How to unlock the The Beaten Track achievement in Rare Replay - Definitive Guide

I am terrible at this game, but I got the achievement relatively easily.

What you want to do is pick up every bomb pickup you see throughout the races and use them as little as possible because you will need them for races 23 and 24.

To give you an idea, have around 70 at the start of race 23. You MUST have at least 40 for the last race. My car was not fully upgraded for the last race, but I managed to stay in third with the bombs.

My strategy was to always be in third and bomb the guy that passed me every time. Rewind if you don't hit him. This is a very easy way to beat the last race.

I was able to finish the final race with 14 bombs, not knowing to save them for something this difficult. So having 40 is almost overkill and should set you up perfectly to bang this out without a problem.

I didn't use bombs until levels 22,23 and 24 and then I needed them desperately, because even a perfect run was too slow. Regardless, I still had around 80 bombs for level 24. Save after each race and for 22,23 and 24 if you feel you are safe to do so, save during the race. Level 24 I saved after each lap.

Bombs plus rewind to keep the 4th car behind you on levels 19 and 22-24 to finish 3rd is the trick to this one.

Do you mean the bombs that shoot behind you or the missiles that shoot in front of you?

Doable with 10-12 bombs on race 24. Don't sweat having too many

I managed the 24th race with a single rocket. I used rewind on basically every turn to keep myself in 3rd. Tricky but doable.

I made it to race 23, but the cpu just zooms past me. Is it because I literally just upgraded my car with spelling champion? ... I'm gonna have to redo everything aren't I?

Worst controls of any game ever

To confirm what smakzillaa said: DO NOT complete spelling 'champion' on levels 20ish-23. It will reset your car upgrades, and there is never a chance to get ahead of 4th. However, getting 'champio' and then getting 'N' on level 24 is fine (and really recommended). You can also alternate between two save slots for races to repeat a race if you accidentally get 'champion' and can't do the next race.

Level 24 will be the final track required for the achievement.

Personally I didn't focus too much on placement. Sometimes the CPU cars will just go nuts and race off with no hope of catching them. As long as you aren't in last place, you'll progress to the next track... so don't stress over getting first place every time. Any time I took a bad corner or crashed I would just exploit the rewind feature to correct the mistake.

Picking up car upgrades on the track as you lead up to the final race will obviously help with difficulty, but again, I personally didn't focus on any specific element to achieve this.

As TwelveBob has pointed out, snapshot levels do not count towards the achievement. This seems to be the case with all games.

You are correct in that it is 24 races, however how did you beat race 24? It's 9 laps on the longest track with no weapons or powerups. The AI racers take off immediately and you have no chance from lap 1.

In my game, Green never went nuts like Yellow does. I was able to keep Green behind me the entire race even though Red took off and Yellow lapped me.

Completing Snapshot 5 doesn't go towards this unfortunately. This is impossible. No upgrades or powerups. On the snapshot leaderboard for this track I'm currently sitting in the top 10 so I know its not me.

I really had no issue with 24. Exploit the rewind, if you mess up a corner just keep at it until it's perfect. Save often so you don't have to start over. I'll update the main solution with some more info.

24 is an art of rewind :) Deal with it.

The twenty-fourth track is awful. It's not even about the rewind. If you don't have enough weaponry to keep the last car at bay the entire race, you're completely screwed because the AI is significantly faster than you.

The key to 24 is to make sure you have the best car by level 17 so you can max it out before the final level. Once you have a maxed 3rd car it's a piece of cake.

sorry for the stupid question but, how do you upgrade your car?

Each level has a square shaped pickup with an N in the middle. Every time you pick one up it adds a letter to the bottom middle of the screen. Spelling Champion upgrades your car. You can do this twice.

I didn't even know you could use weapons in the game, got to the final stage without using any. Had 90 bombs to use so just kept bombing one of the cars in the final race.

The reason yellow zooms off is to due with weapon usage. If you overuse your weapons yellow will accelerate to max speed for the rest of the track. Once you have all of the upgrades on a stage you can actually make it finish earlier by spamming a few shots.

When I start all three cars zoom ahead of me before I can even get in front of one. I can't bomb them if it isn't physically possible to be in front of them.

I found the easiest way to beat the last race is to manually save after each race, especially the later ones. I'd suggest from Race 14 and on. On the very last race, if you haven't lost out, then you should still have your upgrades and weapons. Make sure to keep at least 1 car behind you at all times using the bomb weapon. I think I needed 14 to win the race. Make sure you use your replays.

Finish all 24 Races in 3rd or better. Tracks 8, 16, and 24 are unique course designs.

Make sure your car is fully powered up before you get to the last race, as you'll need all the boost you can get. The blue car is very quick here. Quick passage through the last turns will really help.

Hint: If you can, avoid using too many weapons - the yellow car will take off and lap you. If you must use weapons to maintain your lead, make sure they're on the mark. Rewind is very helpful here. I still had 75 bombs at when the achievement popped.

(FWIW, I could never finish this track on the NES original.)

I went into the last race with 29 bombs left over, yet when I started it I had no upgrades and all my bombs were gone?

I had the same. I think this is clean race, no water/oil/power ups.
Just boring rewind.

On each course there are flashing letters. If you pick up the letters they spell out "CHAMPION". Every time you do so, your car gets levelled up and all upgrades reset to 0. So if you got the N on the 23rd race, you'll start off with nothing in the 24th.

The game includes 24 different tracks, which you'll race on in turn in the course of your main playthrough of the game (after the 24th race, you'll continue on to a 25th race, but from here on you'll just be repeating tracks that you've already raced on). Completing a race on all 24 tracks will be your first main aim - you'll need to finish in the top three of four in each race to progress to the next, with failure leading to a game over. For this reason, although you do get a couple of continues, I'd recommend making a manual save at the start of each race, which you can reload if you finish last in a race. The rewind functionality can also be useful at a finer level.

Other than not finishing last, your exact placement in each race is unimportant to proceeding through the game (though placing first will help towards the "A White Flag With Black Squares..." achievement - see below). What is more important is the collection of upgrades in each race, as these upgrades persist between races and without them, later races will become much harder - so go out of your way to pick up all performance upgrades (engines/turbo/tyres) and "CHAMPION" letters as you come across them.

Once you complete the 24th race, the achievement should unlock.
