Rare Replay

The snapshots provide 'bite-sized' challenge in a pre-defined scenario in the game, accessible via the snapshots section of the Rare Replay interface. You cannot use the rewind feature when attempting these.

There are five snapshots to complete, which are as follows:

1. Smashing Performance
Listen up, 'Toads! Score at least 15,000 points in 60 seconds.

A fairly mild snapshot starts off the set of five here, set in stage one of the game. Just attack enemies as they appear ('smash hit' attacks being preferable to score points more rapidly) and you should accrue 15,000 points comfortably within the 60 seconds given.

2. Clipped Wingers
The Hypno-Orb's malfunctioned, but there's no time to relax - reach the end in 100 seconds!

A slightly moderated version of stage 11 ('Clipper Winger') from the full game, here you're riding a unicycle that you need to navigate to the end of the fixed course within a fairly tight time limit (albeit one that's slightly more generous than the standard version of the stage). The unicycle will move rapidly whilst you hold the D-pad or  in the direction of travel, so overall speed here is based about how rapidly and precisely you can change steering direction at each right-angled corner of the track. Time your direction changes well and you'll succeed here.

3. Turbo Tunnel Infinite
It's a toad's worst nightmare! Survive for 45 seconds in an endless Turbo Tunnel.

Set in the infamous 'Turbo Tunnel' of stage 3, completing this snapshot successfully is all about memorisation and reactions - and practice - with your speeder bike accelerating as the course progresses (such that obstacles come at increasing frequency). Honestly, the best way to go about attempting this is just to practice, as fortunately the pattern of the course and obstacles is fixed. However, I've included below under the "Beyond the Impossible" achievement a video taken from Youtube which demonstrates the course layout, which you may find helpful in attempting this snapshot.

Be warned that while this achievement only(!) requires you to reach 45 seconds, the "Beyond the Impossible" achievement requires you to complete a full circuit, at around 2 minutes and 15 seconds.

4. Slippery Toad
Reach the end of the Arctic Caverns within 60 seconds.

The main challenge with this snapshot comes from the icy surface, combined with the deadly spikes that litter the area. You'll need to take a path downwards against the right-most wall, all the way to the left and then up and to the right, jumping over enemies as they appear. Finally, drop down the pit to the right, either using the platform that descends when stood on or just by falling, to land on the platform to the right at the bottom of the pit and complete the snapshot. 60 seconds is fairly generous here, so you can affords to take a little care as you manoeuvre through the cavern.

5. Rat Race Rush
Race to the bottom of the shaft and destroy the bomb before it can be detonated!

An abbreviated version of stage 10 of the full game ('Rat Race'), here you have to beat the rat to the bottom of the vertical shaft in which the snapshot takes place and defuse a bomb at the bottom (by pressing  - don't forget to do this!). Success here is about minimising the amount of time that you spend on platforms, as at this time you're not descending - so whenever you fall between platforms, aim for the gap in the next platform as far as possible.

If you're struggling to keep ahead of the rat, firstly don't worry as it will naturally get caught up in some of the later platforms, but you can also slow its descent by ramming it (with  or ) as it's about to pass you - this can make it miss the gap in a platform and have to go back and forth along the platform again before descending. The low walls that you encounter here will start to rise and fall as you reach them, allowing progress past them after a brief delay.
