = Infinite Racing Certificates (Bandit Kills) = Every Upgrade = Easy races.

If you're willing to grind that is. The Time Trials require at very least a maxed out Engine and Boost. Personally, I prefer the Cuprino over the Monarch in terms of Handling, but the Monarch's Pulse Cannon and Armour Plating make it essential against the Authority.

Buggy Races suck, but are very doable.

I had the same problem with races -- the time trials were impossible. I couldn't even beat Durar's thing right at the beginning of the game for a boost upgrade.

As for not getting the achievement, there's something fishy going on there like difficulty switching -- I got the achievement right at the last cutscene like I was supposed to. Start a new game on ultra nightmare, play to the end. There is no shortcut.

For the easy money one, it's best to do it when he's selling Viper Rockets (I think that's what their called, the alternate ammo for the RL). Initially, I was getting approx $2-400 per trip. By the end of it, I was getting close to $1000. Took me 30-45 mins to do it all, but I was also on my PC while grinding it.

Also, OBT62, I did the Scorchers DLC in my Night Terror run, as well as a couple of the Wasteland Sewers (for the Desert Spores, etc) I'd say any DLC you have included must be completed as well, before assaulting the Authority base.

I never entered the sewers at all in any of my playthroughs, and received the achievement when I was supposed to at the end. I did play the DLC on my ultra nightmare playthrough, so there may be something to that.

If you're having trouble on the very 1st time trial like i was. ( the one for the boost upgrade ) don't try doing the circuit which it lays out. When you get to the checkpoint do a quick 180 and go back the way you came.

Great guide but i would like to add some things, i'm currently halfway on my ultra nightmare run and found out that the gun with big mommas are incredible as one headshot kill at sniper distances. And the pop rockets for the shotgun against enemies with armor like the gearheads and the authority works as a charm and does one hit kill with ease.

Other things is to always have some walkings sentry bot to release when things get to hot, or when you need a proper distraction as the enemy will focus at them first.

And for the money problem i think that playing the tombstone is taking to much time and gives the player to low rewards for the effort. I made the second quest in the DLC so that the Jackpot opens up in Wellspring and spend alot of time playing poker, where i could made 5000-7000$ in about 30 min. Whenever im in need of money i just go there for a while.

A tip I've found pretty useful since I've been playing:

The Crossbow is one of your best friends. It insta-stealth-kills most enemies and 90% of the time, a head shot with an Electro Bolt is an insta-kill, too. Use Steel-Tipped Bolts against organics (Mutants, Clans, etc) and Electro Bolts against the Authority. It's great for thinning crowds before you have to initiate a fight, or get spotted.

RACES ON ULTRA-NIGHTMARE: Yes, Durar's first time trial is a ridiculous :29. Just keep trying, it's possible. The very first time-trial race at Wellspring was impossible (for me) at first, but once you upgrade the engine it's doable. But really you don't even need to do that time trial at all. Race the easier 2nd and 3rd races, and you'll have enough race certificates to buy the minigun required for mission progression. Also, you get 1 race certificate from Sally's Bounty for every bandit car you destroy out in the wasteland.

I can't stress enough completing the first DLC mission to get the nailgun and carrying that throughout the campaign. Its' ammo upgrades are amazing -- rebar shots will one-hit everything, and the rail gun slugs will one-hit everything through walls. The nailgun is perfectly accurate, so combining that with wingsticks for the close-up enemies make ultra nightmare a breeze, especially considering that you get your rebar rounds back from corpse looting.

EASY MONEY WITHOUT GAMBLING: Once you make it to Subway Town, find Stew (behind Jani's Supplies) who sells one item at a discount. He changes items as missions progress. When he has a bulk item like ammo, you buy it from him at discount and sell it to Jani as profit. I caught him selling Authority MG rounds at $20 each; with the Crimson Elite Armor I was selling them back to Jani at $26 a pop. It cost $500 to buy 1000 rounds (max) from Stew, then Jani bought the load for $649. That's $149 per trip from Stew to Jani. It's painfully repetitive, but you could put on some music and do this for about an hour, and you'll turn $500 into $9999.

I did this, then spent about the entire $10K on ingredients for a full Advanced Sentry Bot ARMY, a full compliment of Advanced Wingsticks, and explosive packs to make all the Pop Rockets and and Dynamite Bolts I could ever want.

