Practice is really important in this game. Just keep trying.

Thankfully, there's a check point halfway through the boss fight. For the first part, don't bother with blocking the cannonballs and save your frenzy until the laser part. this race is actually easier than a few of the previous ones. The second part is unlike any other race in the game. Take a few lives to figure it out. Then, try to spread the out the destroyed blocks for the first two ball sections. By the time you reach the last ball section, stick to an island and focus on defending that island. Knock the balls around (heh) and try not to fall into the lava.

If you keep trying, you'll eventually get it.
