How to unlock the Cruel and Unusual Punishments achievement in Rare Replay - Definitive Guide

From the description it would seem like any Smash Hit would work, however it's either glitched or needs a better description as I have only found one way to make the counter in the Milestones screen go up.

First, you have to knock down a small enemy (throwing him will also work) and have the dizzy effect going on where birds fly over the enemy's head. When this happens, move over him, press down and mash the attack button repeatedly . Your 'Toad should start beating on the enemy if he has any amount of health left, then go to his smash hit attack (or go right to the smash hit attack if the enemy is low enough on health). Zitz will drill the enemy, Rash will claw the enemy's throat out, and Pimple's foot will become a weight that he crushes the enemy with.

This doesn't seem to work with large enemies as the 'Toads will boot them off screen. It's also hard to do it with weak enemies as they typically die in one hit before becoming dizzy.

The fastest way to grind this would be a spot with a few rats in level two (there are a few such areas) where you can easily take them out since there are only a few on the screen here at a time. What you can do is save the game, beat the rats in your area of choice, then reload the save and beat them over and over again.

Jump attacks are an easy way to knock down low health enemies and not do much damage. To execute this attack: cn_B then cn_A while in mid-air.

You can actually save in the middle of doing the attack and load it up. It means you are guaranteed to get it without having to do the attack over and over.

^This!

I made a save as I started the stomp process and could simply reload the save, complete the stomp, and repeat.

playing

I had the tracker open and it would go up 1% each time. Still a bit of a grind but better than playing through normally or fighting multiple enemies.

The achievement seems to be bugged because I've got the milestone with the stamp, but the achievement stucks at 67%. I don't know what happens.

Edit: Ten minutes later, it popped. Weird.

I'm going to elaborate from what iamtfc said as of now only the downward smashes work whether this will be changed who knows.

The fastest way is using level 2 but instead of reloading a group of enemies over and over get the enemy count down to one and make this rat dizzy.

Save the game once you are stood next to the dizzy rat the nearer you are the easier it is. Then keep reloading that save 100 times if you miss the attack use the rewind feature it's a grind but it's the most effective way

This is what I did. Thanks! One thing I thought of afterward: similar to the confirmed rewind usage in Gunfright, could you conceivably rewind after killing the enemy in question and just keep doing the smash over and over again? It might be a little less tedious if it works. As for when to save, I found you can actually save just before you do the smash attack and just do that over and over again.

Rewinding after you kill an enemy doesn't work.
Also the kill counts after the enemy turns into a skeleton so if you save the exact moment the Toads fist hits the enemies face you only have to input the attack once and just keep reloading after the animation.

A lot of the 'do this action x number of times' achievements for Rare Replay can actually be accomplished this way. Seems most games have at least one.

+1 and ShotyMcFat's comment should be added to the solution! Really helpful time saver.

The fastest way is to make a save at the start of level 3 (space ship interior) then jump & strike (B then A) at a rat enemy which will knock him down & make him dizzy (stars spinning round his head), quickly run up to him & repeatedly press the attack button (A).
If done correctly your chosen battle toad will perform his special finishing smash attack : Rash (throat rip) Zitz (drill to the face) & pimple (T ton wieght foot).
Keep doing this on the rat enemies upto the point of reaching the first appearing ladder then reload the save to speed things up.
Using this method i was averaging 15 smash attacks per run every few mins.

Note : the purple rats seem to be too weak to perform smash attacks on.

The fastest way I've found is to save right before the final hit of the smash move and load over and over after the enemy turns to bones.

To do a smash you just need to find a small enemy preferably a rat with more health and nock it over it should have stars above its head, now just walk up to it and press cn_down + cn_A and you should start the smash attack it will ether punch or do the final hit immediately depending on how much health is left in the enemy.
If it punches just keep hitting cn_A until the final move starts.

This achievement is likely to require some grinding for most people. A 'Smash Hit' attack is not one of the attacks that see the 'toads attacking with an enlarged both part (achieved by holding a direction while pressing the attack button); instead, these attacks are where you knock an enemy to the floor, then stand over them and attack to defeat them. Each 'toad has their own animation for this, e.g., drilling the enemy into the ground.

The second stage can be a good place to grind for this achievement if necessary, using the attack against the standard rat enemies. To work towards the required total of 100 Smash Hit attacks, make a save just before using one (this can be once you've knocked down the enemy and are standing over them about to attack, if you're quick), complete the attack, then reload and repeat as necessary until you reach the required total.

Note that you can't use the 'rewind' feature to work towards this.

Smash Hit is a strike that can practically only be performed on rats. We beat the rat mentally (perhaps a jump strike will be useful - , then on the gamepad), he flies off and falls stunned (stars flash above his head) to the ground, we come close to the bastard and repeatedly press the strike button ( ). Each Toad has a different finishing animation: Rush presses the throat, Zitz uses a drill arm, Pimple presses with a weight leg. It must be taken into account that if there is more than one rat in one place, a crushing blow on the ground will not work. So, act on the principle of “divide and conquer”. Also, most baby rats at the first level are very weak and die faster than they are stunned Therefore, the best places to farm are the third (walk through the Black Queen's spaceship) and fifth (Ch.K.'s mansion) stages.