Desert Spores can be found using this guide : http://rage.wikia.com/wiki/Desert_Spore

Using Desert Spores and Night Blossoms you can make Apophis Infusions which permanently increase your max health. With the final mission of the Scorchers DLC you get 4 more hidden at the start of the temple, which means you can create 9 Apophis Infusions yourself, and with the Fabricator or Crimson Elite Armours, that will result in +99 Health which will cap you out at 199 Health for the game. I highly recommend visiting Crazy Joe's swamp as early and as often as possible to harvest Night Blossoms as they only randomly respawn after you complete a Quest/Mission. There are 5 potential Night Blossoms between the entrance to the swamp and the crater (with the 2 Desert Spores in it) so be sure to check them all. You can also buy Night Blossoms, once you reach the Eastern Wasteland, from Jani's Supplies, but they're obviously way more useful early on, so I just harvested them until I had what I needed.

As for what qualifies as a Quest/Mission, yes, even the DLC Sewer Missions count, both times you clear them, so abuse the system as necessary.

And speaking of those Sewer Missions, remember the first time (and only the first time) you enter Kvasir's Sewers near the Northern Watchtower, there is an early obtainable Rocket Launcher under the stairs that lead to the exit. Pick this up and you've got an even greater advantage.

Don't forget the ID Software collectables like the Wolf Goblet + Quayola Quayons (Ghost Hideout), Shambler Plush (Wasted Garage) and Pinkies as these can really help out early on with money troubles and I cannot stress enough how good Video Poker is for earning easy money. By abusing it, you can max out on anything you need, whenever you need it. Also, as a general loadout, the Rebar Nailgun with Sentry Bots and Wingsticks make for a very easy time of it.

Edit : To clarify about infinite money, you need to have The Scorchers DLC and have access to Jackpots which is only possible after clearing the Scorched Refinement DLC Quest. The Video Poker machines have great odds and a good payout ratio provided you have a good eye for Poker. It's very generous and often you can see a winning hand coming, so just practice and you'll soon see the huge returns.

However, without the DLC it is still possible to gain huge amounts of money/ammo, it's just a bit more complicated and a lot more time consuming. To do it without the DLC, you need to locate either of the 2 groups of people playing Tombstones (1 is between Coffer's Outfitters and the Job Board in Wellspring, the other is down the stairs to the Racing Track in Subway Town). Simply save your game and play Tombstones. If you win save, if you start to lose too much, reload your save. Remember to keep several different slots and alternate your saves with this method. As for ammo, just keep replaying Mutant Bash TV. You can get a good amount of ammo and it's not too hard. Even better is that it's free. I hope this helps to clarify anything anyone may not have known or understood before.

The mission in Capital Prime was a breeze, I had max Av2X rounds, 1000+ for the Pulse Cannon (and 20+ BFG Rounds), over 200 rockets, 90 Bandages, 50 Advanced Sentry Bots, 99 Advanced Wingsticks and whole load of everything else. Also the Railgun is great for when you're injured and up against heavy opposition.

All in all, a very fun third playthrough for me, and a very easy Achievement.

Just wanted to point out that where you say you 'cap out at 199 health', that should read 'you gain an extra 199 health' which would leave the player with 299 health total for the game. I was a little confused when I was reading through the Apophis Infusion wiki page (see here: http://rage.wikia.com/wiki/Apophis_Infusion ). There's 18 Desert Spores total (with all DLC), leading to a cap of +180/198 health, totalling 290/298 health all up.

Other than that, great solution. +1 from me. ^_^

I practically never used the Crossbow, it just seemed pointless imo. I prefer to just bait enemies to a chokepoint and then blast 'em with a shotgun or impale with Rebar ammo. In fact, tbh, just pick a weapon you love and are good with, and let the enemies eat your red hot death, because with the infinite money, you can afford absolutely anything.

I've never been a big fan of crossbows in any game either, I always prefer to use a longbow or (in RAGE's case) Sniper Rifle.

You have to complete the whole game (main questline finishing with Capital Prime).

I'm sure they haven't patched out the easy money methods. They're not glitches anyway, they're exploits. I'll ask my friend who's doing it currently to see if there's been any changes, but I doubt it.

I never used that method, because it requires you to be far enough in to the game to have access to Subway Town and it's quite inconsistent profit-wise.

Early on is when you need the money and supplies, and that's still there. I asked a friend and the methods I listed still all work. I'd like to double check myself but I'm non-stop grinding up to, and probably beyond, Saints Row IV's release date, so I'm hard-pressed for spare time.

Just learn to use my Video Poker or Tombstones methods, they work brilliantly.

The health increase tips with insane gambling winnings makes this a breeze. Max out wing sticks and feltrite AR rounds as soon as possible and nothing survives more than a few seconds. The sentry bots provide great distractions when multiple enemies rush as well!

You're absolutely right, it was about 3am when I wrote that and I forgot that it took 2 Desert Spores to make 1 Apophis infusion. Never write / comment on solutions when you're tired or drunk. Don't even open TA when you're both. :P

Most people who are going for a hard difficulty achievements should be mildly competent with FPS games. One thing I've been doing in game that you've not mentioned is using the Crossbow for stealth kills; Steel-Tipped Bolts for organic enemies (mutants, clans, etc), Electro Bolts for Authority. It's a guaranteed one-hit kill and saves a ton of ammo. Initially, until you've built yourself up to tank a bit of damage, the Crossbow is your best friend. Even after that, it's great for thinning crowds before you initiate fights.

By KJT CD ACD on 08 Feb 2013 03:52
Are you sure about that? There are 18 total Desert Spores in the game and you need 2 Desert Spores per Apophis Infusion, which makes 9 total. You start the game with 100 Health and with the Fabricator/Crimson Elite Armours, you'll earn +11 Health per 1 of the 9 Apophis Infusions you use.

So, that's 100 base Health + (11 x 9 = 99) = 199 total Health.

I think you've misread the article, bro. You need 2 Desert Spores per Apophis Infusion, not 1. I'm 100% sure that's where you've gone wrong.

Thanks for the +1 btw, I tried to cover everything that the other guide missed. Everyone knows already about baiting out AI, tactical reloading and how to generally handle FPS games, it's the nuances and secret resources that really give players the edge to breeze it.

If anyone has any real sticking points in the game that they want advice with, I'll gladly edit subsections in.

Including the Scorcher missions in this DLC but skipping all side missions and other achievements not in this DLC, it took me about 12 hours to complete the campaign on Ultra Nightmare. The Scorcher missions themselves take about 2-3 hours and take place through the first half of the game (before you go to Subway Town).

The biggest changes to Ultra Nightmare over Nightmare are:

The price increase for supplies.
The amount of items made per recipe.
The amount of damage taken when shot.
The difficulty to win races (the time limit on the first race in Wellspring is 1:28 minutes instead of 2:08).
The duration of time required for Nanotrites to recharge (for your heart defibrillation).

1. If you've completed the game before you cannot just load up the last mission on Ultra Nightmare and complete it to get the achievement - you must play through the entire game again. The achievement does however stack.

2. The cash farming will make this achievement pretty much a breeze. Given you can only hold $9999, make sure you fully stock up on ammo, bandages and ingredients through your gameplay.
2a. In Wellspring, the Roly-Poly load glitch lets you get up to $9999 within about 10 minutes. Example shown here:
2b. In Subway Town, buying Viper Rockets from Stew (top floor, behind Jani's shop) and selling them to Jani will earn you a 13% profit each time. Getting up to $9999 from $1000 takes longer than the Wellspring strategy; about 40 minutes or so. You will be able to buy Viper Rockets after the you complete the first mission (clearing the Blue Station), but not after the following mission (going to the Gearhead Vault).

3. Make sure you pick up armor upgrades (light and medium in Wellspring, heavy in Subway Town) and the recipes (in both Wellspring and Subway Town). Even with the cash farming and a lot of ammo, you will still die quickly due to taking higher damage.

4. Sentry Bots (and after the recipe upgrade in Subway Town, Advanced Sentry Bots) are really useful. While they don't have a lot of armor and ultimately won't last long, they can keep enemies off your back and insta-kill most enemies if they jump on them. Keep enough ingredients on you to craft 5-10 of them for any given mission.

5. Save Often. The autosave checkpoints are less frequent than you would think, and reverting back to a checkpoint can take you 20-30 minutes back from where you died.

6. The Nailgun, obtained after the first Scorcher mission, is a really useful weapon. The Rebar ammo will one-shot kill most enemies (including enemy sentry bots) and has a very long range. The Railgun ammo provides you with a special infrared-like scope that can show enemies even if you have no line of sight, and shoots through walls. This ammo comes in useful for various "bosses" that you will come across towards ends of missions, as well as snipers in the second Dead City mission. Keep in mind that it has a somewhat long reload and isn't good for close quarter combat.

