How to unlock the Skin Deep achievement in Red Dead Redemption 2 - Definitive Guide

Welcome one and all to Skin Deep. I'll get right to the point - if you're here for a straight-up video guide for where to find animals, I suggest using the video linked below, else, continue reading for a full list and tips.

The Video

This video is an invaluable asset when going for this and the Zoologist achievement - the video guide has locations for every animal in the game. In nearly all cases you will find the animal in the exact same place as the video, or if not, in the general vicinity. You can also perform the reload trick to respawn all the wildlife in the area (Save Game > Exit Game > Reload).

How to Skin

To skin an animal you will need to kill it, and then walk up to it and hold cn_Y. This will activate the particularly gruesome cutscene and you will be given a pelt. You can then choose keep or discard the pelt - but it is not needed for completion of this achievement.

NOTE: A number of animals are not needed as they can not be skinned. This is the reason for there being missing numbers in the list.

I would suggest combining this achievement with the following as they go hand in hand:

Red Dead Redemption 2ZoologistThe Zoologist achievement in Red Dead Redemption 2 worth 161 pointsStudy every animal across all states in Story Mode.

Hints & Tips

AUTO AIM
First things first, head in to your settings and set auto-aim to wide and auto aim lock-on to max. This will mean that in some cases even if you can't see the animal, you may be able to lock on to it anyway. In all cases, make sure you turn on dead-eye and mark the animal before shooting.

EAGLE EYE
Click cn_LS and cn_RS together to activate Eagle Eye, allowing you to see animals and their tracks. You are taught how to use this as part of one the first missions in the game and you will need it. A lot.

COVER YOUR STINK
When hunting, ALWAYS use Cover Scent Lotion - it will allow you get closer to animals without them running away. Your character gets very stinky very quickly, so unless you fancy taking a bath every 10-15 minutes this is your best option.

PREDATORS
Panthers, Cougars and Wolves will attack on site, so be prepared. When in an area with these predators, keep one eye on the minimap at all times. As soon as you see a red dot, mash the cn_B button which will cause the animal to be batted away, giving you more time to kill it.

You can try to use Cover Scent Lotion and Predator Bait (for Panthers you need Potent Predator Bait) to lure them to a specific spot, however this only works sporadically in my experience, and on most occasions they will still attack you, ignoring the bait.

SNAKES!
The easiest method of finding a snake is to ride around the area on your horse until a red dot appears on the map - this means that a snake has tried to attack you. Loop back quickly and you should be able to find it in the area where the dot appeared.

IF AT FIRST...
For everything on this list, you can use the 'reload' trick (Save Game > Exit Game > Reload), this will respawn all the wildlife in the area. This is also how you can get 3-star pelts easier, as you can reload the same animal until it is a 3-star.

---

If you think anything needs adding, please let me know in the comments - and if you're having trouble getting a specific animal, please post in the comments and myself and others can try to point you in the right direction :)

Try up in the very North East of the map. There is a little shack called Willard's Rest. To the west of this is a river and waterfall. I found a few up there during the day using the reload trick.

Well done HumptyHumpter. I got it about the same time you did, finally. Still waiting for an owl for the Zooligist.

Moose can be found at Cairn Lake, near Willards rest and I have seen one in Owijinala Dam.

Does this have to be completed during the actual story? Or can to be done once all the missions are completed

By stylecounciller on 16 Dec 2018 11:20
It can be done after the epilogue! None of the animals are missable and some can only be found in New Austin which isn’t available during the story 🙂

Have you compared the list with your in-game compendium? Maybe one you skinned and then reloaded or it didn't track for some reason? If they are all marked as skinned then I don't know I'm afraid - I've not seen any reports of it not tracking properly.

I was having a hard time finding a few I'd already studied. I saw it mentioned on reddit that if you start a replay of a story mission and die and choose not to try again it might help with spawning. I've no reason as to why that would work but in my case it helped with 4 animals show up either straight away where they are shown in the video or at most 1 or 2 reloads.

So you don't actually need birds for this? I just unlocked it after skinning my last animal (Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep) but I still have 8 birds left to go...

