If playing on Xbox, to get to research you hold RT then choose the Chemistry Vial in the bottom left. Researching anything on that screen pops this achievement.
Starting the game on Campaign gives you 200 research points to start which is enough to unlock some of the things (100 or 200 cost) immediately.
