How to unlock the Cobra Commander achievement in Rare Replay - Definitive Guide

For this achievement you'll need to complete 25 levels of Cobra Triangle.

This is a lot easier than it would appear especially with infinite lives and the rewind ability (remember to turn these on in options at the start). For this guide I'll focus on the level types and some general tips to get you through.

Controls
cn_RT to accelerate
cn_B to fire
cn_back to select your power-up
cn_LT to rewind (don't forget this, you'll need it a fair bit)

Power-ups
The power-ups are the little hexagonal red and white boxes. As you pickup more of them the words at the bottom will flash, press cn_back to choose the flashing power-up.

Turbo: You will accelerate faster from a stand still, this isn't really needed. Might be worth getting if you struggle to get a good start.

Fire: Changes the style of your gunfire (I prefer the spread fire that shoots
forward). Remember this power-up cannot max out, it will always change your fire type. The four way spread is also worth trying.

Speed: Changes the top speed of your boat, I would get this maxed out after getting full missiles and the fire type you prefer.

Missile: Gives you missiles! The last missile upgrade is homing
missiles, I strongly recommend maxing this out first.

Force: Gives temporary invincibility, temporary homing missiles, and REFILLS
energy. I never bothered with this, might be worth grabbing if you're struggling at any point.

User Hooch Lee (in the other guide) says "With infinite lives you can get all Upgrades in the first level.. collect the pods and don't cross the finish line. Rinse and repeat.". If you struggle with some of the levels it might be worth considering.

Levels
There are only a few level types, once you know the trick to these you'll fly through most of this game.

Race:
Very simple just need to cross the line in the time limit, these levels are great for grabbing power-ups and getting upgraded, if you struggle with any jumps (especially later on) remember to rewind with cn_LT

Pods:
This level is all about grabbing the power-ups while going over ramps, if you miss any just rewind.

Mines:
For this level you need to grab the mines at the start of the map and drop them off in the square at the other side to disarm them. Enemy boats will try to bump into you and steal the mine off you if they do you can just rewind or bump into them to steal it back.

It can get trickier later on so remember to shoot out the guns (with your homing missiles) on the side to make things easier, otherwise the best advice I can give is to turn in circles this is the only way to get distance between you and the enemy boats.

Turning in circles and rewinding when a mine is stolen should get you through.

Obstacle race:
These can be a bit of a pain, the levels will have logs and whirlpools to prevent you getting to the end before the time runs out. Later on icebergs come out of the water at you.

Once more rewinding through the trickier bits should get you through.

Targets:
A very easy level type just shoot targets and go through to the end.
The four way shot fire type will really help you score more on these levels.

People:
For these levels you need to protect as many people in the ocean as you can.
Enemy boats will speed in and try to steal people away and into an exit you have to stop them. Just like the mine level you can bump into the boats to steal the people back, but I wouldn't bother with this.

For these levels I would sit in the middle of the people and just spin and shoot, when a person is stolen you can rewind to make sure you spin in the right direction and nail them.

You only need one person to get through the level so don't worry too much about losing some try to end up with 2-3 grouped together and protect them. I always end up with just one alive but it is enough.

The biggest problem with this level is getting hit by a missile and losing a life, this kept getting my last man stolen. If you're in this situation you have to keep rewinding till you can nail the ship that shoots you first, it can take several attempts but it will get you through.

Waterfall:
You need to use ramps to get over the waterfalls while dodging whirlpools.
Just use rewind if you miss a ramp and you'll get through these in no time.

Monsters/Boss fights:
There are a few monsters you'll meet as you progress through the game.
I highly recommend missiles to help you get through.

Sea Serpent
I found these very easy just shoot away and you should kill it in no time. With infinite lives on this should be a breeze.

Crab
This one can be annoying, I kept running out of time so make sure you have upgraded those missiles.

When the level starts accelerate down and under the crab, then go up the right hand side of the screen, ending up in the top right hand corner of the map. From here the crab will hardly hit you at all.

Point towards the bottom left of the corner and shoot like mad, with a bit of luck you'll get through this boss.