This is complete bullshit, all i'm missing is the chinese ring neck pheasant. Well it must be in fucking Asia somewhere because it most certainly isn't in my game. That's what sucks about random spawns. Their random and some games like mine they will never spawn, not to mention by the time you spot it with binoculars because with gunsight they need to be within 20 feet of you, it disappears before gun can be pulled out

Anyone have anyone else have issues finding the Panther? I used the area the video guide recommends but I keep getting the Florida Panther instead. Any tips/suggestions?

By ConfideValkyrie on 01 May 2019 16:34
Yes ConfideValkyrie, for me was very hard find before chapter 5 if I remember well. Was esier after I hunt the legendary panther. Remember that there is two panthers species.

Florida panther spawns on south of Rhodes, I know you have this one. The other panther spawns on north of Saint Denis. In my playthrough, I found the regular panther first, on the exact area marked in red on this map. https://cdn3.gamepur.com/images/red_dead_redemption_2/p....jpg

By netstryker on 02 May 2019 00:28
Yup. I need the 2nd one so I know there is the Florida Panther and Panther, 2 different types I only have the Florida Panther that keeps showing up. I'm in the Epilogue part 2 (after Chapter 6) and I'm trying to find the Panther. Where did you find one at? Was it South of Saint Denin? Where your supposed to find the 2 different types of Panthers shown in the video @netstryker?

By ConfideValkyrie on 02 May 2019 04:01
I answered above, yes. I found the regular panther on north of Saint Denis. Check the link for image that shows the exact area.

Both Panthers can definitely be found in the same place (South of Rhodes as in the video), but the regular Panther is a -lot- rarer than the Florida. It took me a lot of using the reload trick to get it to spawn, as well as Potent Predator bait - just keep at it and it'll spawn eventually :)

By crewdy#4923 on 02 May 2019 07:27
Yes, crewdy4923 is right. In my specific case, I think I had luck. Many regular panthers has spawned on north of Saint Denis in my playthorugh, but unfortunately none florida panther. In south of Rhodes I found both species, but less florida panthers then regular panthers. In proportion 10% florida and 90% regular.

Also rio grande turkey was the death of me. It took a couple hours to find. Ended up loading a save just north of rio del lobo and doing that for an hour or so before finding it. That one was a massive pain.

I have skinned every animal on this list and no achievement.

Edit: My xbox tracker progressed 1% after picking up a Eurasian Tree Sparrow. I then noticed Western Moose had not updated in the compendium, even though i had hunted two, so i hunted another and it popped.

Anyone get a Panther to spawn after completing the game Epilogue 2? I have tried sleeping 72hrs, going south of roads area at night, tried potent predator bait etc. I have yet to even see one Panther and have spent hours doing this.

By OldSchoolBlood on 19 May 2020 19:37
I know this achievement is listed as unmissable, but not sure that is accurate. I think the Panther spawns change after you finish the campaign. I have spent hours trying everything with no success to ever find one. Loaded up a save before the final mission and found both in the swamp area.

By OldSchoolBlood on 20 May 2020 17:13
@OldSchoolBlood I finished this up after the main campaign, including a lot of the harder to find spawns. The only place I could get it to spawn was south of Rhodes in the forest using the reload trick. It always spawned for me, specifically, here: https://pasteboard.co/J9mOI4F.jpg

I would save > exit > reload, walk back to that part of the forest and one of the Panthers would spawn nearly every time. The regular Black Panther is far rarer than the Florida one though so you will see that less.

Edit: a few comments above say it might be more common after hunting the legendary panther as well. I'd already done that by this point though so can't confirm.

This cheevo is not missable. The animals from
doesn't count for this cheevo. Hunt, skin and study just if you plan complete 100% of in game animals catalog, but there is no cheevo related to this. I made 100% just because I wanted to. You can work on this cheevo in your post-game.

The alpine goat is only needed for the Zoologist achi. It's a domesticated farm animal, like the cows, pigs, and sheep - you're not meant to be skinning those you psychopath! I'm even going to reload after killing the cute black bear! LOL.

The guide has 5 years under its belt, with not a single comment of missing animals from the list. I'd confidently say, follow the guide and you'll be okay like the rest of us
Actually, someone commented that '027. Greater Prairie Chicken' was missing, and it was edited in.

