How to unlock the The Beaten Track achievement in Rare Replay - Definitive Guide
What you want to do is pick up every bomb pickup you see throughout the races and use them as little as possible because you will need them for races 23 and 24.
To give you an idea, have around 70 at the start of race 23. You MUST have at least 40 for the last race. My car was not fully upgraded for the last race, but I managed to stay in third with the bombs.
My strategy was to always be in third and bomb the guy that passed me every time. Rewind if you don't hit him. This is a very easy way to beat the last race.
Personally I didn't focus too much on placement. Sometimes the CPU cars will just go nuts and race off with no hope of catching them. As long as you aren't in last place, you'll progress to the next track... so don't stress over getting first place every time. Any time I took a bad corner or crashed I would just exploit the rewind feature to correct the mistake.
Picking up car upgrades on the track as you lead up to the final race will obviously help with difficulty, but again, I personally didn't focus on any specific element to achieve this.
As TwelveBob has pointed out, snapshot levels do not count towards the achievement. This seems to be the case with all games.
Make sure your car is fully powered up before you get to the last race, as you'll need all the boost you can get. The blue car is very quick here. Quick passage through the last turns will really help.
Hint: If you can, avoid using too many weapons - the yellow car will take off and lap you. If you must use weapons to maintain your lead, make sure they're on the mark. Rewind is very helpful here. I still had 75 bombs at when the achievement popped.
(FWIW, I could never finish this track on the NES original.)
Just boring rewind.
The game includes 24 different tracks, which you'll race on in turn in the course of your main playthrough of the game (after the 24th race, you'll continue on to a 25th race, but from here on you'll just be repeating tracks that you've already raced on). Completing a race on all 24 tracks will be your first main aim - you'll need to finish in the top three of four in each race to progress to the next, with failure leading to a game over. For this reason, although you do get a couple of continues, I'd recommend making a manual save at the start of each race, which you can reload if you finish last in a race. The rewind functionality can also be useful at a finer level.
Other than not finishing last, your exact placement in each race is unimportant to proceeding through the game (though placing first will help towards the "A White Flag With Black Squares..." achievement - see below). What is more important is the collection of upgrades in each race, as these upgrades persist between races and without them, later races will become much harder - so go out of your way to pick up all performance upgrades (engines/turbo/tyres) and "CHAMPION" letters as you come across them.
Once you complete the 24th race, the achievement should unlock.