I added this video to show the positioning.
Octopus
Shoot, shoot and shoot some more!
You'll be able to take him down pretty quickly, don't even worry about dodging his tentacles.

Shark
This boss is a pain.
He cannot be hit when he's underwater!
He can only be hit if you face him straight on!
He will eat you if he gets the chance wasting valuable time!

He will swim from left to right and raise up to try to charge and eat you, this is your time to shoot.

The best tactic is to wait see where he rises up and use rewind to get in position each time this, used properly this should make this a breeze, don't worry about getting eaten with a good hit you can take almost half his health away.

If you have any questions, post them below.

Good luck

You can sit on the first race level and fully upgrade if I remember correctly.

So, looks like you can't beat the shark unless you have the spread gun...cause there's no way I'm doing enough damage with the quad direction fire.

You can still beat the Shark if you don't have the spread gun. Use the rewind to line up your shots and spam the hell out of the B button. You should be able to take two bars off of the shark for damage. I had maxed out missiles and my weapon was the t shaped shot. Doing two points of damage will give you enough time to beat the shark. I just did it mere seconds before posting this.

I don't get how people are advising to upgrade speed first with the power ups. Is there a way you can choose which to upgrade? I'm only getting turbo and fire and that is it on repeating the first level. WTF!!!! This is so frustrating!

@MegaManSurvives I had the same problem. You need more speed. Head backward or allow yourself to die and get more powerups until SPEED flashes. Them press X.

Just a heads up for anyone struggling with the shark, try shooting directly into his path. I was stuck with the t shooter(four directions), and this worked. Each time I was grabbed, but I took off around a bar or two or health, and managed to do it with plenty of time left.

Is there a way to boost? I cannot pickup the mines and carry them all the way over to the drop off spot. They are way too fast and always catch up

So for a little clearer help on this. Start the first race, grab the power up and hang back before the first turn. You will get a lot of power up boats coming towards you. Just keep at it a few times and let the timer run down. With infinite lives, you’ll be able to quickly max your speed and missles and get the spread fire.

One thing I would add that I noticed as I was playing is that you need the pods to power up your boat. If you don't get them, some of the later levels will be nearly impossible as the ai will be much faster and stronger than they should be comparatively.

One way to seriously give yourself a boost is to fail the race level. Get every pod you can get, upgrade yourself, (speed first makes catching the pod boats much easier) but have no real intention of crossing the finish line. When you die, you will respawn at the start of the race with any upgrades you made in the previous failed attempt.

There are 25 levels to complete , most of them are just fine and easy to complete but the last two are bosses and those can be a pain.
Just make sure you got the infinite lives cheat enabled in the options menu and try to upgrade as quick as you can by collecting the diamond like upgrade pods. You should upgrade your TURBO , SPEED , and MISSILES to the max , FIRE should be upgraded 4 or 5 times until you have the spreadshot , I stuck with the SPREADSHOT the whole game because the others didn't work for me. FORCE gives you a temporary shield and all your health back but in the end it's kind of useless.

Level 24 was a little bit of luck as my time was out and he just exploded. The boss his energy keeps refilling and you only have about 15 seconds to complete the mission. Just keep unloading your guns and homing missiles and with a little luck you have him down in 2 or 3 tries. Because he is really fast , you only have 15 seconds and his fireballs are instant death there is not much tactics , just pure luck that you have his energy drained within the time limit.

Level 25 is a real pain .... if you don't know what to do
Avoiding him is not a real big problem , getting his energy down within the time limit is. You can only hurt him from the front when this sharks head is above the water , shooting him from the back is useless.
What you have to do is follow his pattern and when his head is above the water memorize this spot and use the REWIND trigger cn_LT to rewind a couple of seconds , enough to position yourself in front of where he came up before the rewind. When he pops up right in front of you, unload you arsenal and shoot him as fast as you can. You will be eaten for sure but don't worry , you have infinite lives ( right?? ) Repeat this process and you will have him down with more than 30 seconds to spare.
It takes some getting used to but once you know how long to rewind to give yourself enough time to get to the right position it is REALLY easy and you can get as much as 3 or 4 pieces of his life bar at a time.

Good luck

If there are levels that need some more explanation , please post them in the comments and I will try to add my tactics for them but most of them are doable with the infinite lives cheat on and the maxed out set-up.

If you have selected the upgrade with cn_X ( for example TURBO ) and let the time run out you automatically restart the level WITH the upgrades ( Turbo in this case )you've selected. Play the same level , get some upgrade pods , and select other upgrades like FIRE , SPEED or MISSILES and before you cross the finish line , let the time run out once more en you automatically restart the level again but with the upgrades you got with you last life. You can repeat this until you have everything upgraded.

how do you make the ramp jump in stage 14? I could not figure it out as to jumping across the ice.

By EnAN0 ERS on 09 Aug 2015 05:45
This is the race where you have a couple of jumps after each other , am I right? All the jumps are straight on. Make sure you line up straight when you approach the ramp and never try to steer when you are in the air.
If you have your speed and turbo maxed it shouldn't be a problem even if you are not on top speed as you gain some speed when you jump. The ramps in the beginning of the level do not give much of an advantage so I left these alone and did not try to take them.

there is a ramp with a big gap between the ramp and where you are supposed to land, I want to say towards the end. Is it necessary to have all the speed and turbo upgrades to make the jump? i tried for several minutes and i could not make it across the gap, no matter what i tried.

@Hooch Lee: So even after you grab a bunch and the time expires you still get to keep those? Do you reload the save after you get a few? This is not very clear to me... Without knowing how to grind these upgrades this solution is useless.

but once you select one to upgrade, does it auto-save? or you have to manually save? (that wouldn't work) I don't get how you would be able to do them all in Stage 1 is my question...

Even without grinding you should get enough pods to upgrade your boat pretty far. You can get many upgrades in the level where you have all the ramps and upgradepods. Remember that You manually have to select the upgrade by pressing X when the right one at the bottom of the screen is blinking. Just a matter of selecting the right ones. If you acquire 5 upgrade pods and force is blinking , the sixth you get will let you select the first ( turbo in this case ) The turbo upgrade should be the first you get in the first level , after that concentrate on the speed upgrades if that is needed. I am gonna start up the game now to check again what trouble lvl 14 gives.

The third level , where the objectieve is to collect as many pods as possible should also give you a good start. The race levels can also give you a fair amount of upgrades by shooting the boats that tow an upgrade pod and then collect them.

For lvl 14 , forget the jumps in the beginning of the level , they only provide a little shortcut but nothing spectacular. Even without those the level can be finished within the time limit. At the end of this level you have a double jump. As long as your boat is on its top speed and your angle is straight you do NOT even have to have all the speed upgrades. I just tried it and my speed wasn't upgraded to the max.

I highly recommend as soon as possible upgrade up. No matter how often you die even with codes. You'll kept your upgrades because speed in particular will help in a few levels. Some of them will greatly speed up boss fights. There's a variety what you do in this game. Use the rewind feature when you need it like making some jumps or you think you might do more damage to a boss.

The actual races you don't have to stress out about being in first place. Just make it to the finish line you're good. The second to last boss has a short time limit but thankfully you don't actually need to kill it to move on. Some obstacles are difficult to get around. A handful of stages, you need to take five explosives to a particular spot.

The later ones will be trickier due to the speed of two opposing ships. Do your best to avoid contact since you can't destroy em. Just a touch, one of them can take away an explosive. Some of the trickiest jumps you have to somehow get around whirl pool. My best advice is often pay attention while rewinding back a little bit. If you are lucky, you can hit the platform just in time to make a jump.

Of course, we need to talk about the most difficult obstacle of all. The final boss is a shark that's broken in a few ways. He easily can instantly kill you but the game forces you to be dangerously close to damage him. Sometimes he doesn't get damage at all even in spots your weapons should work on him. He will often move around like a shark limiting your opportunities to kill him.

A couple of stages are just bonus ones that helps kill some stress off while you're going for this achievement. Honestly, this is a great game I kinda wish I had growing up. Also, get use to dying or possibly running out of time. To upgrade you need to collect pods. Sadly, you need to collect a certain amount for some categories. Thankfully when you no longer can see that category's name, you'll fully upgraded it.

In other words, let's say the final category is the only one left. You'll need to collect five pods then press X to use it to upgrade that category. Why couldn't they simply allow use by pressing select then either left or right to select which category we want to upgrade. I know this is more tedious than it should be. On the bright side, it really does make a notable difference in the overall experience.

This achievement requires you to complete one full playthrough of the game, which consists of 25 stages (though the final stage that doesn't require any action). Each stage requires you to complete a specific objective, of which there are eight different types. In overview, these are as follows:

  • Race to the finish: These stages set a time limit and require you to reach the finish line of a course before time runs out. You'll encounter a fork in the course on a couple of occasions - there's no 'wrong' choice here, but the choice will change the order of some of the later stages. Ramps in courses can offer a significant short-cut in some cases, but can be risky if you don't have enough speed built up when you hit them.
  • Collect pods: These stages give the opportunity to collect as many power-up pods as you can within the time limit. They're really more in the way of bonus stages as you can't fail and allow you to upgrade your boat a lot - just don't forget to apply the power-ups!
  • Dispose of mines: Here, you need to collect a number of mines from a starting area (just run over them to do so), then tow them to a marked end zone where they'll blow up. Your task is made more difficult by the enemy boats that appear on the stage and will attempt to 'steal' mines away from you as you tow them. Swerving your boat as you move towards the end zone should allow you to avoid the enemy boats.
  • Reach the finish: These stages have a similar goal to the "Race to the finish" stages, requiring you to reach the finish line before time runs out, but are more in the way of obstacle courses. You'll need to navigate around an opposing current, logs, whirlpools and similar to get to the end of the course.
  • Fry the monster: Essentially, these are boss stages - you need to shoot and defeat the monster before time runs out. Make sure to have your weapons well upgraded by the time that you reach these stages! For the final monster (a shark), you can only damage it from directly in front of it and the monster's hitbox can be a little inconsistent - the rewind feature can be particularly useful in this stage as a result.
  • Shoot the targets: These again can be thought of as a form of bonus stage, with a number of on-shore targets that you are asked to shoot as your boat is dragged downstream. Take the opportunity here to boost your score as much as you can (multiple successive targets being hit will lead to a higher score per target).
  • Guard the people: Here you'll find a number of people swimming in the middle of the area, with a constant assault of enemy boats trying to tow them away. Your task is to destroy these boats before they can get away with all of the swimmers; so long as at least one swimmer is left when the time limit expires you'll succeed. You have the ability to tow the swimmers yourself if you choose, but personally I didn't find this particularly useful.
  • Jump the waterfall: A different form of obstacle course level. Here, you have to jump your boat across a series of waterfalls using ramps that you'll find in the river; a current pulling you towards the waterfall will complicate things. The rewind feature can be particularly helpful here as you try to lne up your jumps!

The exact order of some of the stages varies depending on which fork you take in the "Race to the finish" stages, but will be as below. Over the course of a full playthrough, you'll have to tackle the same courses - it's just the order that changes.

1. Race to the finish
2. Collect pods / Dispose of mines
3. Dispose of mines / Collect pods
4. Reach the finish / Guard the people
5. Fry the monster
6. Shoot the targets
7. Guard the people / Reach the finish
8. Jump the waterfall
9. Race to the finish
10. Fry the monster
11. Shoot the targets / Dispose of mines
12. Dispose of mines / Reach the finish
13. Reach the finish / Dispose of mines
14. Race to the finish
15. Collect pods / Guard the people
16. Guard the people / Collect pods
17. Fry the monster
18. Shoot the targets
19. Race to the finish
20. Dipose of mines / Reach the finish
21. Reach the finish / Dispose of mines
22. Jump the waterfall
23. Fry the monster
24. Fry the monster
25. Ending

Once you complete the final stage, the achievement should unlock.

I've included some advice on the power-up system under the "Pod Person" achievement below, which you may find useful to bear in mind.
