How to unlock the Three Cheers for Progress achievement in Railway Empire 2 - Definitive Guide
This is not a hard achievement to get, it just takes a lot of time sitting around doing nothing. It took me about 8 hours to get this, after using a free game to get the 80 towns connected and complete all the free tasks in a game.
I do not know if you can continue playing after completing a campaign and unlocking the entire research tree that way, so to be on the safe side, I suggest setting up a free game using the whole map of either North America or Europe so that you can complete all tasks in a free game and connect 80 towns in a USA and Europe game.
BEFORE YOU START your free game, make sure you that you set it up in the following manner:
After selecting your character, on the difficulty level page, there are two key things to consider:
Play the game normally, complete all your tasks, do your co-op towns and 80 towns if you are going for those, and then just wait. Yup, that's it. Sit around and run errands or go watch TV or whatever. Your goal here is to simply collect Innovation Points and start unlocking things in the Research Menu. Here's some things to consider while you do this, however:
WARNING: RumataEstorish reports that he unlocked the last research by winning it through an auction and it did not unlock, so to be on the safe side, make sure you purchase the last research with points. Make sure you also save frequently to avoid any problems so that you can revert to a previous save if the achievement doesn't unlock.
Let me know if you have any questions.

BEFORE YOU START your free game, make sure you that you set it up in the following manner:
- Select "Custom Game" from the main menu
- Top of page tab over to North America or Europe
- Region: Whole map
- Starting Year: 1910 - this is key! Starting later gives you faster trains to play with and makes more of the research tree available from the start
After selecting your character, on the difficulty level page, there are two key things to consider:
- Play with competitors - this will allow you to unlock the research tree faster by allowing you to sabotage the HQ of your competitor and stealing their technology. However, it also means that some of your tasks may include buying out your competitor, and you would want to do so in order to connect 80 towns in a game if you are going for that achievement. So that basically makes it a bit more difficult, but also faster.
- If you just want to chill and not worry about competitors then set that to zero in the difficulty level. It will take longer, but you don't have to worry about buying anyone out
- Game hints: Off
- Game Relevant Newspapers: Off
- Autosave: On
- Show Auctions: Off
- Show Quarterly Report: Off
- Second Tab (Controls): Automatic Pause (Off) - this is optional. You can change it later after you have finished your tasks

Here's some things to consider while you do this, however:
- The game will still pause when there is an offer from a failing business, or blackmail, so check back often
- Connect your controller via USB so it doesn't shut off automatically although I don't know if that's fullproof
- You will collect 60 points a month for the first few decades, but that drops to 30 per month after I believe the 1920s

lol...the reason to start at 1910 is that the game conveniently unlocks 190 of the 243 techs for you.

Please note, if you receive LAST research via auction, achievement won't pop.
Other researches can be obtained via auctions for speed without problems (of course if you're near game to catch them)

Note: this achievement is now listed as "discontinued" after people couldn't unlock it once the DLC came out. I don't know why it's not listed as "unobtainable" but I'm assuming that the developers are aware of the issue and will fix it since they are still releasing DLC.

I read it quickly and I don't think it would be heard here. In the settings there is an option to enable x5 time acceleration. In menu - Options - Gameplay - Allow higher game speed - On. This will save you a lot of time after you've already connected 80 cities like me and you have nothing to do in the game.
