Rare Replay

The snapshots provide 'bite-sized' challenge in a pre-defined scenario in the game, accessible via the snapshots section of the Rare Replay interface. You cannot use the rewind feature when attempting these.

There are five snapshots to complete, which are as follows:

1. Boulder Tactics
Dodge the boulders in the crumbling cave and grab at least four pieces of treasure.

This snapshot takes place in the single-screen bonus stage that you'll typically play between each main cavern in a standard playthrough. If you attempt the snapshots after your main playthrough, you're likely to be well-used to this stage - your aim here is to collect at least four of the ten treasure items that are found in the stage. The first four treasures can be collected easily, so long as you avoid being crushed by the first falling boulder - you need to move right, climb over that boulder once it's fallen (collecting the third treasure), then use the boulder as a platform from which to jump to the fourth treasure. This meet's the snapshot's requirement, but you can attempt to collect the remaining treasures for a higher score if you wish.

2. High Scare Challenge
Welcome to scary Cavern 5! Score at least 2,500 points in 60 seconds.

If you've followed my suggestion above for farming defeating enemies, you'll be familiar with this area. To reach the required 2,500 points, move to the right from your starting point to find a pair of skeletons, which you can attack for 200 points apiece. Wait a few seconds and the skeletons should respawn and you can just continue attacking them, then waiting for a further respawn until you reach 2,500 points. You may eventually find that a ghost comes towards you - if so, descend the nearby ladder to avoid it - you'll find another skeleton at the bottom.

3. Rock Solid
Collect all three gems and make it through the level exit within 60 seconds.

This snapshot takes place in cavern one, with three gems available to collect. To find all of these, dig down from the start and descend the first pillar that you come across (opening the cavern's exit). Continue to the right and jump just before the slope to reach the platform above it, where you'll find the first gem. Now dig right then down for the second gem, then return to the slope and this time go down it. At the bottom, dig left to find the third and final gem, taking care around the flying enemies here. Now turn around and go straight to the right, where you'll find the exit.

4. Hit the Roof
Use your shovel to unearth five sets of throwing rocks as quickly as possible.

Hidden in the ceiling in a number of places in this cavern are throwing rocks, which can be used as weapons with which to attack enemies - your task is to find five of these. Fortunately there's no time limit, but this can still be frustrating as there's no indication of where the rocks are located. It's quite convoluted to explain these locations in text, so, with thanks to Tyger7, I've included below a video guide to completing this snapshot. Feel free to use the rocks against enemies, as otherwise they can be quite troublesome.

5. Untouchable
Guide Digger to the level exit without taking any damage!

You being this snapshot standing on the pillar that triggers the exit to open; as a result, you have just over 60 seconds to complete this snapshot (indicated by the counter in the lower-left of the screen), as the exit will close after this time. Your main challenge here will be avoiding the cavemen who roam the cavern and there are a couple of approaches. Either way, you need to start by climbing the ladders to the left of your starting point, then heading right from the top, avoiding (or attacking) the two cavemen as you go.

Now, you can continue by jumping to the left across the lower platforms, then down to the right, using a ladder for the longer fall. Now you just need to continue to the right and you'll find the exit. As you go, there are several more enemies to avoid along this route.

Alternatively, once you've avoided the first two cavemen, drop to the platform below them, move to the left-hand edge here and drop a ladder. From the bottom of this ladder, drop another ladder, descend this and drop a third from the bottom of this. You can now drop to the ground from the bottom of this third ladder and the exit is nearby to the right, over one final caveman.