7. The Rocket Launcher is your ultimate buff weapon when all else fails or just need to get rid of a tough enemy quickly (especially Kraken enemies, who can kill you in two hits.)

Overall the achievement isn't too difficult, especially when you farm cash (and why wouldn't you?). Good luck!

Thanks for this, z RagnaroK z. I think having your comment here is great and probably doesn't need to be placed into the solution, but if I change my mind I'll comment again and give you credit.

Sounds good! I couldn't justify making all this information into its own solution because it really isn't a "guide" by itself, but still very useful. Cheers!

I had a little trouble getting the Roly Poly money farming technique to work consistently, so I wanted to provide some insight on how to do the method step by step on your Xbox.

1.) Go to Jackpots in Wellspring (can only be accessed if you own the Scorchers DLC. Must complete the 2nd mission of the DLC before you can access Jackpots too) then go to the Roly Poly game table inside.
2.) Start by placing a $5 bet on any number and spin the wheel
3.) Take note of the number that it lands on and remember it for later.
4.) Press A to continue playing.
5.) Press Y to clear the board of any bets.
6.) Press B to exit the Roly Poly game.
7.) Now, make a save file, in any slot, while you're standing in front of Lili (small person who runs the game).
8.) Then load up that same save file that you just created (NOT THE AUTOSAVE FILE).
9.) Once it loads, access the game again and place a maximum ($50) bet on that number you remembered from step 3.
10.) If done correctly, you will see "you've won $600" in a blue box on the screen.
11.) Once you have earned the $600, press A to Continue playing, then clear the board again with Y, and press B to exit.
12.) Repeat steps 2 - 12 until you reach your desired amount of money.

Keep in mind that there is probably a more efficient way of doing this, but this was the only way I could get the method to work for me consistently. Not sure if it matters, but I was playing on my Xbox 1 with a physical copy of the 360 disc. I have no idea if that effects it or not, but figured it might be worth mentioning.

From $0-$9999 it took me around 11 minutes. So this method is very effective and allows you to buy all the ammo and upgrades you want. This makes Ultra Nightmare a breeze. I personally just bought 999 rockets and didn't use anything else but that and bandages during most of my Ultra Nightmare play through. Just spam rockets and heal whenever you get hurt. Easy peasy.

Remember that this is by far the most effective and quickest $ farming method to date. Once you leave Wellspring, there are other ways to earn small amounts of money but I recommend buying everything you can and then topping off your money at $9999 before proceeding to the next city. That way you can just ride out the rest of the game with what's in your wallet, and buy anything you might need.

Hope this helps!
sjpsjpsjp: Feel free to add any of this information to your guide, if you so desire.

Ultra Nightmare is the highest difficulty that is available, right after Nightmare. This achievement is for completing the base campaign on Ultra Nightmare, not just the DLC. If you have completed the game's campaign already, you'll have to complete it a second time on Ultra Nightmare. There isn't much a difference in difficulty in comparison to Nightmare mode. The same rules apply;

  • Make sure you're stocked up on Medkits.
  • Watch your defib bar.
  • Don't rush into battle.
  • Make use of cover.

Note: This means the main game campaign, not the DLC missions.

Ultra Nightmare is just a slightly harder version of Nightmare so not really a challenge at all. The best advice I can give you is to take cover wherever possible and try not to use your fists on enemies or get up close and personal, else you will die very quickly. If you stock up on bandages and grenades then it's easy to do. Here is some general info:

  • Bandages - Always have bandages on you. These are a life saver on Ultra Nightmare. Bandages work like health packs and restore your health upon use. You get the schematic given to you early on in the main game so make some bandages whenever you get a chance. The schematic is obtained after completing the "Where's Juno" mission. Bandages can also be bought for $15.

  • Pop Rockets - You can grind out money in wellsprings to buy loads of parts to make pop rockets for the shotgun. These are one hit kill on pretty much every enemy in the game, very useful for Ultra Nightmare. See here for a money exploit (credit to snake2410): LINK. Please note that you have to finish the second mission in this DLC, before the Club will open up (credit to yuri03042).

  • Nail Gun - This is rewarded to you by Sarah upon finishing the "Hagar Caves" mission. It has 3 ammo types; Nail, Rebar and Railgun Slugs. All of them are very powerful and ammo is fairly expensive for it though but the gun is useful against a lot of enemies. Ammo can be bought from all of the general stores.