I've made a simple Excel spreadsheet using crewdy4923's confirmed list of animals that are required. Hopefully this can help you guys keep track of the animals easier, rather than going into the compendium every time.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VgG8fRRESEdAylPjWR8H-trhhsz...

Download the file off Google Drive, and make changes as you go along. Simply change the "N" to a "Y" once you've skinned/studied the animal. Some animals (mainly birds) only need to be studied, and this is indicated by a "-" in the "Skinned" column.

The % completion at the bottom should correspond with the achievement tracker, save for a few rounding errors, so you'll know you're on the right track.

This will also help with:
Red Dead Redemption 2ZoologistThe Zoologist achievement in Red Dead Redemption 2 worth 161 pointsStudy every animal across all states in Story Mode.

EDIT: Fellas, download the file and access it using your own native spreadsheet app on your computer (or reupload to your own Google Drive if you don't have one and use it from there). I will not respond to any requests to share access to the file because I don't want to risk it getting messed up for everyone else.

EAGLE VISION
Click L3 and R3 together to activate Eagle Vision, allowing you to see animals and their tracks.

As soon as you see a red dot, mash the O button which will cause the animal to be batted away, giving you more time to kill it.

You can try to use Cover Scent Lotion and Predator Bait (for Panthers you need Potent Predator Bait) to lure them to a specific spot, however this only works sporadically in my experience, and on most occasions they will still attack you, ignoring the bait.

SNAKES!
The easiest method of finding a snake is to ride around the are on your horse until a red dot appears on the map - this means that a snake has tried to attack you.

For the big cat at braithwaite manor I found that predator bait works very good. There is a rock near the road there, you put the bait at the sage plants between the trees and you can wait at the top of the rocks. From there you can easily and safely study, track and shoot the animal, it can not touch you on the top of the rock. I used this place for Master Hunter challange too where you had to bait two animals at once.

There are 178 animals in the game. Of these, 154 can be studied, 71 can be skinned (button ).

You can track them in the menu pause-progress-reference-animals.

The trophy does not require legendary animals, nor animals from the island in Chapter 5.

Video guide to finding western moose.
I searched for him for 5 days until I came across this video. Basically, you just spawn it yourself.

Animals from Chapter 5 (Island) are not needed for the trophy.
Only those animals that have the item “Skinned” in the directory are counted. For example, almost all birds are not needed for a trophy.

When I sat down to knock out these trophies, flipping through the tab of animals and writing down all the necessary ones on a piece of paper, I began to look for them and was very surprised when the achievement fell to me before I finished the list of animals that I compiled based on those already skinned and studied... well, from this I I can conclude that achievements are tied to a certain number of animals, the list of which does not include legendary ones. Well, what is the actual advice, if anyone is reading this before getting to the chapter with the island, I advise you to study the local fauna and when it’s the turn of these two achievements.. you will have to worry less about looking for the missing animal! Another thing I would like to say is, don’t bother with birds like Coastal Owls or something like that, you came to the point, stood there all night, didn’t see it... go after another bird or another animal, along the way you’ll meet the one you’ve been looking for for so long and You won’t waste time, because in the video that was posted above, the habitats shown are not the only ones where this or that animal is found.

I received the achievement and want to share a couple of tips on the problems that I encountered.
There were 3 types of animals that I had trouble finding.
Common pheasant
On foreign forums they wrote that they appear from 8 to 9 am. I don’t know how true this is, but they appeared for me during this period. (I met him a couple more times during this period of time). It may be a coincidence, or it may not.
I ran this route:

I did this: I slept in Bitcher Hope until the morning and began to wind in circles, as in the picture they eventually appeared in the forest (circled). The Chinese were also on the same route, but a little lower to the road. You need to move slowly, I rode the horse at a normal pace.
Riogrande wild turkey
Video guide . They have a timing when they appear. I met them earlier at a railway crossing because I was attacked by a puma on the way.
Plains Wolf
Video guide .
But don’t focus on one point, but take the entire road and surrounding area.

I have circled the main places, but practice shows that they can appear throughout the entire area.
