How to unlock the The Dark Queen's Lament achievement in Rare Replay - Definitive Guide
Slow speed run.
How to warp?
http://www.gamefaqs.com/nes/587125-battletoads/cheats
Remember, you cannot warp if you want to get an achievement in 1 run. Otherwise you need to back and play skipped level. (NEW GAME)
If you accidently did WARP, then instant use REWIND.
About the hardest level 11.
So I tried about 2-3 hours, rewind doesn't work on this level cause chasing ball is bugged and when you do it ball doesnt rewind proper. It can be closer than earlier before rewind.
I found this solution on youtube. (thx Jeremy Mercer)
"SECRET TO BEATING THIS LEVEL!!! I tried beating this level for 4 hours on my emulator and could not do it. I was using an xbox 360 controller and/or the keyboard with ROM save ability. I still couldn't do it. But then I figured out a trick. In order to gain speed on the corners, you MUST execute a frame perfect press on the D pad. For those of you that aren't familiar with the term "frame perfect", there are 60 frames per second. You have to hit the exact 1/60 perfect frame to go faster. VERY hard. But there's a way to make sure you hit that frame every time. It's called PAUSE BUFFERING. As soon as you get to a corner press pause. If you pause at the exact right frame, you'll see the "locomotive" turn 45 degrees and toad will longer be holding onto it. Unpause while holding the button of the new direction toad will be traveling in and you'll get a little speed boost. Do this for every corner and quickly the electric ball wont even be on the screen anymore. The level is easily beaten that way. I used the ROM save ability after every corner in case I didn't hit the pause button perfectly every time. I hope this helps save you from hours of struggling and good luck on your courageous quest to beat the hardest game ever made!"
I did this level on 2nd try with this trick :)
Fast Pause/Start and I was able to run away from the ball and beat the longest straight part of the road.
I boosted almost on every corner.
So good luck. Rest of the levels are possible to do with rewind and inf. lives.
BATTLETOADS:
Badass and brutal. This game separates men from children.
Anyone who can beat it without continue etc. is the god of arcade.
I FINALLY did manage to beat this race after numerous attempts, watching MANY different videos on YouTube. My way to success was essentially timing the falling sequences right to gain that extra time, and if I fell on a ledge then I would simply rewind. I did not head but him at all as that seemed to require too perfect of timing that I just could not do. One BIG thing however that worked in my favor was using the d-pad for sequences in which I was running to run faster, and then switched to the analog stick when navigating the falling sections. It seemed that the analog stick offered me better turns. Hope this helps someone get past this sadistic level.....
For whatever reason, I could not get the pause trick to work properly. I could not get the timing right (or something else) as it would usually seem to slow me down. After trying to do it the normal way with rewind, I found that part of my problem was with using the D-pad itself. Swapping the D-pad and ABXY face buttons lets you have 4 separate buttons for the 4 directions you need to press. After making the change it was far easier to input the directions and I was able to beat it within 10 minutes. Just to be clear, set your controller to the following:

This achievement requires you to complete a full playthrough of the game, completing all 13 stages in turn. Working towards this will likely be your first step in unlocking the game’s achievements.
The levels have quite a range of different formats, though all ultimately are based around a side-scrolling beat-‘em-up/platformer mechanic. A brief overview of the stages is as follows, to give some idea of what to expect from each:
- Ragnarok's Canyon: This is a fairly standard beat-‘em-up stage, with the ‘Toads battling across the surface of a planet and ending with a boss sequence. For the boss, after each barrage a rock will be left behind – you need to pick this up and throw it back, towards the screen, to damage the boss.
- Wookie Hole: In this second stage, the ‘Toads repel down a deep hole, avoiding and attacking a variety of enemies who’ll take any opportunity to stop them. Be especially careful around birds, which are able to break the ‘Toads cables and send them falling to their death.
- Turbo Tunnel: A notoriously challenging stage, here the ‘Toads ride a Speeder Bike while navigating a dangerous obstacle course at high speed.
- Arctic Cavern: This stage, being ice-themed, has slippery surfaces throughout and the low friction from these will make it easy for the ‘Toads to skid into hazards including crazed snowmen, ice cubes and spikes.
- Surf City: Another ‘vehicle’-based stage, here the 'Toads ride surfboards down a river, dodging logs, whirlpools, and mines. Fortunately this stage is somewhat more forgiving than Turbo Tunnel!
- Karnath's Lair: The ‘Toads now use giant snakes to climb the stage, with careful jumping and quick reactions required to jump between snakes as they appear, while avoiding deadly spikes.
- Volkmire's Inferno: With a similar format to Turbo Tunnel, the ‘Toads take to jet planes to navigate an aerial obstacle course.
- Intruder Excluder: The ‘Toads ascend an upward-scrolling elevator shaft, avoiding electrified platforms, suction devices that attempt to draw them into deadly blades and toxic gas - among other hazards.
- Terra Tubes: Set in a network of pipes, this stage includes swimming sections and deadly, rapidly-moving, ‘Krazy-Kogs’ that will chase and attempt to run over the ‘Toads – eventually each can be escaped in a safe area that avoids their path, but you need to be quick!
- Rat Race: As its name suggests, this stage sees the ‘Toads racing a mutant rat down a shaft, to reach and defuse a series of three bombs before the rat can detonate them. Crucial to descending as quickly as possible is minimising how long the ‘Toads spend on platforms, so when falling from each platform aim towards the next gap as far as possible. If the rat threatens to overtake, a well-placed attack should see it overshooting a gap that it’s about to reach, buying time for the ‘Toads to progress.
- Clinger Winger: The game’s final vehicle-based stage, here the ‘Toads ride a unicycle as they attempt to outrun a pursuing ‘Buzzball’. The Buzzball can generally travel more quickly than the ‘Toads, but it slows down on corners – so to stay ahead of it, rapid, ‘clean’ turns are vital. To maintain speed, you’ll need to hold the D-pad / in the direction of movement and try to change this direction exactly at the point of cornering to avoid losing speed. You may find it helpful for this to attempt to pause the game at each corner, change direction and unpause, making use of the rewind feature if you don’t time the pause perfectly.
- The Revolution: Another upward-scrolling stage, here the ‘Toads climb the Dark Queen's tower, having to make use of precarious platforms, some of which are liable to vanish or drop.
- Armageddon: Now all that remains is the final boss, with the ‘Toads facing off against the Dark Queen. Watch out in particular for the tornado attacks that she can launch, but fortunately the range of different attacks available to her is limited. Good luck!
For those who find it useful to have a video to refer to, the following Youtube video demonstrates a (very impressive!) full playthrough of the game:
One important point to note is that while a few stages include warps (appearing as a cross pattern of dots drawing inwards) that allow you to skip two stages ahead, you should avoid using these when working towards this achievement, as the achievement requires that you complete all stages, not just that you complete a full playthrough - and skipping levels will mean that you're not credited with completing them. However, for reference (e.g., in case of a repeat playthrough), the four warp points are as follows:
- Stage 1: This requires speed to reach - take out the first two enemies as quickly as possible and run to the right, where you should (if you're fast enough) see a warp that you can jump to at the top of the screen. If it's not there, you were too slow.
- Stage 3: Near to the beginning of the last part section of the stage, at the bottom of the screen.
- Stage 4: Jump from the suspended platform that appears above a spike-filled gap that you'd normally fall down (this is at the start of snapshot 4).
- Stage 6: In the stage's second section, climb onto the snake and when it turns to descend, run off the top of it to the right, to land on the platform below.
The following Youtube video demonstrates the locations of the warp point:
