How to unlock the Horses for Courses achievement in Red Dead Redemption 2 - Definitive Guide

You must unlock four additional horse stable slots at any stable in order to be able to purchase the additional horses necessary for the achievement - as you start out with a horse that appears to be unkillable.

The four slots will cost a total of $1500 ($100, $150, $500 and $750) and I recommend waiting until you have that sum before purchasing any. It is extremely inconsequential, but the more horses you have, the higher your daily stable fees are, so you can save a tiny bit of money by doing this in bulk. It is possible to purchase slots with gold bars as well, but given the slow rate of earning for those, I wouldn't recommend relying on them.

Once you have the slots, the cheapest way to fill them is with Kentucky Saddlers - $50 each for a total of $200 extra. Once you name the fourth horse and it is stabled, the achievement should pop.

Do you have to purchase the additional horses or can you get them from the wild?

Can you sell the Horses after getting the achievement to avoid the higher daily stable fee, or are those fees just for the empty slots?

How much gold do the stall cost? With the free gold we are getting, I wonder if that will help much.

@fuzzmeister J - $500 stable 20 gold bars and the $750 stable 30 gold bars. Rockstar will only give 15 gold bars, so you will still need to grind some...

The cash alternatives to the gold bars can be amassed much more easily, but if you are happy to spend the gold then the early slots would be the best place to spend it. Each $50 horse costs 2 bars.

@Dr Zoidstein - my experience suggests that the charges are based on the number of horses owned. Haven’t touched the game since I completed it, so others currently playing would be best placed to confirm.

Anyone have any tips on how to make the money required to buy the horses and stables? I'm close to rank 50 but only have $350, which is $1350 short of the amount required. I already spent the gold bars on the recipe for split point rounds, which is required for another achievement.

@EbonHawk01 - you can rack up money quickly by hunting Herons, Spoonbills, Owls and Hawks north of Saint Denis. Skin them and sell carcasses - plumes and bodies are worth a bunch. Easily make more than $100 per hour.

If you’re good at PVP, you can make a bit of cash and it’s a lot more fun.

@EbonHawk01 - Besides the Spoonbill and Herons mentioned (look for pink birds, they’re worth the most I think), don’t forget to pick up your treasure maps from the post office. You get a new treasure map every 5 levels you earn, and those are generating $80-$170 each when I find those chests.

I’m confused, can anyone explain step by step how to get this achievement, rather than discussing how to get money? I have completed the game and have more than enough money for what is stated, above. I have visited 3 different stables and do not see any way to buy more stable slots.

@Massive Attack - go to a stable, choose to buy a new horse and then buy the stable slots below the name of your current horse. Once you have all 5 slots, just buy 4 more horses.

@massive attack please understand this is achievement guide is for online play and not story mode play. You have a long way to go to get to the $1500+ you need to get this achievement. I would suggest you grind out the money by selling carcasses or playing PvP as you arent close to getting this achievement

This a horrible waste of time and money achievement. This and rank 50 and gold's are my last 3 achievements I need, as is the case with most of us on here probably. I wonder if as soon as this achieve pops if we disconnect we keep the cash, I hope so.

@TinyMiracle91 I cam confirm it works to buy the horses and after the achievement unlocks just sell them right away (to reduce stable cost). You can buy horses with 2 gold each as gold can be earned slowly though multiplayer matches. Just some clarification if anyone needs it or if you @TinyMiracle91 wanted to add to your guide

I posted this over on True Trophies since I'm on playstation and can't post a solution on here or I would.
*Edit* - with the May 2019 update, R* claims that more revenue should be generated in general from activities. I also do not know if the stable amounts have changed, as I not only have them all unlocked but don't play this much any more. I nonetheless think this is a solid guide and should be helpful on knocking this thing out. The amounts stated here were as of the February 2019 update.
My general advice on how to go about saving up for this bad boy....
1.) Unless you're willing to put out about $10 cash out of your own wallet, this is going to take a while. Be patient, and do your best to actually enjoy the game. You will definitely get this on your grind to rank 50.
2.) If you have not completed the main story mode, I would advise to do so. The last mission nets you over $200 alone and the other missions will make you some dough also. This is also a decent way to rank up a bit. *Note* there are actually two story missions that you need to have bad honor in order to do (though you don't have to do them in order to get to the $200 mission)
3.) Make certain to seek out the treasure maps that are given every 5 ranks at the post office. They will net you $75-$150 per map, and you level up fairly quickly in the first 20 ranks. There are YouTube videos on many of them if you're struggling finding the chests.
4.) Do not buy unnecessary goods (clothing primarily). NEVER buy a canned good or item to restore your cores when in free roam. Always cook meat you obtain in the wild (I suggest big game + mint, oregano, or thyme to amplify your cores) and then store them for later as even the smallest meat gives much more return than any canned item could. Sometimes I'd buy an apple or carrot or two for my horse, but the wild carrots you can pick give as much core value as these do (and they're free, of course). If you need a quick dead eye core fill for PvP, pick up some cigars.
5.) You probably at some point will buy certain guns to obtain perfect pelts, as well as be decent at PvP, understandably. I recommend picking up the varmint rifle ASAP if you're new as it's necessary as a hunting weapon for smaller animals/some birds and great in PvP as well. After that, I suggest the bolt action (for deer/elk/wolves/alligators etc., decent in PvP), the bow for small game (one of the least expensive weapons too), and possibly the Lancaster repeater (my favorite for PvP) if you just hate the varmint rifle in versus. If you're just hankering for a shotgun, I advise the pump (though picking this up really isn't necessary to fair well online). Personally I would wait for the bow until at least rank 22 when you can buy the small game pamphlet, as it's not the best for PvP and you can get perfect pelts with the guns mentioned above that you could use a regular arrow for. Other than these, I would avoid other gun purchases.
6.) For a while I held onto a ton of meat. Eventually I realized this is pointless, for three reasons: 1) You can sit down at a fire to cook and stow 10 big game meat + a few of another meat and be set for a long time 2) by not selling meat, you're wasting inventory opportunity because once you have a max of 10 of each type, you can't carry any more and as you skin animals you're not being given their respective parts that you should be. 3) some meat (venison, plump bird, and game meat) can go for $.50-$.60 a piece, which can mean $5-$6 per type additionally to the pelts, feathers, carcasses you're selling to the butcher.
7.) upgrading weapons online is EXPENSIVE. I would strongly advise against upgrading anything that you're not going to use specifically for PvP as that's the only time it could really help anyways. Really, I would advise to hold off on any until you get this stupid trophy out of the way, then you can spend your money any way you want.
8.) As for grinding for money... In PvP pretty much any game type will net you a certain amount of cash as well as a few cents towards your gold bars. Races pay out the least in my experience unless you win, which can be tough to do. If I do decent in something like Most Wanted or Pick Your Weapon I usually make around $11 a match. Stranger missions will make you around $15 if you wait until the timer is less than 30 seconds - look for Angus, his missions give the most XP and moneh. If you fish for salmon they make you $2.50 a piece (as of the February 2019 update) and so if you get 10 of those that nets you $25 (good spot at Whinyard Strait by the bridge). If you kill a pristine deer, don't skin it, just sell the whole carcass. Bucks will give even more back than a doe (females). Spoonbill, egret, and heron plumes all make you fairly good money (though can be hard to find). I recommend this Reddit post for various prices on animal products so you know what you're working with: https://www.reddit.com/r/reddeadredemption/comments/a1s8w8/o....
To tag onto this last note, find out what you enjoy best/are good at. This is a fair amount of money to save up for and does take some time, so if you love the PvP, play the heck out of the PvP! If you love hunting, hunt! My advice would be to spice it up and mix between fishing, hunting, stranger missions, and PvP once you finish the story in order to keep things fresh and prevent burnout.

Thank you Nick. I did figure that out after attempting to ride broken horses from the wild into the stable. For anyone else attempting to go for this, and not minding spending a little more money, I would recommend getting the gold belt buckle for purchasing 5 unique horse breeds as well.

After you bought your cheap nags, if you are going to continue, get rid of them right away and save 75¢ a day each from stable fees. Realistically, you'll probably have just one favorite horse. You don't pay anything for an empty stall, so keep them for when you can afford Black Beauty or Secretariat.

@FranconianX - I believe that empty slots do not cost extra. For what it is worth, it is literally only a single dollar extra per horse, but I was so desperate to get the achievements done that saving a few bucks over a matter of days was desirable.

If you have the Ultimate Edition of the game, you can do this with your free bonus horse (ofc you still have to buy the slots). I did this on PS4, so I suppose it works on XONE as well. I wrote a solution on TruTrophies where you can find more details about it. https://www.truetrophies.com/viewcomment.aspx?commentid=3681... (I also credited @TinyMiracle91 for calculating the total cost).

The best way to get the money in my opinion is doing carcass fishing as explained here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ig2moWWLppM
You should be able to get more than $100 per hour using this method (can be up to $70-80 per run if you shoot a few other animals while you are waiting for the fish).
I did it in the location north of Blackwater.

And if you have gold bars, but less than 20, then don't be stupid like me and buy the first two stable slots and horses with money, use the gold bars instead... I was left with 12 gold bars for the last two slots and horses and I was only able to use 4 of them for the final horses, but not the slots, so I still have 8 gold bars and instead of grinding for the last $50 I had to grind for $250.... thankfully it doesn't take that long using the carcass fishing method.

Please be aware that I am writing this February 23rd 2019 and an update is coming on February 26th 2019, where they might patch or nerf the carcass fishing method.

@A WILD SHARK No wild horses can't be saddled in online.

I got the achievement at level 30. I used 3 gold bars to switch my honor and unlock more missions to get more money. I also made money by selling some (dublicate) items to the collector. With the new update it's easier to make money but still you have to conserve. Paying 3 gold bars to unlock 4 more missions is worth it as you get more xp and about 300 $ (3 bars is 75$)

So I'm pretty sure you also need to buy saddles for each horse as well, i had one horse without a saddle and it only popped after i bought him one, the cheapest saddle is 30$. This isnt a full guide, just adding onto the guide above because a lot of people have this issue.

This is my first ever solution for anything. Be gentle, ha.

First, how to do actually do this.
In order to complete this trophy you have to purchase the 4 additional horse stalls at the stables as well as fill them with horses. The purchase amounts for each are $100, $150, $500, and $750 ($1,500 total). The gold bar amounts are 4, 6, 20, and then 30 bars respectively. I personally used gold bars that R* gifted for the 4th and then grinded for the 5th one. Once you have them all open, fill them with Kentucky Sadlers for $50 a piece ($200 total). Don't purchase any in the empty stalls until you have enough money for all of them as it adds to your daily stable fee (small but nonetheless unnecessary).

This is also a decent way to rank up a bit. *Note* there are actually a few story missions that you need to have bad honor in order to do (though you don't have to do them in order to get to the $200 mission)

This trophy will be the one that costs you the most in money, primarily because you have to own five stalls in order to own five horses. The first one is free but the amounts for additional stalls are as follows:

Second stall: $100
Third stall: $150
Fourth stall: $500
Fifth stall: $750

Now you need to buy four additional horses (you start off with one), with the Kentucky Saddler being the cheapest at $50. That's a total of $1,700 required. Alternatively, you can buy these items with Gold Bars but the high real money cost makes this an expensive proposition that we don't recommend.

The best way to earn money aside from just playing competitive matches is hunting animals and selling their remains to the butcher, or finding treasures that appear every time you level up. Keep an eye on the benefits menu as there are occasionally discounts on stables and horses available. If you're doing the collectible method to reach level 50, you should have more than enough money to buy all the stables and horses you need anyway.

To do this, you need to pay for all places in the stable (a total of $1,500 or gold) and buy the cheapest horses

I advise you not to pay attention to GamerTech's comment. It’s definitely not worth buying gold for real for this achievement. While you reach level 50 for the “Notorious” achievement, you can easily make a fortune, because there’s not much to spend money on in the game anyway (if you don’t set yourself the goal of buying all the gear). I was able to buy all the stalls and horses by level 27.

12/06/2018 Rockstar reduced its ardor and lowered prices and increased income. So now it's easier to do it. In total you need to farm at least 1600 RDO$

I recommend leaving the test for later, especially if you knock out lvl 50 using buckles, since the more horses you have in the stalls, the more you pay for rent, respectively, when you farm buckles, and you are 1-2 horses short of the trlfey , then you will simply lose money.
If you just complete tasks for fun, then money should not be a problem.
But, if suddenly you don’t have enough for a stall/horse, and are already tired of completing tasks, then here is an excellent glitch with fish in the video under the spoiler
$25 for 10 pieces + little things you want, total about $50 per visit
On the way to thimbleweed, you can easily shoot 1-2 large animals and 2 small ones. We place the large ones on the croup, and hang the small ones on both sides of the horse.

You can also use gold; for me personally, it was easier to buy places in the stable with it. There is a way to farm it using gold buckle abuse. For example, I, having 3 gold buckles, received 1.20 gold bars in 2 runs, which took +-5 minutes, depending on the loads.
1. Log into the game
2. Go online, load in the world
3. Press the “PS” button
4. Go to settings - network
5. While remaining in this menu, press the “PS” button twice in a row, after which you will return back to the game
6. Go to the menu - progress - rewards - see where you have gold buckles that you can reset and get a reward
7. Quickly reset them by clicking on the square - press the “PS” button twice in a row - click on the cross, thereby turning off the Internet connection - double-click the “PS” button again - Agree with everything that the game writes to you - double-click the button again “PS” - turn on the network - and press the “PS” button again, which will return you to the game, wait until everything is updated and you can enter the open world online. All.
8. Repeat point 7
9. ???
10. Profit
