How to unlock the Distant Points of Light achievement in Rare Replay - Definitive Guide

I was around the 200,000 point mark before finishing the remaining achievements on Jetpac. So my recommendation would save this one for last before grinding this one out.

To grind out the remaining 50,000 points or so that I needed, I continued playing until I was up against the bird/plane enemies that linger on the edges of the screen. Due to their attack pattern they usually spawn close to one another and often kill themselves against the platforms, giving you free points. Once there, I fueled up my rocket (so that bonuses would spawn more frequently) and sat between the left and middle platform while casually gliding up and down and shooting my blaster as enemies spawned (see image). Picking up bonuses also speeds this up.

Enemies range from 50-60 points.
Bonuses are worth 250 points.
Acquiring a fuel canister is worth 100 points.

I was picking up around 6,500 points every minute with this method, so if you fall in a similar range, you can expect to finish this achievement up in roughly 8 minutes. When the achievement unlocked for me, I was at 253,000 so give it an extra minute or so as it may unlock on a slight delay.

Awesome. Thx! Didnt even notice more bonuses falling the fuller the rocket. I also realized how much quicker this has to be in co-op.

It gave it to me at 244,000? lol. Started at 8:05 with 200,000. 8:12 now.

That could be a result of the rewinds causing points to not add properly (if you used them), I certainly did!

I think co-op is a take turns playing sort-of-mechanic; it says on the description of Jetpac, "1-2 Players (1 controller)" so I think it's a pass-and-play style.

Thanks for this, it will go a lot faster than playing normally.

Maybe you can add the points you get for killings enemies and picking stuff up?

It's 60 for an enemy, 250 for a bonus, 100 for picking up fuel. There no points for entering the rocket and/or going to the next level.

You can even idle boost this by picking up fuel and standing beneath the middle green walkway, just to the left of the rocket on the respawn position. Then grab a book or something else to hold down the cn_A button and leave it running overnight. This way you will kill some enemens and occasionally, you will die but immediately grab the 100 points for the fuel when you respawn. It won't be fast but it helps if you hate grinding.

Each enemy is actually only 25 points, but with that level specifically, enemies like to spawn on top of each other, so when they explode, it's usually 2-3 exploding at once, getting you 50-75 points for the group.

I watched initially and thought that they werent giving points on the walkways either....then sometimes it looked as if they did and I also noticed some would just explode in mid-air. I never noticed the fuel thing either. What I do know for a fact ist that with that method(as I looked at my clock at 200k) was that it took seven minutes for 45k with the triangle guys and the writers method.

Nice solution, I done it on the same level but just an afk method. I rubber banded the RT button and the A button so I would be jet packing and shooting automatically and moved myself to just under the platform on the left, by doing this you will NEVER die, took a little bit longer but I hate grinding the same level out:)

Same enemy-style level! However, I just stayed put on the ground at the left of the screen, but just enough away so enemies would not spawn on top of me. I stood still - no shooting - and let the enemies take care of themselves.

rubberband your A button while sat on the middle platform and shooting right. you’ll never die.

You don't even need to rubberband your A button. Just stand on the middle platform, go get a snack, watch some TV or something, and check back to see if you got the achievement after your show is over.

Sky Pony is right. You do not even need to rubberband. Just hop on middle platform and let em die on their own. I've let mine sit for about 15 minutes and they just crash right into the platform. Haven't lost a single life.

Thanks for the suggestion, I added point values to the solution. I noticed I was scoring 55 points per kill on the video, so I went back and advanced to the next level and noticed I was only scoring 50 points on the next one. I'm not certain if the point values change based on the type of enemy or level you are (out of the five for each ship).

Checked the point distribution of the enemies and it is different for each enemy. I did not play against all enmies but here is what I found.

First enemy: looks like a fireball/dead fish: 25 points
Second: reminded me of the Pokémon Tangela: 80 points
Third: balls: 40 points
Fourth: bird/plane enemy: 55 points
Fifth: triangle ufo: 50 points.

In my experience, enemies running into the walkways do not give you points. And are you sure that you get more item drops when the rocket is fully fueled?

Jetpac

Level 4

Literally just fly to the middle platform and stand there. Set it and forget it.

The enemies just kill themselves and will never hit you. Every time an enemy dies you gain points.

You can also use this method for the Eradic-8 achievement

I suggest, before going for this, get out your calculator. Look at your achievement tracker, and figure out how far you have left to go. Let's say you are at 63%, so you have 37% left to do. Multiply 250,000 x .37 (or whatever yours is), and the result is the approximate points you need. Start a new game, get to level 5 (not level 4), and let the points accumulate. This way you know roughly how long it will take, and don't need to keep checking your progress.

You can also just turn on your achievement tracker and watch it fly on up :)

Get to level 4 stand in the middle of the middle platform the enemies will just keep killing themselves giving you a 100 points at a time. Just check your achievements every 5-10 minutes to see if it's popped also works towards Eradic-8

I got this achievement on the level that has the enemies that look like the Millennium Falcon. Filled my rocket then rocketed straight up and down between the first and second platform to kill them since they fly in a descending left to right (with the occasional right to left) pattern. Picked up any bonuses that dropped.

australianguymf posted in the Rising Star Achievement about the cheat for infinite lives, that definitely helped:

Here is the level I used:

Given the emulated nature of the old Spectrum games, and how the achievement tracking works, there is another method of working on this achievement.

The cn_LT (left trigger) works as a Rewind function, reversing anything and everything that was done while you hold it down. Your death can be averted, enemies unkilled, and items ungrabbed.

That last one is the trick for this achievement. Wait for a score item to drop onto the playfield, preferably on a level with easier enemies (such as the planes that hover at the far edges for a few seconds before moving towards you). Land next to it, wait a few seconds (to build up a buffer), then grab the item. It should net you a few hundred points, about 0.1% of the goal needed. Press and hold cn_LT for a short moment, and you will revert back to before you grabbed the item. Although your score drops down in-game, it already tracked you getting the points.

Starting from zero (not recommended, given other achievements you can work on at the same time), and assuming 250 points for an item, it would take a thousand repeats of holding cn_LT, letting go, then moving to collect the item.

In Jetpac you earn points for killing aliens, delivering fuel, and picking up bonus items. 250,000 is a lot of points to earn in this game, and would require many levels to reach. The fastest way to earn the points required is to find a level with enemies that you are comfortable defeating and staying in that level. Pick up as many bonus items as you can to further boost your points, as they are worth much more than just shooting aliens. Unfortunately gathering fuel isn't worth enough points to focus on that, so this will be a long grind of shooting aliens.

Personally I found the level with the ships that hang around the left and right of the screen to be the best level for grinding this. Simply hang around the left side and float up and down to shoot them as they spawn. Remember also that you can use  to hover in place.

There is one "idle" method which involves using a level without the specific "homing spaceship" enemies. If you get this level, you can hover under the left platform facing left and holding the shoot buttons. Enemies cannot kill you from this location and you will kill them over time, as seen in the picture below.

Easily knocked out at Level 4.

Get up on the middle platform and stand there. We don't do anything.
Enemies kill themselves and will never hit you. Every time an enemy dies you gain points.

You can also use this method to achieve Eradic-8 .
